Chapter 235: Bad Luck
Xu Youyou didn’t know much about cold weapons. Aside from a few famous historical blades, she was unfamiliar with the rest, and she couldn’t even identify the specific type of this dagger.
The system took five minutes to respond: [Do not touch it.]
Xu Youyou had just been playing with it for a while, but upon hearing the system’s warning, she quickly put the dagger back in its original box.
“What happens if I touch it?” Xu Youyou asked. The system’s voice was still emotionless: [Nothing will happen.]

But Xu Youyou really didn’t dare stay too close to the dagger. She called her bodyguard into the room. “You hold this, and let’s go back.”
On the way, she witnessed how dangerous this item could be. Despite the fact that all the cars they were supposed to travel in were fine before departure, the car carrying her and the bodyguard with the dagger suddenly broke down on the road.
Xu Fang quickly contacted a mechanic, but the mechanic encountered a car accident on the way and couldn’t make it in time.
Lu Jingyao noticed that Xu Youyou seemed unwilling to stay outside any longer, so he arranged for another car to pick them up.
Strangely, when the car arrived, it had a flat tire as soon as it reached them.
“What’s going on today? It feels like all the cars are misbehaving,” Xu Fang muttered quietly.
Xu Youyou rubbed her nose, deliberately avoiding eye contact.
Lu Jingyao quickly arranged another car. After contacting five different vehicles, they finally managed to get one that safely stopped in front of them.
However, this car also broke down after driving less than a kilometer.
The driver got out to inspect the situation and helplessly said, “Mr. Lu, someone must have thrown nails on the road. The tire is punctured. I’ll take you and Miss Xu back to the hotel first, then come back to fix the tire.”
Lu Jingyao nodded.
But the car started again, only to wobble down the road before being stopped by traffic police.
“Sir, please show your driver’s license. Someone reported you for drunk driving,” the traffic officer politely said.
The driver felt wronged and cooperated with the alcohol test, repeatedly explaining, “The car just broke down. I was coming to pick up the boss. How could I have been drinking?”
Although the police officer was willing to let them go, he still advised, “Sir, it’s best to call someone to fix the car.”
After experiencing so many strange events, Xu Youyou finally gave up on trying to take a car to her destination. She was afraid that if she kept riding in cars, she’d end up in a real accident.
She checked the map’s displayed distance and said to Lu Jingyao, “How about we walk back? It’s only five kilometers.”
Lu Jingyao looked at Xu Youyou’s sneakers and nodded, saying, “If you’re tired, we can take a break. Don’t push yourself too hard. If it really gets tough, we can even take a bike.”
Xu Youyou wasn’t keen to try any more cars. She glanced at the bodyguard holding the small box and noticed a shop by the roadside selling suitcases. She decided to buy one and had the bodyguard put the small box inside.
She wasn’t sure if she or the bodyguard had attracted more misfortune, but she hoped that the more layers of protection, the farther they’d be from bad luck.
The walk was far from smooth. Xu Youyou’s shoelaces came undone, and she nearly tripped. Then, she almost stumbled into a large pothole.
Fortunately, Lu Jingyao kept holding her hand, pulling her back from the brink of injury several times.
“If it gets too difficult, we can go to a temple and pray tomorrow,” Lu Jingyao suggested, sensing Xu Youyou’s unusual state.
Xu Youyou nodded vigorously. “We’ll go first thing tomorrow!”
As they spoke, Xu Youyou wasn’t paying attention and nearly tripped on a raised step.
Lu Jingyao reacted quickly and caught her. “Walk slowly. There’s no rush.”
Xu Youyou was about to nod, but then she felt a sudden chill on her forehead. Looking up, she saw that the clear sky from before had suddenly turned dark, and large raindrops were rapidly falling on her.
“Seriously? This is how it’s going to be?” Xu Youyou complained.
Suddenly, a small umbrella appeared above her head.
It was Liu, the assistant. Apparently, he had tied a portable umbrella to his leg, and at the crucial moment, he reliably handed it to his boss, allowing Lu Jingyao to show his strong protective side.
Xu Youyou couldn’t help but think that if it weren’t for Liu, Lu Jingyao might still be single.
With two bosses sharing one umbrella, the others, who weren’t as unlucky, either found nearby cover or rushed into the nearest store to return with an armful of umbrellas.
The five-kilometer walk took them two hours. By the time they reached their destination, everyone was exhausted and starving, feeling like they could eat an entire cow.
“Cough, cough, cough!”
Even dinner didn’t go smoothly. Xu Youyou ate too quickly and got a green bean stuck in her throat. If it weren’t for Lu Jingyao’s quick thinking and first aid, she might have choked to death on a single bean.
Finally, after finishing the meal, Xu Youyou, feeling exhausted and seeking some safety, discreetly asked Lu Jingyao after sending everyone else away, “Tonight… could you… stay with me?”
This was Xu Youyou’s plan after much thought. Initially, she had planned for Xu Fang, another woman, to accompany her. However, on the way back, a few times when Xu Fang stood next to her, she was too slow to help. On the other hand, Lu Jingyao’s hand was much quicker.
Xu Youyou didn’t blame Xu Fang. Instead, she felt that maybe it was just Lu Jingyao’s luck that was stronger.
For her personal safety, she wanted to ride Lu Jingyao’s good fortune.
Lu Jingyao, upon hearing this, turned red instantly, avoiding eye contact with Xu Youyou. After a long struggle, he finally made up his mind.
“This… this isn’t appropriate. It might affect your reputation,” Lu Jingyao said softly.
Xu Youyou quickly realized that he misunderstood, and hurriedly explained, “I’m worried I might run into trouble alone. I’ve been unusually unlucky today, as if Xiao Lvmao’s bad luck has transferred to me.”
Lu Jingyao’s bashfulness disappeared, and his expression became serious. He cleared his throat, seemingly trying to cover up, and said, “I misunderstood. I will stay with you.”
