Chapter 22: Congratulations, Host!
“Not so fast—we still have to go a bit lower. The system just prompted me to go down and complete a mission.”
“What?! In this pitch-dark place, you can’t see a thing down there. What dangers lie below? Are you sure your system isn’t just trying to screw you over? You’re lucky that when you fell, a tree caught you; going down fifty meters isn’t a joke.”
It was clear that Yu Haojie was extremely reluctant to let Yu Luo take the risk, his tone dripping with discontent.
“Father, the system says there’s fire oil available. I’ll immediately make a torch so we can have some light.”
“That’s still dangerous—the slope is far too steep.”
“I’ve bought plenty of hemp ropes in my system space. I’ll tie one end of the rope to a big tree and secure the other end around my waist. That way, there’ll be no danger. Once I finish the mission, I can just climb back up using the rope.”
Hearing Yu Luo’s plan—and as she spoke, she already conjured a piece of firewood out of thin air, wrapped it in ragged cloth, and drenched it with fire oil—there was nothing more Wu Dahai could say.
“Then I’ll go down with you. You grab another rope, too.”
At once, Yu Luo immediately produced two ropes. She made her torch while Wu Dahai set up a safety rig on the big tree.
Once everything was prepared, Yu Haojie shouted up to reassure Ye Jiamai, so she wouldn’t worry. “Jiamai, wait up there and keep safe.”
Before long, a voice from above came from Ye Jiamai. The father and daughter, now having fastened the rope around themselves, headed directly down the mountain.
“Father, when I was little, you used to take me rock climbing. That wasn’t for nothing—you see, with this rope, I can have so much fun!”
Seeing Yu Luo retreating by a meter or two in this pitch-dark place yet speaking in a tone that was almost playful, Yu Haojie could hardly bear to watch.
“I was worried you’d have no strength left after a day’s journey. It seems a monkey truly is a monkey—when you were little you were a cheeky little monkey, and even after transmigration, you’re still one! Be careful, though; don’t let anything unseen scratch you. You’re so fair and tender-faced—if you keep it up, you might even help me find a wealthy son-in-law someday!”
Up above, Ye Jiamai were anxiously waiting, while below, the father-daughter pair bantered and laughed together.
As Yu Luo was happily lowering the rope, the system’s voice rang in her mind.
[Ding dong, System Prompt: Distance to the destination: 20 meters, 18 meters… 10 meters, 9 meters. Friendly reminder: A pack of wild boars is approaching below. Host, please take defensive measures.]
“Wait a minute!”
She quickly reached out and grabbed Wu Dahai, who was busy handling the torch and rope.
“What’s wrong? Is your crappy system prompting you again?”
“Yes, Father, you know me well. I didn’t expect my system to know me so thoroughly. It just said that there’s a pack of wild boars down below. I’ll give you my crossbow first, and we’ll act when the time comes.”
“Wild boars?! Excellent! Doesn’t your system have a preservation function? Later, after we hunt them, you can store them in the system. When we get to the wild lands, we can take them out to feast—and we won’t worry about a meat shortage.”
“That sounds like a good idea. Although I bought several pigs already, we can never have too many, right? If, in the end, we never return, a whole bunch of wild boar meat could feed us for decades.”
“Bah, you can’t say anything nice! Do you really want to spend your life in the wild lands? Since we transmigrated into this ancient, magnificent land, shouldn’t the three of us go out and see it for ourselves?”
The father and daughter laughed and joked, completely free of any anxiety about their exile; they were now fully in “transmigration game mode”—stockpiling supplies, leveling up, and occasionally joking around with each other, their spirits remarkably high.
Following the system’s prompt, the father-daughter duo prepared in advance. They armed themselves with crossbows and stopped at a spot about 7 or 8 meters away from the approaching wild boars.
But before they could attack, the wild boar pack had already spotted them—the pack, in its small valley below, could charge at them at full speed!
Thanks to the advantageous terrain, when several furious wild boars charged toward the pair, their crossbows sprang into action with a rapid “whoosh, whoosh, whoosh,” firing countless short arrows.
These wild boars, not known for their intelligence, simply charged wildly. Even when they saw their comrades fall, they only reacted with more fury, not understanding the need to flee.
Compared to the wolves they had faced before, it was much easier for the father and daughter to massacre these boars!
In less than the time it takes to brew a cup of tea, all the wild boars were shot dead. The pair then, in the small valley, began to collect the wild boar carcasses without pause.
“Seven, eight, nine… sixteen, seventeen, eighteen!” Yu Luo counted while gathering, and Wu Dahai, holding his torch by her side, counted along. As they tallied the boars, Wu Dahai’s lips curled into an ever-widening smile!
Even now, it all felt like a dream to him—this family didn’t seem to be transmigrated survivors at all; they felt as if they had entered a level-up game.
“Hey! What’s this? Father, bring the torch closer.” Yu Luo waved her small hand, and the wild boar carcasses vanished into thin air. But then, under the faint glow of the fire, a burst of colorful light began to appear where the boar carcasses had just lain.
Yu Luo frowned, then squatted down and shouted toward Yu Haojie. Yu Haojie’s expression turned serious as he hurriedly brought the torch closer. “This… what looks like scales is emitting light? Could this be some kind of treasure?”
Yu Luo’s lips twitched as a previous system prompt suddenly flashed in her mind!
With that thought, she reached out and jabbed directly at the cluster of colorful, glowing “scales.”
“Yip, yip, yip…”
As soon as her hand touched the cluster, a sound like a small dog’s whimpering erupted in their ears, and the clumped scales suddenly quivered, frightening Yu Luo into retreating half a step.
“System, is this what you called the Armor-Clad Beast?”
[Ding dong, Congratulations, host! An Armor-Clad Beast hatchling has been discovered!]
Yu Luo, “!!!”
She had thought that the so-called “Armor-Clad Beast” would resemble a pangolin, but this little creature turned out to be incredibly adorable. A tiny, compact bundle, much like a kitten, it appeared quite frightened, curling up and shivering, while emitting soft sounds that made Yu Luo immediately fall in love!
“Father, this is the mission the system assigned me—the system told me to go down here and find it.”
With that, Yu Luo reached into her system and produced a cloth bag. She extended her hand, grasped the little, curled-up bundle, and placed it gently into the bag.
“What is this? Why does it look so strange? Are the animals in this world different from those in our previous life?”
“Perhaps so. The system says it’s called an Armor-Clad Beast, capable of breaking through stone just like a pangolin can tunnel. Never mind that for now—Father, hang this bag around your neck. I’ll collect the wild boars, and then we must go back up. Otherwise, Commander Wu and the guards will think we’ve escaped!”
