Chapter 142: Provocation
This kiss was relentlessly robbing her of her breath. His movements were effortless, yet they contained a fierce, urgent intensity as he forcefully exchanged breath and saliva with her.
At first, Pei Xiqing managed to stay awake and somewhat rational, but soon, her entire body went limp. If he hadn’t been holding her up so firmly, she would have collapsed to the floor.
During the chaotic kiss, she accidentally knocked against his glasses. He quickly pulled them off and discarded them, bringing his hand up to cup the back of her head, leaving her absolutely no room to breathe. By the time he finally let her go, she was completely out of breath, her head spinning as if she were about to faint from lack of oxygen.
Their lips parted with a soft sound, yet Duan Xiaolin couldn’t help but linger. He gently rubbed his lips against hers, savoring the softness in quiet intimacy.
Pei Xiqing didn’t even dare to touch her own lips. They had to be swollen red, burning with a slight, tingling pain.
She had genuinely been stunned by the kiss. It took her a long moment to recover. Her mind was filled with a dull, roaring sound.
Simultaneously, the new totem on her back grew incredibly hot, even stinging slightly when her skin rubbed against the fabric of her clothes.
She bit her swollen lip, her eyes moist and charmingly glazed over. “Aren’t we supposed to be leaving? If we don’t go now… we’ll be late.”
Duan Xiaolin’s eyes darkened with heat. He pinched her chin lightly and kissed her again.
This was the first time he genuinely wanted to break a promise.
The man looked down at her with burning eyes. She almost didn’t dare to meet his gaze. The totem on her back, growing hotter by the second, told her that in this exact moment, she harbored the exact same raw desire for him.
He glanced at his watch. “Shadow will be here at eight o’clock. We have ten minutes left.”
Pei Xiqing parted her lips, stuttering uncontrollably, “Do… do you want to?”
Duan Xiaolin effortlessly controlled her with one hand, pulling her flush against him. “Of course you want it.”
“Seriously?”
He narrowed his eyes. “You’re joking.”
“Hmm?”
“Ten minutes isn’t nearly enough time.”
Pei Xiqing flushed a deep red. “…”
The man placed his large hand on the small of her back, slipping beneath the hem of her shirt to stroke the burning totem. He pressed forward restlessly, his eyes dark with predatory intent. “But… it’s enough time for you.”
Pei Xiqing felt as if a pot of boiling water had been poured over her head. Burning with shame, she softly punched his chest.
Unconvinced, she shot back, “What is that supposed to mean?! What do you mean it’s enough time for me?!”
“Isn’t it?” The man leaned in close, whispering directly into her ear. “Last time, you just cried the whole time. You screamed that it hurt, sobbed, and swore you could hold on. And the two times after that… didn’t you beg me to stop and change positions because it was too much?”
Pei Xiqing desperately wanted to cover his mouth. “!!!”
“You didn’t even last ten minutes those last two times,” he continued smoothly. “I think ten minutes right now is more than enough.”
With that, the man effortlessly lifted her, trapping her against the edge of the wooden table.
By the time Pei Xiqing reacted, he had already gripped her ankles. With no room to struggle or escape, she could only lean forward and bite him in retaliation. She bit down right below his Adam’s apple.
Duan Xiaolin grunted softly, then bit her right back, pressing his lips fiercely against hers once more. Although time was rapidly ticking away, he was neither anxious nor impatient. He moved like a leisurely, apex hunter who already held absolute victory in the palm of his hand.
When Shadow headed upstairs to fetch them, he was temporarily stopped on the second floor by Mudan, who was aggressively haggling with a customer.
He was wearing his expressionless mask, so Mudan couldn’t read his face. She simply called out, “Master Shadow! Where did you rest last night? We have plenty of comfortable guest rooms here. Why don’t you stay with us next time? I’ll personally arrange a great room for you!”
“I slept in the car,” Shadow replied flatly.
“That’s far too inconvenient! Next time you come around, I’ll give you a massive discount!”
“…”
Shadow didn’t want to talk anymore. He simply turned and continued up the stairs.
Mudan watched his retreating back and let out a silent, heavy sigh.
She had finally repaid the old general’s life-saving kindness. Now, she could only pray that Lord Duan wouldn’t execute all of them just for being tangentially connected to Gu He.
