Chapter 127: Wait and See

Mrs. Wang was so terrified that the corners of her eyes twitched and the color drained completely from her face.

She had rarely encountered an ability user with such blinding speed. Before she could even react, the tip of a knife was resting a hair’s breadth from her throat. She was practically pinned to the floor.

“What… what are you doing? Handsome, I don’t understand what you’re talking about! Don’t be impulsive, let’s just talk this out!”

Ling Lang held the dagger in a reverse grip, pressing the blade firmly against her neck. He applied just enough pressure to draw blood, letting a thin crimson line slowly drip down her collar and onto her clothes.

Feeling the sharp sting, Mrs. Wang grew even paler with terror. “Handsome, if you have something to say, please, let’s talk it over nicely! Tell me what you’re looking for! Otherwise, I really don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Ling Lang demanded coldly, “Who left that mask on the table?”

Following his gaze to the corner table, Mrs. Wang instantly knew exactly who he was asking about. However, the girl’s terrifying display of power earlier made her incredibly wary. She absolutely couldn’t breathe a word about what had just happened, especially since she suspected Franlun was somehow involved.

“…There are so many people coming and going through my shop, I can’t remember right away. Handsome, are you looking for a specific person or an item? I’m very familiar with everything that goes on within a ten-mile radius. If you’re looking for someone, I might know. If you’re looking for goods, I might know that too.”

“You talk too much nonsense. Just answer exactly what I ask you,” Ling Lang snapped impatiently.

“Yes, yes, of course.”

Ling Lang pressed on. “Do you remember if the person sitting at that table was a man or a woman?” He leaned in closer, his voice dropping dangerously. “And tell me, how is a random restaurant out in the apocalyptic wilderness doing so well? You’d be lucky to get a few customers a day, yet the foot traffic here is unusually high. Or perhaps… they aren’t coming here to eat at all?”

The more Mrs. Wang listened, the more terrified she became. She desperately tried to maintain her composure. “Handsome, this is just a small, honest business. I wouldn’t dare do anything shady!”

“Honest business?” He gestured toward the butchered human corpse hanging behind her in the kitchen. “Is this what you’re serving your guests?”

“That… that… we don’t have a choice!” she stammered. “It’s the end of the world! Where are we supposed to find real cattle and sheep? Outside of the major bases, where can anyone find proper meat? We’re surviving out in the wild; people are just happy to have something to eat.”

Ling Lang clearly had zero patience for her excuses, a flash of genuine anger crossing his face. Sensing her impending death, Mrs. Wang hurriedly blurted out the information he actually wanted: “A woman! It was a woman!”

“She came in alone,” she babbled frantically. “A lot of people in the shop saw her!”

“Is that so? Give me the names, and I’ll verify them one by one. If I find out you’re lying to me, your head will be the next one hanging from that meat hook.”

Mrs. Wang flinched, shrinking back and clutching her bleeding neck. “She… she had long hair, a nice figure, and a very pretty face. She was carrying a backpack and wearing ordinary, loose clothes. She was wearing that mask when she came in, but took it off to eat. I guess she just forgot it. At first, I thought she might be a scavenger from a nearby village, but her skin and overall appearance were too clean. She had to be from one of the major bases, though I can’t say for sure.”

“When was she here, and where did she go?”

Ling Lang walked over and picked up the black mask from the table. He only needed a single glance before slipping it safely into his pocket.

He was absolutely certain this belonged to Pei Xiqing. Even though it wasn’t the exact one he had given her previously, he recognized it. Pei Xiqing had a subtle habit that even she hadn’t noticed: she always folded her masks neatly in half and kept them within arm’s reach.

Combined with the proprietress’s physical description, he was positive he had tracked down the right place.

Recently, the zombie hordes had mostly been congregating around the bases, so he had been methodically sweeping through the abandoned cities furthest away. He completely skipped any area devoid of zombies, knowing Pei Xiqing wouldn’t be there either. Being immune, she wasn’t afraid of the infected in the slightest; in fact, she would likely use a zombie horde as deliberate cover.

“She…” Mrs. Wang swallowed hard, pointing a trembling finger in the direction Pei Xiqing had left. “She walked that way. She was here this evening, probably around ten o’clock.”

“Very good.” Ling Lang slowly turned back to her, each step he took radiating an oppressive, suffocating pressure. A chilling smile suddenly curved his lips. “Now, how should we handle this problem? Kill them? Or send them to the black market?”

