Chapter 346: What Are We Waiting For
Xu Youyou didn’t get angry when she heard this. Instead, she asked, “Who did you buy it from?”
The Red Dragon King glared at Wu Xiaoguang.
Wu Xiaoguang, dragged into the situation, had no choice but to step forward and say stiffly, “I made the decision and sold the item to Mr. Red here…”
The elderly Madam Wu standing beside Xu Youyou fixed her cold gaze on her grandnephew and said, “Since when did a wastrel like you get to make decisions about family matters?”
Wu Xiaoguang retorted confidently, “I’m the eldest grandson of the Wu family. Great-aunt, you married out of the family. You shouldn’t be meddling in your maiden home’s affairs.”
The old lady said, “The old master is still lying in the hospital. Family matters aren’t yours to decide.”
A flash of malice appeared in Wu Xiaoguang’s eyes as he said, “Great-grandfather is old. Who knows if he’ll survive this?”
The old lady scolded, “You ungrateful brat!”
Wu Xiaoguang said, “Great-aunt, don’t blame me for speaking harshly. Great-grandfather is already ninety-seven. Do you really think he’ll make it to a hundred? Do you think he even can?”
The old lady looked at him coldly and said, “Even if the old master passes, it should be his direct daughter who handles his belongings.”
“I’m a male heir of the Wu family…” Wu Xiaoguang stubbornly clung to his logic.
The old lady said, “This is a new society now. Sons and daughters are the primary heirs. What use is being a male heir?”
Wu Xiaoguang was left speechless.
The old lady turned to the Red Dragon King and his advisor and said, “The Wu family doesn’t welcome you. Get out.”
The Red Dragon King said nothing, but his advisor spoke up, “Madam, your grandnephew’s transaction with us is witnessed by a contract.”
The old lady saw them produce a paper contract with both Wu Xiaoguang’s signature and a red fingerprint.
Wu Xiaoguang said, “That’s right, Great-aunt. I’ve already sold it.”
Back then, upon receiving the money, Wu Xiaoguang had signed it after only a quick glance, seeing the large sum and ignoring any potential pitfalls.
“If you back out now, you’ll have to pay us three times the deposit. Madam, if you can’t afford it, then your grandnephew will have to go to jail.”
Hearing this threat, Xu Youyou thought the old lady might compromise. But to her surprise, a decisive look flashed in the old lady’s eyes as she said, “This is between you and him. I won’t intervene.”
Wu Xiaoguang panicked, “Great-aunt, you’re just going to watch me fall into a pit?”
The old lady said, “Better you fall than keep causing trouble outside.”
She glanced at Xu Youyou, puzzled by how she seemed distracted at such a critical moment, sometimes even playing with her phone.
Neither the Red Dragon King nor his advisor had expected the kindly looking old lady to be so ruthless. The advisor said, “Madam, you can surely tell that we’re not exactly lawful people. He’s the only male heir of your Wu family. Are you really willing to watch him die in prison?”
The old lady replied, “What’s the difference between him now and being dead? He’s just a curse on the family.”
Everyone fell silent.
Suddenly, Wu Xiaoguang bolted for the exit, thinking he could just run away with the money and hide.
But the moment he moved, a large hand grabbed him tightly. “You’re not done yet. Where do you think you’re going?”
Wu Xiaoguang’s face twisted in misery. “Fine… Fine, I’ll return the money to you…”
The advisor sneered, eyes full of menace. “We don’t want the money. We want the item. Find it now!”
Just then, a crisp female voice rang out.
“Is everyone here an outlaw?” Xu Youyou asked with a smile.
“I remember that economic disputes only carry the risk of being labeled a deadbeat. No one said you go to jail for that.”
Wu Xiaoguang instantly looked relieved.
But the advisor leaned in and whispered coldly, “You think we don’t have other ways to deal with you? Ways that’ll make you wish you were dead?”
Wu Xiaoguang’s face went deathly pale.
Xu Youyou couldn’t hear the whispers, but she could guess it wasn’t anything good. Still smiling, she said, “What’s the point of keeping him? If you couldn’t find it yourselves, what makes you think he can?”
The Red Dragon King and the advisor looked grim. Xu Youyou was right: they’d been stumbling around like headless chickens in the cellar, unable to find the item.
If not for the Red Dragon King sensing something unusual about the place, they wouldn’t have stayed cramped here.
“Xu Youyou, you want to fight me for it again?” the Red Dragon King said stiffly.
Xu Youyou had once feared these people, but after the mysterious death of the Empress (Tianhou), she wasn’t as scared anymore. Facing the Red Dragon King now, she said, “Sir, be reasonable. There’s a first-come, first-served rule. I got here before you.”
But the Red Dragon King wasn’t a reasonable man. “I paid for it.”
Xu Youyou replied, “How did you even know there was treasure here? Did you send people to tail me like you did back on Treasure Island?”
The Red Dragon King’s heart ached at the thought of the treasured compass he lost back then, though he showed no emotion on his face. He said, “Miss Xu, you’re young and naive. You’re not the only one in the world good at finding hidden treasures.”
Xu Youyou couldn’t help but wonder: was the Red Dragon King actually good at treasure hunting too? She had thought he, like the Empress, would stay behind the scenes doing rituals to bring people fortune, not come out and fight for treasures himself.
Xu Youyou raised her voice, “Finders keepers. The treasure is right here. Can you get it?”
The Red Dragon King’s face turned ugly. He had dug all over the cellar but still couldn’t find it.
The old lady chuckled, “If you’re useless, stop hogging the spot.”
Even though the Red Dragon King looked even worse, he didn’t leave. Instead, he stared at Xu Youyou and the old lady and asked, “Can you find it?”
Xu Youyou gave Xu Fang a look. Her all-purpose assistant somehow produced two chairs.
“Madam, it’s a long wait. Please, have a seat,” Xu Youyou said.
The Red Dragon King frowned deeply. “What are you waiting for?”
Ever since they barged in, all they had done was argue. The Red Dragon King’s shovel had long since stopped. He couldn’t help but feel something was off.
Xu Youyou said, “I’m waiting for you to dig up the treasure.”