But… she knew the chances of mercy were slim.
Mudan sighed again, snatched the payment from the customer, fanned herself with the bills, and walked away with a profound sense of helplessness.
Shadow arrived at the door of the third-floor suite exactly on time.
Just as he raised his hand to knock, the door opened from the inside.
Duan Xiaolin stepped out, effortlessly carrying Pei Xiqing in one arm. In his other hand, he held her tactical backpack filled with her belongings.
Shadow subconsciously reached out to take the heavy bag for him, but the man smoothly dodged his hand.
Seeing his boss personally carry the woman down the stairs without a word, Shadow quietly closed the suite door behind them and mentally cursed himself for being a nosy idiot.
She’s Brother Duan’s beloved. Why would he ever let another man carry her things?
He quickly followed the couple down the stairs.
Seeing Duan Xiaolin carrying a woman into his car as if there was absolutely no one else in the world, the loud, aggressive proprietress settling accounts in the lobby was stunned speechless.
Mudan’s jaw practically hit the floor.
It’s over… She really is Lord Duan’s woman… How the hell did Gu He offend her? There really is no way out for him now.
Shadow got into the driver’s seat and stared straight ahead. Only after he heard the man in the back say “Drive” did he start the engine and pull away from the settlement.
In the back seat, Duan Xiaolin lowered his head to look at the woman resting on his lap with her eyes squeezed shut. The corners of his lips curled up slightly.
Pei Xiqing clutched her spinning head for a long while before finally recovering enough to move. The very first thing she did upon opening her eyes was to scramble to the opposite side of the seat, desperate to put distance between herself and the man.
Duan Xiaolin let her go. He rolled down his window, briefly inspected the surrounding geological conditions, gave Shadow a few route adjustments, and then turned back. Seeing her practically clinging to the opposite door, he reached out, pulled her right back, and locked her securely in his arms.
Pei Xiqing felt too ashamed to face the world. She said nothing, tightly squeezing her eyes shut again.
The man teased softly, “Dizzy again?”
She had been genuinely dizzy earlier, but now she was just faking it out of sheer embarrassment.
Who would have thought that a quick fifteen-minute session—which she had assumed would be a small challenge she could just grit her teeth and get through—would turn out to be so overwhelmingly intense? The medicine in the totem had made her blood boil, overstimulating her to the point where she actually got a nosebleed and fainted right there on the desk.
The medicine was simply too strong.
It was utterly humiliating.
She had actually fainted, losing consciousness with a nosebleed dripping onto her clothes. He had been forced to change her into fresh clothes and carry her out to the car while she was passed out.
“Don’t talk to me,” Pei Xiqing mumbled, burying her face in his chest.
The man replied calmly, “It seems you need more practice. After we try a few more times, your reaction won’t be quite so severe.”
Pei Xiqing’s face burned redder than a monkey’s rear end.
After being tossed around in the back of the SUV for nearly six hours, her headache finally subsided significantly.
The vehicle slowly rolled to a stop.
Shadow opened his door and stepped out first.
Pei Xiqing immediately looked out the tinted window.
Outside, she saw a large, chaotic group of ability users all walking silently in the exact same direction.
Looming in front of them was a massive, heavily fortified building. From the outside, it couldn’t look more ordinary, yet it felt like a bottomless abyss, constantly dragging in desperate people from all directions and trapping them within its walls.
The sight felt strangely familiar. She realized the people walking toward the entrance had the exact same grim, desperate look as the patrons she had seen in the cannibal restaurant.
They were all heading into the underground black market.
She followed the man out of the car and subconsciously caught the hat he tossed to her.
Pei Xiqing looked at it, puzzled. “Huh?”
The man placed an elegant, retro gentleman’s fedora on his own head, looking at her with deep amusement. “The black market has its own strict set of rules.”
“One of those rules is that unaccompanied women are not allowed to enter freely. If they try, they are immediately treated as ‘commodities’ to be sold.”
“Huh?!” Pei Xiqing scoffed. “What a garbage rule.”
If women weren’t allowed to enter safely, this black market was doomed to fail eventually. She hoped it went bankrupt soon.
She frowned. “So, I can’t go in? Do I have to sneak in somehow? That’s going to be impossible with all these guards.”