Mrs. Wang stared at him in sheer confusion.

Then, following his gaze, she realized he wasn’t speaking to her. There was a tiny, nearly invisible communication earpiece tucked into his ear. He was talking to someone else.

Ling Lang paused, looking down at his feet. A fine pile of gray ash coated the floor beneath his boots. “And what’s this?”

Mrs. Wang’s legs gave out, and she collapsed in terror. “Handsome! That was the girl’s doing, it has absolutely nothing to do with me! I don’t even know what that machine was!”

“Did she do this with her supernatural abilities?”

“Yes, yes! Her power is bizarre! It’s some kind of giant snake!”

Ling Lang smirked, kneeling to pinch a bit of the ash between his fingertips with deep satisfaction. It seemed Pei Xiqing was getting quite proficient at wielding the Qiong Snake. To instantly reduce a metal machine to this level of fine ash required immense control and power.

Mrs. Wang groveled on the floor, frantically tugging at his pant leg. “I’ve told you everything I know! Please don’t kill me! And please don’t send me to the black market! I beg you!”

Ling Lang lowered his cold eyes to look at her. “I won’t kill you. But you are definitely going to the black market.”

“No! I don’t want to! I can’t go to the black market!”

Ling Lang crouched down. Without even looking, he raised his free hand; a burst of elemental energy violently erupted, instantly intercepting and crushing the enforcers who had tried to ambush him from behind. At the same time, the tip of his dagger stopped mere millimeters from the proprietress’s eyeball.

“I suspected there was something very wrong with your little shop. It’s too peaceful, too comfortable for being out in the middle of a wasteland. So, as soon as I arrived, I had my people run a background check on this place.” He tilted his head. “I have to say, this is a glaring contradiction. One of the regional leaders of the black market… is actually terrified of going to the black market?”

Cold sweat dripped down Mrs. Wang’s face. Her lips trembled violently as she choked out, “You… who the hell are you?”

Ling Lang smirked, his voice dropping into a deadly, mocking whisper. “I’m from Franlun, of course. The very people you’ve been so worried about.”

A second later, a woman’s bloodcurdling scream erupted from inside the restaurant.

Ling Lang casually drove his dagger into the wooden table. Blood pooled rapidly around the blade, and a gruesome, severed eyeball was impaled perfectly on the tip of the knife.

He easily dispatched the remaining enforcers at the door, then raised his hand to press the comms button on his earpiece. “Brother, what’s the hold-up? I think I’m going to find her much faster than you are.”

A calm, deeply resonant male voice replied through the headset. “Is that so? Then we’ll wait and see.”

“She probably didn’t realize this place was a front for the black market,” Ling Lang noted.

“She had no idea.”

“If she did know, things would be a lot trickier,” Ling Lang said. “Are you not heading this way?”

“Continue following up on the black market activities,” Duan Xiaolin ordered calmly. “Do not worry about anything else.”

“Understood.”

Ling Lang tapped his earpiece, cutting the connection, and climbed back into his heavily modified SUV. Outside, the blood left pooling on the barren ground was quickly buried beneath the shifting wind and sand.

Chapter 128: No Hope

Pei Xiqing knew something was wrong the moment she woke up.

She was living in a small, deserted town alongside the members of S1. No one was supposed to know she was hiding out in this remote, forgotten corner on the second floor of a ruined building.

Yet, as soon as she opened her eyes in the morning, she heard the distinct, heavy rumble of vehicles passing right beneath her window. The grinding noise of massive, armored tires rolling over the cracked, debris-strewn asphalt was so deafening it was impossible to ignore.

She got out of bed, crept to the window, and parted the curtains just enough to take a look.

From her vantage point, she couldn’t see the main road leading into town, only the narrow street facing the lake. Her view was mostly obstructed, save for what she could see through the kitchen window. But just from that quick glance, she counted at least a dozen fully loaded armored tactical vehicles driving past her building.

She recognized them as the S1 convoy at a glance.

The protagonists are truly worthy of being the protagonists, she thought dryly. After fighting through a massive zombie horde and traversing the wasteland for so long, they still maintained a fleet of sophisticated military equipment and commanded a large squad of high-tier ability users.

Pei Xiqing was far too lazy to involve herself in whatever chaos they were stirring up. Instead, she boiled a pot of hot water in her makeshift kitchen, washed some of her foraged vegetables, sat down, and enjoyed a quiet, self-service hot pot for breakfast.

