Chapter 40: Super Mold 4
“If he doesn’t like to eat any vegetables or fruits, then I suggest he take these two types of complex vitamins.”
The doctor spoke, taking out two different brands of vitamin tablets. “Additionally, these vitamin gummies are also a very good choice.”
Facing the enthusiastic sales pitch, Chu Yian accepted everything. “I’d like ten of each of these vitamin tablets and gummies.”
Soon, the items were packed.
Besides these vitamins, Chu Yian also specifically bought some cold medicine, pain relievers, and hemostatic drugs.
Although this wasn’t a world of infectious diseases, the scene of a group of people fighting and even killing each other outside the villa in the late stages of the previous game was something she couldn’t forget.
After buying these things, she was finally ready to go back.
A dilapidated pedicab looked somewhat out of place next to the upscale and grand Residential Area. If Chu Yian hadn’t familiarized herself with the security guard over the past two days, he wouldn’t have let her in.
“Little sister, you went out so early this morning and only got a pedicab?”
The security guard looked at her in surprise.
“Oh, don’t even mention it.”
Chu Yian seized the opportunity to put on an act. “This morning, the supermarket was so crowded, I couldn’t even squeeze in. When I first moved here, didn’t I buy some food to store? Well, all that rice, flour, and vegetables, they all went bad.
Now I’m just living on a few packs of instant noodles and biscuits. I’m really fed up.”
Her complaints sounded quite convincing, and the security guard expressed his deep sympathy. “Didn’t you still manage to buy a pack? It’s fine, it’s fine. What year is it now? How could there be a famine?”
“This is medicine…”
Chu Yian opened the bag to show him the medicine boxes inside. “I’ve been frail and sickly since childhood, so these medicines are always on hand.”
“I see.”
The security guard looked at her small stature, no wonder she wasn’t tall. Just like that, she was pitied again.
After talking with the security guard, Chu Yian parked the pedicab downstairs and jogged back to the building where she lived. Along the way, she also encountered many elderly men and women, and even entire families rushing back with groceries.
They had all sorts of food, in large and small bags, which made Chu Yian, sandwiched in between, look particularly shabby.
But as soon as she got home and took out her treasure box, it was quite full!
Washing the pot, boiling hot water, and then sterilizing these foods!
Today, she bought 15 packs of instant noodles, 8 boxes of self-heating rice, 4 boxes of self-heating hot pot, 3 canned yellow peaches, and 5 canned douchi fish at a high price. This added some more stock to her small, limited pantry.
She didn’t dare to leave these things out, so she neatly arranged them all in the refrigerator. At this point, she wasn’t differentiating between fresh and frozen; if it could be squeezed in, it was good.
With these items crammed in, to prevent mold contamination, she only dared to take out as much as she needed. Next to it, she kept a small notebook for recording food. Her total supplies now were:
Filling foods: 35 bags of instant noodles, 8 boxes of self-heating rice, 4 boxes of self-heating hot pot, 17 compressed biscuits.
Quick energy replenishment: 24 chocolate bars, 24 Snickers bars;
Snacks: 3 canned yellow peaches.
Other: 5 canned douchi fish.
20 boxes of vitamin tablets, 10 boxes of vitamin gummies.
If she ate one pack of instant noodles daily as a base, supplemented with other foods, not starving to death shouldn’t be a big problem. But she couldn’t take risks; once mold corroded the food later on, she would face the predicament of insufficient food.
And after buying all sorts of miscellaneous things, she still had over thirty-five thousand left.
What else could she do? She definitely had to continue going out to hoard supplies!
Chu Yian found a bowl and planned to go out after eating. Following her usual habit, she casually turned on the news next to her.
“Hello, dear viewers, this is the news station, and we are interrupting with a new news bulletin.”
“Currently, a large amount of food in people’s homes has spoiled and grown mold. There are rumors that it is suspected to be a leak of super mold from an X country laboratory, which will trigger a large-scale food crisis. For this, we are currently clarifying to all viewers:”
“Firstly, the super mold has not yet been verified. Relevant experts stated that due to the heavy rainfall during this plum rain season, coupled with sellers and customers not taking adequate moisture-proof measures, mold damage has occurred.”
“Secondly, our country’s grain reserves are the second largest in the world. There are currently over 102 granaries, enough to feed all our people for a year. Therefore, the food crisis is an unfounded rumor. Please, all citizens, do not believe or spread rumors!”
A “rumor debunking” message instantly relieved countless tense families.
Chu Yian, however, felt this was an opportunity!
Many people would believe the news was true, which would definitely reduce the number of people rushing for supplies by more than half. Although doing so might seem a bit unethical, there was no other way.
Her water had boiled, but she hadn’t even put in the instant noodles.
She grabbed a Snickers bar, eating it as she walked, jogging all the way downstairs.
“Oh, little sister, you just went up and now you’re coming down again?”
The security guard greeted her, looking at her.
“Something happened at my shop.”
Chu Yian got on the small pedicab, pedaling so hard that sparks almost flew from the chain, all to get some good things at the supermarket.
The security guard watched her receding figure, a little surprised—it turned out that someone frail and sickly could pedal a tricycle so fast.
She finally arrived at the supermarket!
Compared to when she came in the morning, there were indeed far fewer people here. But even though there was no queue, the inside was still packed with people. The shelves in the food section were already empty of edibles!
The only things left were various seasonings, and a pack of white sugar mixed with salt.
White sugar?!
Chu Yian looked at the item, quickly put it into her shopping cart, and then added some oil, salt, and seasonings on top to weigh it down, preventing anyone from taking it as they passed by.
It was just a pack of white sugar that would normally cost two yuan, yet she had to go to great lengths to get it now.
Her haul from the supermarket: a pile of useless seasonings and a pack of white sugar.
Fortunately, Chu Yian’s mindset was still quite good.
Knowing it was hard to buy things now, she didn’t give up because of the meager haul. She put the items into her treasure box, then rode her bike to a place further away from the Residential Area to look around.
She accidentally found a… wet market?!
As soon as she entered, a foul stench almost drove her away.
The wet market was mostly deserted. Scattered uncleaned vegetable leaves around had grown thick mold, and the smell emanated from these leftover rotten vegetable leaves, animal organs, and other things. Just accidentally taking a whiff was enough to make one’s scalp tingle from the stench.
She was about to turn and leave, but then she saw a shop still bravely open inside the wet market…