The man gently took her hand and pressed a light kiss to her knuckles. “I can’t guarantee anything for anyone else… but Mrs. Duan can walk in wherever she pleases.”
Pei Xiqing looked at him, feigning ignorance. “And who exactly is Mrs. Duan?”
Duan Xiaolin smirked. “Whoever asks that question is the one.”
Chapter 143: Guess For Yourself
Pei Xiqing grabbed the man’s hand and squeezed it, managing to loosen his firm grip slightly. Catching the faint hint of surprise on his face, she asked with a satisfied smirk, “Since I’m Mrs. Duan, what does that make you?”
Duan Xiaolin raised a brow. Leaning close to her ear, his voice dropped into a low, teasing whisper. “What do you think I am?”
The topic had already shifted from her playful actions to something deeper. He instantly understood that the answer she was looking for wasn’t superficial at all.
Pei Xiqing leaned against his chest and chuckled softly. “Guess for yourself.”
If she was Mrs. Duan—a title that belonged exclusively to him—didn’t he deserve a special code name that belonged exclusively to her?
Lowering her eyes, she temporarily pushed aside the mischievous thoughts bubbling in her chest. She turned around, adjusted the brim of her hat, and asked quietly, “Is the black market here?”
“There are many ways to enter the black market,” Duan Xiaolin replied. “This is just one of them.”
“What kind of place is it exactly?” she asked. “Does Franlun actually permit its existence?”
“Franlun can only govern rules, not the human heart,” the man explained with a faint, cynical smile. “Endless desire and sheer desperation drive countless people into the underground. Its existence is basically equivalent to the lawless borderlands from before the apocalypse.”
Some things could only be suppressed, never completely eradicated. The darkness in people’s hearts would never truly change.
Pei Xiqing roughly understood the situation. She took a deep breath. “I’m ready.”
In truth, she had never been to a place quite like this. Even before she transmigrated into this novel, the darkest environments she had ever encountered were shady hotel rooms with sleazy directors—places where she had come face-to-face with genuinely corrupt, vile people. The mental preparation required to face the black market was far heavier than bracing oneself for a horde of mindless zombies.
The group of people around them began to move forward. It wasn’t hard to see the paranoid, calculated greed burning in their eyes. Some were desperate to make a fortune, some simply wanted to survive, and others harbored dark, unspeakable motives. Together, they exuded a sinister aura. One could tell at a glance that many of them were ruthless criminals with blood on their hands.
In the early days of the apocalypse, people had more or less banded together to fight against the infected in order to survive. Now that the world was gradually stabilizing, people were suddenly willing to sacrifice human lives just to secure personal wealth.
The man gently squeezed her hand. Grounding herself, Pei Xiqing followed him forward.
Shadow took the lead.
The streets on either side slowly began to darken as the surrounding ruined buildings grew increasingly indistinct. A thick, eerie fog gradually spread through the air. The crowd ahead vanished into the hazy gloom. Although it was still daytime, the oppressive atmosphere gave Pei Xiqing the illusion of walking through the dead of night, a cold breeze sending a shiver down her spine.
Shadow lowered his voice. “We’ll go through the alley ahead, then take an hour’s drive to reach the actual market. Brother Duan’s cover identity is ‘Boss Duan,’ a powerful merchant with access to hospital resources. Remember not to reveal your real names, and whatever you do, do not leave our sight.”
“Understood,” Pei Xiqing said. “Then I’ll just go by ‘Duan Qing.’ Is that okay?”
Shadow blinked behind his mask. “Huh?”
“It’s an alias I used a few days ago,” she explained.
“Okay.”
Duan Xiaolin smiled. “What a nice name.”
Pei Xiqing winked at him. “It works perfectly. It’s easy to remember, and it perfectly suits my role as Mrs. Duan.”
He looked at her deeply. “You aren’t just ‘suited’ for the role.”
She was the only one qualified to hold it.
Aware of Shadow standing right beside them, Pei Xiqing felt a bit self-conscious. She coughed lightly to regain her composure. “Of course I know that.”
She quickly changed the subject. “What about you, Shadow? Do you need a cover name? What should I call you?”
“Call him Wang Yue,” Duan Xiaolin supplied smoothly.
“Huh?” She turned her head in disbelief. What kind of plain, random name was that? “That doesn’t fit Brother Shadow’s mysterious identity and strength at all. It sounds a bit weird.”
