Chapter 392: Ye Jiamei the Gossip
She hadn’t intended to escalate things further—Yu Luo had actually held back with that arrow, deliberately avoiding Yu Qiuyun’s heart. She simply wanted Yu Qiuyun to learn a lesson, to think twice before ever laying a hand on her family again.
If there was a next time, Yu Luo wouldn’t hesitate to kill her.
Ye Jiamei was still in shock when Yu Luo’s gentle voice reached her ears. Before she could even react, her body had already lifted off the ground, soaring into the air.
Once out of the estate, mother and daughter quickly boarded a carriage.
It wasn’t until Ye Jiamei caught sight of the familiar figure inside the carriage that she fully processed what was happening—not only had she successfully escaped, but the person accompanying her daughter to the capital was none other than Chi Jinchen?!
Chi Jinchen, the handsome and mysterious man who had casually bought twenty shops in Luocheng with a wave of his hand!
The moment Ye Jiamei saw Chi Jinchen, her expression was priceless.
She instantly forgot the dangers she had just faced in the estate, her mind entirely consumed by a far more urgent matter—the relationship between her daughter and Chi Jinchen. Her eyes burned with excitement, much like a mother-in-law sizing up a prospective son-in-law!
“Is Madam Yu well?”
Inside the carriage, Chi Jinchen couldn’t perform the proper junior’s courtesy, so he merely smiled and gave a polite nod, slightly cupping his fists.
However, Ye Jiamei didn’t respond at all.
When Yu Luo turned to look at her mother, she was stunned to find that the woman’s expression was positively glowing with delight—as if she were looking at her future son-in-law! The sheer joy in her eyes was impossible to miss!
Yu Luo was mortified.
Hurriedly, she nudged her mother with her elbow, frantically signaling her to pull herself together.
Only then did Ye Jiamei snap out of it.
“Oh my, what a surprise! I didn’t expect Young Master Chi to accompany our Xiao Luo to the capital! My apologies, my apologies—I was just so shocked that I lost my manners. I must have made a fool of myself.”
“No need to be so formal, Madam Yu. You seem well. We are leaving the city now, and as expected, we are being followed. We will switch carriages several times along the way, so please don’t be alarmed.”
“Oh, I’m not worried at all! I just didn’t expect Young Master Chi to go to such lengths for me, traveling with our Xiao Luo all this way. You’ve truly worked hard. Once we return to Luocheng, I must find a proper way to thank you.”
“Mother, let’s not waste time on pleasantries. Tell me—what exactly happened? Why was Yu Qiuyun so reluctant to let you go?”
Yu Luo, impatient with their polite exchange, cut in to get to the point.
“Ugh, don’t even get me started. That Yu Qiuyun has always had her nose in the air, ever since she was in the Marquis’s estate. She never thought much of us. Your uncle, on the other hand, actually tried to arrange for some guards to escort me out, but she refused and fed me some hypocritical nonsense. I couldn’t stand her two-faced act, so I called her out on it. She lost her temper, and well…”
Hearing this, Yu Luo finally relaxed a little.
“Mother, you need to control your temper. You were in her territory—if she had truly ordered her people to attack you, no matter how skilled you are, you’d still be outnumbered. I thought she was planning to silence you for good.
But I gave her an arrow to remember me by. Given her current status, I’m sure she now holds a deep grudge against me. She’ll probably stir up trouble again later. Next time, if something like this happens, don’t show them any mercy. You have plenty of ways to protect yourself—just take them down on the spot and get out of there. Don’t let yourself be kidnapped again.”
Yu Luo could already guess why Ye Jiamei had initially been unable to escape, but at this point, it was clear—there was no use hoping for anything from Yu Qiuyun.
“I understand. This was a one-time thing. I only thought that maybe…”
Mid-sentence, Ye Jiamei suddenly realized Chi Jinchen was still sitting there. She promptly shut her mouth.
Before they could leave the city, Chi Jinchen had them switch to another carriage in a secluded alley.
With Chi Jinchen’s presence, their exit from the city went smoothly. However, they hadn’t gone far when their carriage was stopped once again.
“Cousin, I went to find you, only to learn you had already left. I rushed out to catch up—were you really going to leave without saying goodbye?”
The voice was instantly recognizable—it was Third Prince.
Ye Jiamei’s brows furrowed. She, too, found his voice strangely familiar.
Chi Jinchen lifted the curtain slightly, allowing Yu Luo to see the prince sitting atop his horse.
Silently, she squeezed her mother’s hand and shot her a look. Ye Jiamei, no fool, quickly suppressed her curiosity and wisely kept quiet.
“I had urgent business to attend to. If you need anything, Third Prince, you may send a letter.”
“Forget it. In that case, I won’t keep you. There are many matters to attend to in the palace. I’ll bid you farewell here, Cousin.”
Chi Jinchen was never one for unnecessary words. After a simple exchange, the carriage continued on.
Yu Luo, however, could feel Chi Jinchen’s gaze lingering on her, making her oddly uneasy.
“Why didn’t you bid the Third Prince farewell? I thought you two knew each other?”
“Less is more. He doesn’t need to know how well I know you.”
Chi Jinchen nodded slightly, his deep eyes revealing a meaning Yu Luo couldn’t quite decipher.
“What’s going on?”
Now that even Chi Jinchen was questioning things, Ye Jiamei could no longer contain her curiosity. She leaned in and whispered, “What’s the story here?”
“Nothing. We’ll talk about it later.”
Later? It would take at least ten days to return! Ye Jiamei silently grumbled to herself.
Meanwhile, back at Yu Zhengqing’s estate, Yu Qiuyun was furious.
Although Yu Luo’s arrow hadn’t been fatal, it had thoroughly humiliated Yu Qiuyun.
Despite Yu Zhengqing’s attempts to calm her down, once he left, Yu Qiuyun immediately sent out assassins to hunt down Yu Luo and her mother.
As expected, less than an hour after leaving the city, waves of assassins began attacking them. Fortunately, Chi Jinchen had arranged for ample protection. Otherwise, Yu Luo and Ye Jiamei would have had a much harder time making it back to the frontier.
After fending off yet another group of assassins, Ye Jiamei could no longer suppress her anger.
“At this rate, they’ll keep coming all the way to the frontier! If they follow us to Luo City, we’ll have a real mess on our hands.”
“Mother, once we reach Luo City, we won’t have to worry. As for shooting Yu Qiuyun, I wasn’t just venting—I wanted her to understand where we stand.
Don’t worry. I knew what I was doing when I made my move. We’ve already cut ties with them, and I have no intention of looking back.”
“Madam Yu, please rest assured,” Chi Jinchen reassured her calmly. “I have hundreds of men protecting us. A few assassins won’t pose a threat to us.”
