Chapter 184: Could There Be a Conspiracy?
The man’s voice, along with his probing gaze, startled the couple so much that they jumped from their seats.
“What… what’s going on?”
Ye Jiamei pointed at the man, who remained composed and sat calmly in place. She furrowed her brows, glanced at Tao Ming, then at the man again, and couldn’t help but raise her voice to ask.
“I don’t know either, Madam. Perhaps this is what Miss meant when she said, ‘his mind isn’t right’?”
Ye Jiamei was speechless.
“You are my wife’s parents? Then that makes you my father-in-law and mother-in-law.”
Yu Haojie’s mouth twitched, and he quickly pulled Ye Jiamei outside.
“It seems like he really is a fool. And you were thinking of making him our son-in-law? I think you should forget about it. Not to mention his unclear identity, what if his mental condition is hereditary and he passes it on to our grandchildren?”
“Ugh, stop that nonsense! His eyes are clear, and his demeanor is normal. He doesn’t seem like a fool. Perhaps it’s just amnesia from his injuries, or maybe he’s experiencing memory confusion.”
“Memory confusion? That’s even possible?”
Yu Haojie’s brows furrowed even tighter. Initially, he had thought this young man looked decent—handsome and well-mannered. His aura was dignified, and if his character turned out to be good, he might have been a suitable match for their daughter. After all, in this barren land, it wasn’t easy to find someone like him. But now, he was deeply suspicious.
“I’m not sure either. Neurology isn’t my specialty, but I do have some medical books in the hospital. I’ll go through them when I have time.”
“Alright then. Our daughter is still young; it’s not like she must get married right away. Yesterday, we just joked about it because the young man looked like an ideal son-in-law. But let’s not overthink it for now.”
For once, Ye Jiamei agreed with Yu Haojie.
When they returned inside and sat at the round table, the young man had already finished his meal and was quietly observing them without speaking.
Yu Haojie and Ye Jiamei tilted their heads, scrutinizing him with suspicion. After a long pause, Ye Jiamei tentatively asked, “What’s your name?”
“I don’t remember.”
Ye Jiamei was speechless.
“You don’t remember, yet you’re randomly calling my daughter your wife? Are you pretending to be crazy?”
The man frowned slightly. His handsome brows twitched just a little, and his expression immediately showed a hint of grievance.
With such striking features combined with that pitiful look, Ye Jiamei, as a woman, couldn’t help but feel a little moved.
She turned and slapped Yu Haojie’s hand in warning. “Don’t be so loud! Look, you’ve scared him!”
Yu Haojie felt completely wronged.
“Wife, how is he scared? Look at him—he’s a full-grown man! And you’re scolding me instead?”
Ye Jiamei ignored him.
“Fine, fine. I won’t scold you, and you don’t scold him either. I think I should give him a proper check-up. Maybe there really is something wrong with his brain.”
“There’s nothing wrong with me. I just don’t remember anything except my wife.”
“Alright, alright. I’ll just check your wounds, not your brain.”
Hearing this, the man’s frown eased, and he even flashed a faint smile at Ye Jiamei.
Tao Ming, along with the couple, exchanged glances.
“If you don’t remember your name, then we’ll just call you A’Yu. Since we found you in the rain, let’s name you after the rain.”
Ye Jiamei thought for a moment before making her decision. The man, to her surprise, nodded in agreement, even seeming pleased with the name.
But Yu Haojie wasn’t happy about it. “Wife, why are you even giving him a name? Look at him—he can eat, drink, and despite his injuries, he’ll be fine in a few days. Once he’s healed, he should leave.”
“It’s just a name. Do you really have to be so petty? Are we supposed to call him ‘Hey, you’ or ‘Mister Handsome’ instead? Once his wounds are healed and the rain stops, we’ll have him leave, alright?”
Seeing that his wife had no ulterior motives, Yu Haojie sighed in relief.
But A’Yu had been listening to their conversation the entire time. Though he had amnesia, his mind was still sharp. The slight smile on his lips slowly faded.
“Why do I have to leave? If I leave, my wife must come with me.”
Yu Haojie was furious.
“Don’t push your luck! My daughter is not your wife! She’s still an unmarried young lady, and you, a complete stranger, dare to claim her as your wife? You don’t remember anything, yet somehow, you’re certain about this?”
“I just know it. If Father-in-law disapproves of me, then I will formally marry my wife again, with a proper ceremony.”
“Enough, enough! There’s no reasoning with you. No matter what, once you’re healed, you’re leaving.”
Although Yu Haojie was usually easygoing, this was about his daughter’s future happiness. He wasn’t going to be soft-hearted now. His patience ran out, and he didn’t want to waste any more words on this fool.
“Alright, you go check if there’s anything else that needs organizing in this house. Tao Ming, stay and help me examine A’Yu.”
“I’d rather stay and keep watch. What if this fool turns out to be dangerous?”
“Then I will leave first,” Tao Ming said, sensing the tension and wisely excusing himself.
Ye Jiamei stayed behind. With a swift motion, she pulled out a packet of anesthetic powder and knocked A’Yu out before he could react.
With Yu Haojie guarding the door, she took A’Yu into the medical room and began a thorough examination.
It took almost an hour before she emerged, with Yu Haojie immediately rushing to her.
“Well? What’s the verdict? Is this guy mentally unstable?”
“Based on my examination, aside from his injuries, everything else seems fine. His body is actually in great health. Let’s not dwell on it—once he’s recovered, we’ll send him on his way.”
Seeing his wife’s lack of concern, Yu Haojie was still skeptical.
“This man is suspicious. He was found seriously injured in this desolate wasteland. I even asked Tao Ming about that area—he said it’s completely uninhabited, filled with wild beasts. Wife, don’t you think it’s too much of a coincidence that he just happened to appear right in front of our daughter? I suspect there’s something more going on. I smell a conspiracy!”
Hearing Yu Haojie’s serious tone and analysis, even Ye Jiamei, who was usually drawn to good-looking men, started to waver.
“You’re right. And he immediately called Xiao Luo his wife the moment he woke up. That is rather odd. Well, too late to regret now. We already have this troublesome burden on our hands. The rain hasn’t stopped for two days, so let’s just let him recover for a while. Once his wounds are better, we’ll make him leave. In the meantime, we need to be extra careful and not let him discover any of our secrets. And even if he does turn out to be dangerous, I refuse to believe that the three of us together can’t handle one man!”