Shadow spoke up, his tone perfectly flat. “That is my real name.”
…
Pei Xiqing froze, stunned into silence for two full seconds.
Duan Xiaolin smoothly intervened to save her from the awkwardness. “It has to do with Franlun’s operational rules.”
Pei Xiqing nodded quickly, realizing this wasn’t the time or place to dig into classified protocols. “Understood,” she murmured softly.
After navigating through a damp, filthy, and claustrophobic alleyway, the group boarded a dilapidated black bus one by one.
The condition of the vehicle was abysmal. Pei Xiqing had to tightly grip Duan Xiaolin’s hand just to steady herself on the rickety steps as they climbed aboard. It looked like a standard coach bus, but both the interior and exterior were scorched a charred, charcoal black. The remaining seats were barely usable, and the rusted handrails were coated in a thick layer of grime that would instantly stain bare hands.
The bus roared to life, shaking violently. The intense vibrations reminded her of a memory from before she transmigrated—when she and a film crew had traveled to the deep countryside to shoot a rural-themed movie, bouncing endlessly along a cratered mountain road in a cheap three-wheeled motorcycle.
The physical road conditions here were actually decent, but the bus itself felt like it was on the verge of falling apart. It constantly felt as though crucial parts were about to rattle right off the chassis.
Sitting closely beside Duan Xiaolin, she noticed the surrounding strangers casting glances in their direction. She subtly pulled her hat down lower, avoiding any eye contact.
However, as the ride went on, she gradually realized that the heavy stares weren’t directed at her at all. The other passengers were actually staring intently at the man sitting beside her.
Pei Xiqing was confused but didn’t let it show.
Eventually, the shaky ride came to a halt, and the passengers began to file off the bus. She followed Duan Xiaolin out the door. It was only when several unfamiliar, rough male voices drifted into her ears that she finally raised her head.
The sight that greeted her wasn’t horrifying or shocking in the traditional sense. Instead, it made her feel as though the entire world had been flipped completely upside down.
Chapter 144: All I Know
The prosperity and architectural scale of the black market were absolutely not inferior to those of the official bases.
Even though Pei Xiqing had never seen the capital headquarters in person, she could immediately tell that the subterranean black market stretching out before her completely surpassed the layout and scale of Base Three—a place many survivors had once been incredibly proud of.
Although it was located several meters deep underground, the interior was truly a sight to behold.
At first glance, the sprawling cavern was filled with mysteries. The architecture was magnificent, featuring multi-tiered, retro-style pavilions and courtyards. Bright red lanterns hung high above the streets, casting an eerie, crimson glow. The entire black market practically reeked of copper and extravagance; it looked as if it had been built brick by brick out of solid gold.
And every single brick and tile had been extracted from the blood and sweat of the lowest rung of survivors.
To think that an illicit, shady black market was actually more magnificent than a legitimate human sanctuary… it was simply mind-boggling. Anyone who didn’t know better would assume this was the true capital of humanity.
It was deeply ironic.
Pei Xiqing didn’t say a word, taking it all in silently.
Instead, a group of men who had clearly been waiting at the underground entrance hurried forward. They bowed politely to the man beside her. “Mr. Duan, you’re finally here. We have several major shipments that urgently require your personal signature.”
“Lead the way,” Duan Xiaolin said, giving a slight nod.
“Yes, sir.”
The group escorted them down the bustling main street of the black market, heading deeper into the cavern.
The sides of the street were lined with vendors tending to their stalls and armed customers haggling over goods. Pei Xiqing glanced at one of the vendor tables and immediately noticed something bloody resting on top of it.
It was covered with a dark, stained cloth. Fresh blood dripped steadily from the edge of the table, pooling on the stone floor.
The metallic, fishy stench of raw blood was overwhelming.
She frowned, subconsciously covering her nose and mouth.
The men leading the way were all middle-aged. The one who had spoken first to Duan Xiaolin had a long beard and a perpetual, obsequious smile plastered across his face. He kept chatting enthusiastically as they walked. “Mr. Duan, it’s been quite a while since you last visited the market in person. Things have been a bit turbulent down here lately. I was really hoping you could come and take charge of the situation before things descended into absolute chaos.”