The commotion downstairs continued for quite a while, the loud voices and revving engines echoing through the streets. It took a full seven or eight hours before the town finally fell quiet again.

By late afternoon, Pei Xiqing was full and had just woken up from a pleasant nap. She was just getting ready to cook dinner when a sudden knock echoed from her front door.

She froze, nearly dropping the vegetables in her hands.

It shouldn’t be that serious, right?

If the grunts from S1 actually dared to mess with her again, they would be signing their own death warrants. Besides, Pei Yanting knew she was in the city; surely she had given her subordinates strict orders to leave her alone.

It was only six o’clock in the evening, but the sky outside was already pitching black.

Who would come knocking at her door at this hour?

Pei Xiqing didn’t open the door immediately. Instead, she commanded the invisible Qiong Snake to squeeze through the crack beneath the door to investigate.

Two seconds later, Pei Xiqing swung the door open, her eyes widening in surprise. “Tang Yitong!”

Tang Yitong was wearing a black, frilly princess dress, looking exactly like a cute little witch. She skipped inside excitedly, her eyes darting around the room. “Wow! Sister Qing, you’ve decorated this place so beautifully! It looks completely different from when we first got here!”

“I’ve had a lot of free time these past few days, so I did some tidying up,” Pei Xiqing smiled. “I was actually planning on going out to scavenge for some decent furniture, or maybe see if I can find anything salvageable.”

“You definitely need to go out and shop! I know a fantastic black market trading post where you can buy practically anything! The prices are super cheap, too!”

“Really?” Pei Xiqing closed and locked the heavy door behind her. “But first, tell me—why did you come back so soon? Didn’t you find your squad?”

Tang Yitong sighed heavily, her shoulders slumping. “I did find them. But they were assigned to other high-priority tasks, and I had my own specific orders to carry out. So, we ended up splitting up again after barely two days.”

“Ah, I see. It sounds like your vanguard unit has a lot on its plate. The schedule must be incredibly tight if you have to race against the clock like that.”

“Oh, don’t even mention it. Our mission load has been getting heavier and heavier lately.” Tang Yitong unbuckled her tactical gear, kicked off her boots, and practically dove onto the makeshift bed. She let out a long, comfortable sigh. “Ahhh! This bed is still so comfortable! Honestly, it’s way better than my cramped bunk back at the base!”

Pei Xiqing picked up the girl’s scattered boots and lined them up neatly by the door. She then dragged Tang Yitong’s heavy tactical backpack inside and asked, “Are you hungry? Do you want something to eat?”

“Give me a minute, Sister… I’m just so exhausted right now…”

“Didn’t you get enough sleep while you were traveling?”

“It’s that new Base Six,” Tang Yitong groaned into the mattress. “It’s actually heavily connected to the black market syndicate. The underground market that got wiped out when Base Three fell has completely resurfaced there. It’s so annoying! I’m supposed to be a frontline zombie killer, but command keeps sending me on these stealth recon missions to investigate black market supply chains. My brothers are way too busy with their own ops to back me up, so I’m doing all the legwork.”

“Base Six…” Pei Xiqing silently repeated the name.

This wasn’t the first time she had heard of the place today.

She hadn’t expected to be drawn back into the orbit of the black market so quickly.

Suddenly, Tang Yitong flipped over and sat bolt upright. She frantically reached into the side pocket of her tactical bag.

A moment later, she pulled out a brand new, highly advanced communication radio.

She held it up like she was presenting a priceless treasure. “Ta-da!”

“It’s a brand new military-grade model, completely different from that broken piece of junk you found last time. Try it out! You can contact whoever you need to reach!”

Pei Xiqing took the heavy device, genuinely surprised. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome! My brothers were rushing off to their next op, and they literally tossed this to me before I could even finish asking them for a favor.” Tang Yitong waved her hands eagerly. “Hurry, hurry! Call your friends!”

Pei Xiqing took the communicator and stepped out onto the small balcony. It took her a few minutes to navigate the advanced interface and input Ling Lang’s encrypted frequency.

This time, the connection engaged immediately.

“Hello? Is this Ling Lang?”

“This is the Franlun Acting Command Center at Capital Headquarters. Please state your clearance and— wait. Pei Xiqing…?!”

Long Yan’s voice echoed through the speaker, so shocked her jaw had practically hit the floor.

“Yes, Sister Long Yan, it’s me.”

