Chapter 25: Urgent Request
Xu Youyou immediately took a step back.
Her evasive attitude made Assistant Liu’s face show a hint of hurt.
“What do you need help with? Tell me first,” Xu Youyou said.
“Tonight, our Mr. Lu must attend a banquet, and he needs a female companion.”
Hearing this, Xu Youyou frowned. She didn’t have any negative feelings toward Lu Jingyao. The man had a winning hand from the start—good family background, handsome appearance, and a successful career at a young age.
But she found it odd. In her previous life, she had never heard of Lu Jingyao. At the auction earlier, Gu Xueying could barely tear her eyes away from him.
Given her position in the Lu family in her past life, it made sense that the Gu family wouldn’t let her interact with Lu Jingyao—but it was strange that she had never even heard of him.
She recalled that Gu Xueying’s husband in her previous life also had the surname Lu. He was said to be from a branch of the Lu family but was adopted into the main family to inherit their vast wealth after the heir’s untimely death.
A suspicion crept into Xu Youyou’s mind—was Lu Jingyao the unlucky man destined to die young?
The more she thought about it, the more she wanted to avoid him. If something happened to him in America, she didn’t want to get caught in the mess.
“Assistant Liu, if he doesn’t have a female companion, just go without one. I doubt anyone would dare criticize Mr. Lu for it,” Xu Youyou said with a smile.
Assistant Liu stared at her in disbelief. With his boss’s face, he found it hard to imagine any woman turning him down.
“Miss Xu, we truly have no other choice. If Mr. Lu attends without a female companion tonight, it will cause major problems,” Assistant Liu said, his face filled with anxiety.
Xu Youyou shook her head with a laugh. “Why don’t you try finding a female student from a nearby university?”
Assistant Liu sighed. “I already tried. They thought I was joking and even mocked me, saying that not even CEOs in romance novels pull this kind of stunt anymore!”
Xu Youyou chuckled to herself, amused by the sharp-tongued students.
“Why doesn’t Mr. Lu just fake an illness and skip the banquet?” she suggested.
Assistant Liu shook his head. “The host has invited him several times, and Mr. Lu already agreed to attend. There are also some business negotiations that need to be finalized at the banquet.”
Xu Youyou raised an eyebrow. “What kind of business can’t be discussed in a meeting room and has to be handled at a banquet?”
“Trade secret,” Assistant Liu muttered awkwardly.
“If it’s a trade secret, then you definitely shouldn’t bring me along,” Xu Youyou said, amused.
Assistant Liu looked even more troubled. Seeing that Xu Youyou wasn’t giving in, he lowered his voice and said, “The host’s daughter is deeply infatuated with Mr. Lu. He’s tried to avoid her, but she won’t leave him alone. And until the deal is sealed, we can’t afford to offend her…”
Xu Youyou immediately understood. But she and Lu Jingyao weren’t close, and she had no intention of putting herself in a tricky situation.
[Accept his request.]
The system’s sudden message made Xu Youyou’s eyes narrow.
“Is there a hidden treasure at this banquet?” she asked in her mind.
The system confirmed it, adding that the banquet was of such high status that ordinary people couldn’t get in.
With Assistant Liu still pleading, Xu Youyou decided to stop resisting. “I didn’t bring an evening gown, and there’s no time to find a professional makeup team.”
Assistant Liu’s face lit up with joy, his professional skills kicking in. “Don’t worry, Miss Xu. We’ve already prepared everything—you’re the missing piece.”
Soon, Xu Youyou was whisked away to a luxury private studio next to the hotel, where a Chinese makeup artist was waiting.
Midway through the makeover, several high-end brands delivered gowns. Xu Youyou casually chose a wine-red dress with delicate straps.
With her voluminous, tousled hair styled to perfection, she looked stunning—like she could walk the red carpet at any moment.
Assistant Liu, holding a jewelry box, gasped when she emerged. “You… you look breathtaking…”
“Let’s go,” Xu Youyou said.
Assistant Liu opened the box, revealing a dazzling blue gemstone necklace under the shimmering lights.
The sapphire centerpiece was enormous, radiating an undeniable brilliance.
With the stylist’s help, Xu Youyou put on the necklace and immediately felt its weight pulling at her neck.
“This thing is heavy,” she remarked.
Assistant Liu rubbed his nose awkwardly. “Mr. Lu said you must wear it tonight—it’s his thank-you gift for helping us.”
Hearing that, Xu Youyou’s energy returned. A necklace of this caliber could easily be worth tens of millions.
She recalled that in her past life, Gu Xueying owned a similar piece—so valuable it was kept in a safe and only worn for major events.
“Mr. Lu is too generous. I’m not helping for the necklace—I’m just naturally kind-hearted!” Xu Youyou beamed.
Assistant Liu’s mouth twitched. If her wide grin weren’t so obvious, he might’ve believed her.
Xu Youyou even wondered if the necklace was the hidden treasure, but the system hadn’t sent any confirmation yet.
In the car, Lu Jingyao sat with his eyes closed until the driver gasped softly.
“Miss Xu…”
Hearing the driver’s surprise, Lu Jingyao opened his eyes and looked outside.
Amid the bustling crowd, Xu Youyou shone like a radiant moon, effortlessly capturing everyone’s attention.
A sudden displeasure rose in Lu Jingyao’s heart—like his treasure was being coveted by others. But he quickly shook it off. They had no connection, so he had no right to feel possessive.
Watching Xu Youyou’s hand frequently brush against the sapphire necklace, a hint of disappointment flickered in his gaze.
Jewels adorned a beauty, but he preferred a beauty who treated them as nothing special.
Her subtle, possessive gestures seemed to diminish the ethereal charm she otherwise exuded.
Assistant Liu, acting like a palace eunuch fussing over a favored concubine, eagerly held the door open and helped Xu Youyou into the car.
Once inside, Xu Youyou considered greeting Lu Jingyao, but his chilly demeanor—sitting as far away from her as possible—dissuaded her.
Sensing the tension, Assistant Liu urged the driver, “Let’s go.”
Very fun! Looking forward to the next update🥺💕