“I trust you to manage the day-to-day operations here, Boss Tang. Even if I hadn’t come, I’m sure you would have found a way to handle it,” Duan Xiaolin replied smoothly.
The bearded man laughed loudly. “You flatter me, sir! If it weren’t for you, Mr. Duan, none of us would be sitting where we are today.”
Another man walking beside him quickly echoed the sentiment. “Exactly! If it weren’t for your direct support, Mr. Duan, and the subsequent industrial supply chains you provided us, none of our factions would have ever been able to expand this much.”
“Mr. Duan’s foresight and strategic planning are truly unmatched!”
Seeing their group approach, the tough-looking crowds on the street consciously scrambled to give way. It was obvious no one dared to offend them. It seemed these men held significant status within the black market’s hierarchy.
Eventually, they were escorted to the entrance of a magnificent, gold-gilded pavilion.
With every step they took up the grand staircase, servants knelt on the wooden steps ahead of them, frantically wiping the floor clean before their shoes could even touch the wood.
As Pei Xiqing lifted her foot for the next step, someone suddenly grabbed her ankle.
Startled, she quickly pulled back. “Don’t…”
The servant didn’t even dare to raise her head. It was a young girl, trembling like a leaf in a hurricane. She repeatedly kowtowed against the hard wood, crying out, “I’m sorry! I’m so sorry! Please don’t punish me! I’m sorry!”
Pei Xiqing felt a pang of sympathy. “It’s fine. Really.”
The men escorting them sneered. “No, Miss. Let her wipe your shoes. It’s what she’s meant for.”
The little girl remained frozen in terror. “Yes… yes, sir…”
Pei Xiqing let out a quiet sigh.
Duan Xiaolin simply reached out and intertwined his fingers with hers. “Let’s go up.”
After the black market bosses entered the luxurious private room, a few servants immediately knelt down to take off their shoes, only to be casually kicked aside by the men. The bosses were joking and teasing each other, but their actions toward the lower-class servants were incredibly brutal and dismissive.
Pei Xiqing and Duan Xiaolin were invited to sit at the head of the table.
She noticed that even the teacups set out in the private room were made of solid gold.
Pei Xiqing: …
The bosses had initially been surprised to see a woman tagging along with Duan Xiaolin, but they had quickly regained their composure. Now, sitting around the table, they finally began to subtly probe for information. “Is this Mr. Duan’s…? We don’t believe we’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing her before.”
“My wife,” Duan Xiaolin stated flatly, instantly ending any further speculation.
No one dared to look at Pei Xiqing with anything less than absolute respect after that.
Pei Xiqing hadn’t wanted to talk to these men, nor did she want any interaction with them. However, after listening to their disgusting banter for a while, she suddenly spoke up. “Have any… strange people come in here recently?”
She put on a convincing act. “I’m actually looking for someone. A thief broke into my house, and fearing he’d be thrown into the base’s prison, he fled all the way out here. I came to track him down.”
“Madam, did you really come all the way to the black market in person just to look for a common thief?” Boss Tang asked, surprised.
“That thief stole a precious family heirloom. I’m very worried about it. Besides, he knows a few things about my family that I absolutely cannot let him tell anyone else.” Pei Xiqing propped her chin on her hand, giving them a sharp, meaningful smile. “You understand how these things go, right?”
“Ah! Yes, yes, yes, of course!” The men immediately relaxed their guard. They instantly assumed she came from a wealthy, aristocratic family from the capital. Rich families always had a mess of shameful, dark secrets. She said she was “catching a thief,” but it was obvious she was actually trying to hunt him down to silence him.
Those who understood the game, understood perfectly.
Boss Tang smiled brightly. “If you’re wondering if there have been any strange newcomers to the black market recently, Madam, you’ve asked the right person! I’m in charge of all personnel and gate management here. Every single person who enters this cavern has to register with my men…”
He shot her a flattering smile. “Except for you and Mr. Duan, of course.”
He immediately turned and snapped his fingers at a subordinate. “Go fetch the black market entry logs for the past month and bring them to Mrs. Duan. If she needs anything to aid her search, you are to cooperate fully! Understood?!”
“Yes, Boss!”