“Where the hell have you been?!”

“I didn’t want to return to the capital headquarters,” Pei Xiqing admitted softly, “so I’ve just been wandering around the outer territories.”

“I figured as much.” Long Yan let out a long, heavy sigh of relief. “But wait, are you okay? Did anything happen during this time?”

“No, I’m fine.”

“Damn it, it’s too late. Ling Lang already went out to look for you.”

“He went out looking for me? With his injuries?”

“What’s a little injury to that kid? He’s a dual-element user; his physical resilience is far beyond normal human limits.”

“Where is Brother Duan?” Pei Xiqing asked hesitantly.

“Brother Duan had a few complications during his treatment, but he’s fully stabilized now,” Long Yan replied. “You don’t need to worry about him. What could possibly permanently damage high-tier ability users like them? Stop worrying about them all the time. What about you? Have you run into any trouble? Has anyone bullied you?”

“No,” Pei Xiqing said. “I’m perfectly fine.”

In truth, she hadn’t been overly panicked. She knew the plot of the novel; neither Duan Xiaolin nor Ling Lang was destined to die this early in the story. However, the situation during the zombie siege had been so genuinely desperate that a lingering thorn of anxiety had been lodged in her heart for days. Hearing Long Yan confirm they were alive and recovering finally allowed her to completely relax.

Long Yan’s tone shifted, becoming a bit lighter. “You know, the new Base Six is actually a pretty interesting place. If you aren’t busy, you should wander over there and check it out.”

Pei Xiqing didn’t think much of the suggestion. “Oh, maybe. If I’m in the area, I’ll take a look.”

Long Yan chuckled dryly. “But seriously… do you really have no intention of coming back?”

“…I don’t.”

“So, have you found someone out there who can give you the total freedom you want?”

Pei Xiqing blinked, confused. “What?”

“It’s nothing,” Long Yan said with a small smile in her voice. “You just have fun out there. But Brother Duan… well, he might not be so easily reasoned with.”

“I’ve talked to him about this before. We already established an understanding.”

“But Xiqing, you broke your promise to him. Did you know that? The moment Brother Duan woke up from his coma, he forced his way out of medical and went straight back to the ruins of Base Three. He waited at the rendezvous point for days, but you never showed up.”

A sudden, sharp pang of guilt struck Pei Xiqing’s heart. “…I didn’t know.”

She genuinely hadn’t known. If she had known he was actually waiting for her, despite his injuries, she would have done whatever it took to get there.

“I ran into some trouble on my way to the extraction point and got delayed for a few days,” she explained quietly.

“It’s fine, it’s fine. As long as you’re safe, that’s all that matters,” Long Yan said, though her tone turned serious. “But… we did intercept some interesting intel. We know you spent more than a day traveling with Pei Yanting and Xiao Yue. Xiqing, that Xiao Yue bastard clearly has ulterior motives.”

She paused, choosing her next words carefully. “Try to keep your distance from them. There are certain things they’re involved in that I really don’t want you getting dragged into.”

“The more you know about their operations, the more dangerous it will be for you. If you get tangled up with them, you won’t be able to explain yourself to Brother Duan or Franlun. And you know exactly how Franlun operates. We save people, yes, but we also kill. The Chief Judge’s hands are stained with just as much blood as they are with salvation.”

“What I’m trying to say is… some of the truths you might uncover out there could completely shatter your worldview.”

Those guiding words instantly reminded Pei Xiqing of the horrific underground black market and the gruesome video Pei Yanting had shown her.

Only she and Pei Yanting were supposed to know about that footage. But judging from Long Yan’s tone, Franlun was already fully aware that the video had leaked.

Did Duan Xiaolin and Franlun simply not care if others saw that footage? Or was there another layer of truth to the black market that she didn’t know yet?

Don’t apply standard moral labels to true villains, she reminded herself. They were villains for a reason. There was no need to judge them through the lens of traditional morality or expect them to act like virtuous heroes. But at the same time, she shouldn’t look at them through rose-tinted glasses just because she cared about them.

Pei Xiqing lowered her eyes in silence. She could accept a lot of dark realities, but at her core, she was still just an ordinary person. There were some lines she simply couldn’t cross.

“Sister Long Yan, thank you for the warning,” Pei Xiqing said softly. “But please… don’t tell them I was on the phone with you. Just tell them I’m safe, and that they don’t need to worry about me anymore.”

