Chapter 64: Brother, Are You Willing to Treat Me Like This?
Pei Xiqing flinched.
When she raised her eyes to look at the man, her body trembled. Her motor functions seemed to fail, and she walked toward him completely uncontrollably.
Her voice was shaky. “…I slept for so long, why didn’t you wake me up?”
“It’s just a side effect of the medication,” the man said smoothly. “Getting more sleep will help your recovery.”
“Is this the medicine that Dr. Zhan Da injected me with when I was injured?”
“Mm.”
Pei Xiqing rubbed her aching forehead.
No wonder she had slept for a whole day and night, trapped in those endless nightmares, always feeling like she couldn’t break free. She could no longer recall most of the details from her dreams, but she still remembered dreaming about a tragic, bloody ending.
She let out a soft sigh and looked down at her arm. The lacerations had almost fully healed, and the green zombie spots had faded significantly. It seemed that a long rest, combined with how her body processed the medicine, really did help with recovery.
But she was deeply curious about the medicine Doctor Zhan Da had used. Why was it so effective on her, a zombie?
There were clearly many talented people inside this base. The doctor had even mentioned needing to ask his master for advice regarding her unique condition. She wondered who that master actually was.
Her mind began to drift again. When a sharp, repeating electronic chime finally snapped her back to reality, she realized someone was calling Duan Xiaolin’s communicator.
The device rang over and over, but he ignored it completely. Pei Xiqing didn’t say a word either. He had his reasons for not answering.
His entire focus remained fixed on the chain in his hand.
The object looked a lot like the ones used in the water prison and the cages lining the commercial boulevard, but looking closely, there were a few differences. It was brand new and lacked those sharp, rusty hooks. Compared to what she had seen before, it wasn’t exactly gentle, but it was slightly less terrifying.
Pei Xiqing bit her lip, her nerves wound tight. After a moment of hesitation, she asked, “Brother Duan, why did you bring this…”
The man raised his eyes. “I found a new one specially.”
“And then?”
“Do you like it?”
Pei Xiqing thought she had misheard. Her jaw dropped slightly. “What?”
He stared at her, approaching step by step in absolute silence. The heavy chain scraped against the concrete with a dull ring. She was forced backward until her heels hit the wall, leaving her with no escape.
“What are you going to do?” Pei Xiqing whispered, her tongue practically tied.
The man lowered his eyes, his voice steady. “Do you like it?”
Pei Xiqing blurted out, “I don’t like it.”
He paused, looking thoughtful. “I thought you would.”
“If you don’t like it, then we won’t use it.” Duan Xiaolin tossed the heavy metal onto the ground.
Pei Xiqing was just about to let out a sigh of relief when he smoothly changed the subject. “So, what kind do you like? I have a few more. Why don’t I bring them all over for you to choose from? Once you’ve made your choice, we can get started.”
Pei Xiqing’s eyelids fluttered in pure panic. “Brother Duan, stop joking with me.”
He let out a low chuckle. “I’m not joking.”
Pei Xiqing’s face froze.
Her lips moved, but before she could forge a sentence, a heavy knocking echoed from the villa’s outer security gate. Unfamiliar voices filtered into the yard, and pricking up her ears, she could pick out a few key words through the static.
“Save his life…” “Let him go…” “Death penalty…”
Several people were outside, desperately begging for mercy on behalf of the base officers who had been arrested. There were women crying and children wailing, their voices muffled but frantic.
The man they were begging stood calmly in the dark yard. He slowly selected different models of chains from a crate, carefully wiping each one down with a clean handkerchief.
“Sir! Please spare my husband! He was just possessed for a moment, he definitely didn’t mean to plot against you!”
“My husband was completely deceived! He has always been loyal to you!”
“Sir, please release him!”
A faint, cold voice cut through their cries from the outer gate—it was one of Franlun’s guards answering them.
“They violated dozens of base rules. Countless lives were lost because of them, and they actively participated in the illegal black-market auction. Any single offense carries a mandatory death penalty.”
“The Chief Judge has already shown immense mercy by sparing their lives.”
“They have been released from custody. You can go find them yourselves.”
The frantic crowd outside seemed to take this as wonderful news, running off excitedly into the night.
But Pei Xiqing understood the underlying meaning perfectly. She raised her head, casting a cautious glance at Duan Xiaolin. This man remained entirely indifferent from start to finish, and no one truly knew how he had dealt with those corrupt officers. They were undoubtedly the same men she had heard plotting outside the window before she passed out.
The crying faded away, and the yard fell into an absolute, suffocating silence once more.
Although her wounds healed faster than a normal human’s, the deep cuts from yesterday still throbbed with a dull ache. She listened to the shallow sound of her own breathing, wishing she could melt into the air to hide. But hiding was only a temporary fix.
The wind picked up, rustling her clothes and hair as the night grew deeper and colder.
The man approached her slowly. “Do you want to choose, or should I choose for you?”
Pei Xiqing stood on her tiptoes, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. She leaned into him, using her most persuasive, coquettish tone. “I don’t want to choose. Do I really have to? I’m scared…”
Duan Xiaolin firmly gripped her hips, lifting her off her feet and holding her securely against his chest. “Yes.”
“Why… I’m being obedient. I don’t want to deal with those things.”
“Are you truly obedient?”
Pei Xiqing nodded vigorously against his shoulder. “Completely obedient.”
Duan Xiaolin carried her over to a massive storage chest at the edge of the yard. Holding her securely with one arm, he used his free hand to flip open the lid, sorting through the contents.
With just a single glance inside, Pei Xiqing’s face turned pale, and she tightly shut her eyes.
The chest was packed with a dizzying array of restraints—different weights, styles, and lengths, spanning every configuration imaginable. Realizing there was no running away from this, she forced her eyes open as his hand moved over the metal. She quickly reached out and tapped the thinnest, shortest chain in the box. It felt smooth and cool to the touch.
She said embarrassedly, “This one. Put the rest away, they’re terrifying.”
Duan Xiaolin snapped the heavy lid shut. “I prepared this one specifically for you. You can take your time using it in the future.”
Pei Xiqing quickly slapped a hand over his mouth. Her face burned hot, and a deep blush spread all the way to her ears. “What kind of ridiculous nonsense are you broadcasting?”
Duan Xiaolin pulled her hand away slightly, his voice a low purr. “Don’t worry. It won’t hurt at all.”
Her head throbbed just trying to process what he meant, but beneath the embarrassment, a strange, unverified expectation flared deep within her heart.
Pei Xiqing pouted, looking at him with a mix of defiance and shyness. “Brother, are you really willing to treat me like this?”
“You were willing to say those provocative words to me first, weren’t you?” he murmured.