Pei Xiqing stood up smoothly. “I’ll go with him to take a look at the logs. It’ll give me a chance to tour your lovely establishment while I’m at it. This is my first time here—do you have any recommendations on what to see?”
“Of course! Have someone arrange a full VIP tour for Mrs. Duan immediately!”
She shot a subtle wink at Duan Xiaolin, gesturing that she was stepping out. She knew there were likely several highly classified, illicit topics they needed to discuss that couldn’t be spoken of with an “outsider” present. These bosses were still clearly wary of her presence.
Duan Xiaolin gave a slight nod of agreement.
Shadow immediately stepped up to follow Pei Xiqing out the door.
With her gone, the conversation in the private room quickly turned dark and serious.
Suddenly, the hidden door behind the VIP booth opened, and a man covered in fresh blood was violently dragged into the room and thrown onto the floor.
Duan Xiaolin picked up his golden teacup, took a slow sip, and asked, “What exactly did you do?”
The bloody man scrambled onto his knees, kowtowing frantically against the floorboards. “Please! Please let me go!”
Boss Tang delivered a vicious kick to the man’s ribs. “Damn it, answer Mr. Duan when he asks you a question!”
The man trembled uncontrollably. “…I… I was delivering a message to… to General Gu… No, no, no! It was Gu He! I delivered a message for Gu He!”
“Where is he?” Duan Xiaolin asked coldly.
“He’s in the casino!”
Duan Xiaolin chuckled softly. “Take him away.”
Boss Tang stepped forward, eager to claim credit. “Mr. Duan, I noticed something was off with this rat a long time ago. But I never expected him to be passing messages for a dead man! I’ve already ordered my men to take him down, flay him alive, make a mask out of his skin, and sell it! I also had him whipped a few hundred times to make sure he begged for mercy but couldn’t die!”
The bloody man at Duan Xiaolin’s feet instantly widened his eyes, absolute, sheer terror gripping his soul.
“There’s no need for that,” Duan Xiaolin said calmly. “Let him go. Send him back to Mudan.”
“That ungrateful bitch actually helped a dead man pass messages to the capital?!” Boss Tang roared with righteous indignation. “Who cares if that dead brat’s father is a General back at the base?! Even if Marshal Ye and that terrifying Chief Judge from headquarters marched down here themselves, they wouldn’t be able to control our market!”
Duan Xiaolin chuckled softly. “You’re absolutely right.”
“So, should we just execute these base spies directly? To serve as a bloody warning to the others?”
“There’s no rush.” Duan Xiaolin casually tossed a heavy handgun onto the table, letting it slide until it stopped right in front of the bleeding man on the floor. “There is exactly one bullet in the chamber. It is my personal gift to Mother Mudan and the old General.”
At first, the men in the room didn’t understand Duan Xiaolin’s intention.
But Boss Tang quickly caught on, a cruel, admiring smile spreading across his face. “Mr. Duan truly is a master at making factions collapse from the inside out. Your grasp on manipulating human nature is terrifying.”
With only one bullet, only one person could survive—either the highly respected old General at headquarters, or the waypoint proprietress.
Boss Duan was showing absolutely zero mercy. It didn’t matter that one of them was a high-ranking military official and the other had the direct backing of the capital base.
The bloody man on the floor finally realized what was being demanded of him. He began kowtowing frantically toward Duan Xiaolin in desperate gratitude. As long as he wasn’t going to be skinned alive, having his bones broken, and injected with stimulants to keep him awake through the torture, he would gladly deliver the gun to Mudan—even if it meant his own death shortly after.
Duan Xiaolin casually tapped the ash from his cigarette. “Continue your report. We also need to keep a very close eye on any suspicious individuals attempting to infiltrate from the bases.”
Boss Tang beamed with delight. “Of course, sir! That’s a guarantee! I won’t let you down, Mr. Duan!”
“But Mr. Duan… there has been a lot of sudden activity regarding Franlun’s strike teams lately. I was wondering if you had heard any insider details? We also don’t know the specific progress of your operations on the outside. The hospital hasn’t sent any new experimental subjects down here in quite a while. Could it be… that your supply lines are being actively investigated by Franlun?”
The man slowly raised his head, shooting a razor-sharp glance at everyone present in the room.
His tone was incredibly light, yet it was filled with an overwhelming, suffocating pressure.
“Are you suspecting me?”