Long Yan let out a heavy sigh. “Oh, honey… why didn’t you tell me that earlier? The literal second you spoke your first word, this comm channel automatically pinged your exact GPS coordinates directly into their personal tracking systems.”

Chapter 129: Both Sides Suffer

After ending the call, Pei Xiqing retreated into the bedroom.

Tang Yitong was already waiting for her. Seeing her walk in, she asked curiously, “Sister Qing? How was your conversation with your friend?”

“It’s… it was okay.” Pei Xiqing paused, her tongue feeling a bit tied. After a couple of seconds, she managed to say, “Do you want to rest now?”

“Yes, yes!” Tang Yitong chirped, lying back down comfortably on the makeshift bed.

Pei Xiqing’s mind was racing.

Something feels seriously wrong.

Just as her anxiety began to spike, another heavy knock echoed from the front door.

Oh my god!

Pei Xiqing shuddered violently and instantly shot up from her chair.

So fast?!

The sudden noise also startled Tang Yitong awake. Rubbing her eyes, she sat up, looking a bit confused. “Who is it? Besides me, who else would come knocking on your door this late at night? Could it be your friend?”

Pei Xiqing panicked, her eyelids twitching uncontrollably, but she forced herself to regain her composure. “…I’ll go change my clothes and open the door in a minute.”

“Okay!”

She looked down at her current outfit. The clothes were thin, offered little warmth, and looked decidedly like men’s wear. If Duan Xiaolin saw her dressed like this, he would probably be furious at her for being so careless and not taking proper care of herself.

And her hair… it was messy and incredibly dry. Although she managed to take a cold shower and wash her hair every two days, the harsh conditions in the wild simply couldn’t compare to the pristine facilities back at the base.

Furthermore, she hadn’t looked in a mirror for days; she had no idea what kind of state she actually looked like. She hurried into the small bathroom to clean herself up, quickly stripping off her wrinkled clothes and changing into a fresh set. Just as she finally felt mentally prepared and stepped out, she saw Tang Yitong standing right at the front door.

The door wasn’t open yet. Tang Yitong was squinting, peeking out through the peephole.

Pei Xiqing asked in a low, panicked whisper, “What are you looking at?”

Tang Yitong made a sharp shushing gesture. “The people outside…”

Terrified that Duan Xiaolin would misunderstand the situation—given his intensely possessive personality, he would go absolutely ballistic if he found an unknown operative in her house—Pei Xiqing quickly tried to pull her back. “It must be my friend. Don’t rush to say anything. I’ll handle whatever questions he has…”

“It’s my brothers!” Tang Yitong suddenly announced.

“…Ah???”

Pei Xiqing was completely dumbfounded.

“It’s my brothers!” Tang Yitong repeated excitedly, throwing the door open. “They finished their mission early and came to pick us up!”

“Brothers! Ahhh! It really is you! You guys are so fast, you tracked me down in just one day!”

A tall man standing at the front of the group reached out and affectionately ruffled her hair. “Yeah. The mission went a lot smoother than we expected, so we came straight here to find you.”

“That’s awesome!”

As she spoke, Tang Yitong grabbed Pei Xiqing—who was still trying to tie her long hair back—and pulled her forward. “This is the sister I told you about! Isn’t she super beautiful?!”

Pei Xiqing instinctively gathered her long hair with one hand, revealing her pale, striking face. She stared blankly at the towering men crowded around her doorway.

There were seven or eight of them in the squad. Almost every single one stood over 1.8 meters tall. Clad in heavy tactical gear with only their sharp eyes visible beneath their helmets, they stood tall and straight, radiating an undeniable aura of dangerous mystery.

For a split second, she had genuinely thought it was Ling Lang’s extraction team. She couldn’t react for a moment.

“Hello,” the leading man spoke first, extending a gloved hand toward her. “Our little sister mentioned you to us a few days ago. She said you saved her out in the wasteland and provided her with food and shelter. We are the Special Ability Vanguard from Base Two, designated squad T329. I am the team captain, Tan Yuan, and these are my operatives. We are all directly affiliated with the military carrier division of Base Two.”

Pei Xiqing politely shook his hand. “I’m Pei… Duan Qing.”

“A pleasure, Miss Duan. We already know your name.” Tan Yuan’s sharp gaze lingered on her face for a fraction of a second before he smoothly released her hand. “But right now is not the time for introductions. Little sister, you and Miss Duan need to pack your things immediately. We have to evacuate this sector as soon as possible. A massive, high-threat zombie horde will be arriving in a few minutes.”

