Chapter 43: Doing My Absolute Best
Wen Xiuyi walked out the door still confused about how exactly they had gotten kicked out.
“Did… did your grandma just throw us out?” Right? That’s what just happened, right?
Wen Yao, holding Da Tou’s hand, glanced at him and ruthlessly said, “Wrong. It was you. We got dragged down by you.”
Wen Xiuyi: “…” Where’s my precious daughter? The one who was supposed to be my little cotton-padded jacket? You’re full of holes!
“Hmph! Son, let’s go home.” Wen Xiuyi huffed and picked up Da Tou in his arms and stormed off.
Wen Yao and Wen Jun looked at their slightly childish Professor Wen and chuckled behind his back. Old kid—yep, that’s what he was, a true old kid at heart.
“Since we’ve decided to study medicine, we need to be prepared. At the very least, we need to find a good master,” Wen Yao said, rubbing her chin.
Wen Jun looked at her. “Yao Yao, we’re strangers here. Where are we gonna find a doctor who’ll take in disciples?”
“Shh, let me think.” Wen Yao kept rubbing her chin as she pondered.
That miracle doctor from the novel—what was his name again?
“What was it… Jin… Jin Xiuyi? Jin Xiuyi…” Wen Yao muttered while trying to recall.
Wen Jun heard the name and asked curiously, “Yao Yao, who’s this Jin Xiuyi?”
Wen Yao beckoned him closer. Once he leaned in, she whispered in his ear, “One of the simps in the novel, known as a miracle doctor—Jin Xiuyi. A young man with brilliant medical skills, met the female lead in a dramatic encounter, fell hopelessly in love with her, and saved her from danger time and time again. Not only that, because the female lead loved the male lead, this Jin guy even helped the male lead countless times out of his own one-sided devotion.”
“And in the end? This guy, who should’ve been a noble healer, got obsessed with the heroine and resorted to shady methods to help her and the male lead seize power. Basically, he poisoned all the good people in their way, ended up being condemned by everyone—including the heroine and male lead. Yep, the same ones he risked everything for.”
Wen Yao curled her lip in disdain. “Tell me that isn’t the biggest joke ever. They stood on a moral high ground and blamed him. I mean, come on.”
Wen Jun was equally shocked. That man completely betrayed the ethics of a healer.
“Then… where’s this miracle doctor now?” Wen Jun asked. The heroine hadn’t been born yet, which meant Jin hadn’t yet turned into a twisted, love-brain simp. If he was truly skilled, and if he could take Wen Jun as a disciple now—he might even change the story’s course. Kill two birds with one stone.
Wen Yao saw the look on his face and immediately said, “Put that thought away. This miracle doctor is only a few years older than Da Tou in the book. Right now he’s probably just a five or six-year-old kid.”
“…Seriously?” Wen Jun was dumbfounded.
But Wen Yao’s next words cheered him right up.
“However, the book says his medical skills were passed down through his family, so there must be a great doctor in his household. The book never said exactly who or where though.”
She paused mid-step, frowning in frustration. “Wait… Jin… The surname Jin sounds familiar.”
But she just couldn’t place it. Her brain glitched like when you’re frantically looking for something at home, can’t find it, and then it randomly shows up later when you’re not looking.
But she couldn’t wait for it to pop up later!
Wen Jun suddenly said, “Didn’t the herb shop we sold to last time have a Doctor Jin?”
“Oh—RIGHT!” Wen Yao’s voice shot up in excitement. Even Wen Xiuyi and Da Tou turned around.
“What are you two doing back there?” they called out.
Wen Yao rushed forward, her voice excited. “Dad! I figured out where Big Bro can study medicine!”
Wen Xiuyi lit up but glanced at their surroundings and lowered his voice while hugging Da Tou tighter. “Okay okay, walk and talk—let’s get home first.”
If Wen Yao remembered something, it probably had to do with the plot.
The four of them hurried home and crowded into Wen Xiuyi’s room. After settling Da Tou onto a stool, Wen Xiuyi sat down too. “Tell us, Yao Yao.”
Wen Yao grabbed a stool and sat as well. “I suddenly remembered I once heard about someone with great medical skills who trained a future miracle doctor. If my brother could learn from him, he might become the real miracle doctor.”
Wen Xiuyi immediately understood what she meant by “heard”—it was code between the three of them for anything that came from the original novel.
That way, Da Tou wouldn’t understand and they could still talk freely. If they kept hiding things from the boy, it might mess with his sense of security.
“Where is this guy? Easy to find?” Wen Xiuyi knew people with real skill often had weird quirks. Hermits, you know—they liked hiding in mountains and whatnot.
But Wen Yao just grinned mysteriously. “So close it’s right under our nose. He’s Doctor Jin from that pharmacy where my brother and I sold herbs.”
Wen Xiuyi hadn’t met him but remembered the story. The siblings had said the pharmacy owner was a decent guy.
“Well, what’re we waiting for? Ask tomorrow if he’s taking disciples and get your brother enrolled!” Wen Xiuyi said happily. It felt good knowing the plot ahead.
Wen Yao agreed. Best to strike while the iron was hot, before anything unexpected happened.
Even though Da Tou didn’t quite follow everything, he could tell it was something good. His big brother was going to learn medicine!
He climbed onto his stool, dipped his finger in water, and wrote four characters on the table: “Big Brother is awesome.”
Wen Jun smiled, feeling his gloom melt away at last.
He patted Da Tou’s head and said, “Once I’ve learned enough, I’ll treat Da Tou’s throat.”
But Da Tou pulled away, dodged the hand, and sat quietly again.
He could talk—he just didn’t want to. Hmph.
“Then it’s settled. Tomorrow I’ll take Wen Nong to the dock, and Yao Yao, you go with your brother to ask about apprenticeship. Be respectful—these high-level types tend to have tempers. Watch your tone, even if you have to be shameless, just win the master over first.” After all, that was the most important thing.
Wen Yao beamed. “Don’t worry, Dad. Tomorrow I’ll go talk to the pharmacy assistant first, see what Doctor Jin likes. We’ll cater to his tastes. There’s no way we can’t win the old guy over.”
From what they’d seen last time, Doctor Jin was strict. No idea if he’d be easy to deal with.
But no matter how hard it was—Wen Yao would give it her all for her brother.