“Why can’t we just hold our ground?” Tang Yitong pouted, resting a hand on her weapon. “I can just kill them. Why do we have to run away? Do you know how hard I’ve been working these past few days?”

Tan Yuan smiled faintly. “We need to report back to the base on schedule. We cannot afford any further delays out here.”

“So annoying,” Tang Yitong groaned, her face falling. “I just wanted to take a proper break.”

“There’s no time. You can sleep in the armored transport. Our convoy is already idling downstairs, so we need to move.” Tan Yuan turned back to Pei Xiqing. “Miss Duan, I hope you will cooperate and evacuate with us. The perimeter will be completely overrun shortly, and we’d prefer not to see any unnecessary casualties.”

He paused, his expression hardening. “Furthermore, our scouts have detected two unidentified hostile forces rapidly converging on this city. Just to be safe, it’s best we clear out immediately.”

Pei Xiqing frowned. “Two forces?”

“Yes. One is a squad designated S1, but it looks like they are already preparing to retreat.”

Pei Xiqing instantly realized what was happening.

The plot is forcing the protagonists and the villains to clash again.

According to the novel, whenever these two factions collided, both sides would suffer massive, devastating losses.

The blood feud between Xiao Yue and Duan Xiaolin had already deteriorated past the point of no return. If they crossed paths here, neither side would walk away unscathed.

This is all my fault, she thought, a knot twisting in her stomach. Why had she lingered in this city despite knowing the protagonist’s squad was here? Now, if Brother Duan and Ling Lang arrived to extract her, they would inevitably collide with S1. As the male protagonist, Xiao Yue possessed an absurdly thick plot armor and a golden finger capable of inflicting severe damage on Duan Xiaolin.

Brother Duan had barely recovered from his critical viral infection, and Ling Lang had only just healed from his own brutal injuries. If they were severely hurt again, it would be entirely because of her.

In a split second, she made her decision. “Yitong, you and your squad go on ahead. I’m going to S1.”

Tang Yitong didn’t know much about the S1 unit. Her only impression of them was that they were constantly fighting, leaving a trail of blood, and always seemed to be besieged by zombies wherever they went.

“But Sister Qing, do you even know them? Isn’t it a bad idea to just run over there? I’ll come with you!”

“No, it’s too dangerous for you to get involved.”

That’s the main protagonist’s group. This incoming wave of zombies was almost certainly zeroing in on them again. The protagonist squad was a literal magnet for disaster.

Tang Yitong looked reluctant. “But…”

“Your squad has strict orders to complete. Go with them, and don’t worry about me.” Pei Xiqing gently pinched the girl’s cheek. “I’m sorry. We’ll see each other again if fate allows.”

Tang Yitong sighed heavily. “Okay… but it’s fine! I’ll wait for you! I really will wait for you!”

“Okay.” Pei Xiqing gently pushed the girl toward Tan Yuan. “You guys go first. I’ll pack my bag and leave right behind you.”

Tan Yuan nodded respectfully. “Miss Duan, we’ll see each other again if we are lucky. If the opportunity arises, I hope to welcome you to Base Two.”

“Goodbye.”

As soon as the T329 squad filed out, Pei Xiqing frantically began packing.

Fortunately, she didn’t have much to carry. Everything easily fit into her single tactical backpack.

She slung the Franlun saber over her shoulder and began searching for the plain mask she had worn earlier, only to realize it was completely missing.

She paused, thinking back.

I definitely left it at that black market restaurant.

There was no time to go back for it now, and it wasn’t exactly an expensive item anyway. She dug into her bag, pulled out the custom mask Ling Lang had given her, strapped it onto her face, zipped her black jacket up to her chin, and rushed out the door.

As soon as she hit the street, she sprinted toward the patch of weeds where she had been foraging earlier.

The S1 camp was in a state of chaotic frenzy, hastily packing up their gear to evacuate.

Seeing that the S1 vehicles were still there and just beginning to roll out, she breathed a massive sigh of relief. Without hesitation, she sprinted toward the lead off-road vehicle, yanked the passenger door open, and threw herself inside just as the car accelerated.

Sitting in the front seat, Pei Yanting immediately whipped her head around, leveling her weapon.

Seeing the masked intruder, she was stunned for two seconds before recognizing the figure. “Pei Xiqing?!”
