Chapter 164: I’m So Jealous
Xu Youyou couldn’t make sense of it for the time being, so she decided to stop thinking about it for now.
Anyway, Guai Guai wouldn’t lie to her. Since it said there was the smell of a corpse in the stairwell, then there was definitely something hidden in the villa.
The real estate transaction had already been completed, with the hefty sum for the house now in the escrow account. The Gu family’s money was also gone, but Xu Youyou hadn’t forgotten about the diligent female agent in front of her. She pointed at the villa they were in and told the agent, “I’ll take this one.”
The agent’s face immediately lit up with joy.
Xu Youyou didn’t waste any more time with unnecessary words. She urged Xu Fang to drive to the police station in the jurisdiction of the villa they had just visited.
The police were surprised when they received her report. The incident had happened half a year ago, and they still remembered the heart-wrenching grief of the female owner’s father. The police and the city’s criminal investigation team had thoroughly investigated the case multiple times, treating it with great importance, but ultimately concluded it as an accidental fall into the sea.
“Miss Xu, you’re saying that you originally wanted to buy the villa, but when you were in the stairwell, you smelled a strong odor of decay and suspect there’s a body hidden inside?” one of the officers asked.
Xu Youyou nodded gently.
The two police officers exchanged a glance before looking down at the case file in their hands. The file clearly stated that the police had searched the entire villa, including the stairwell, but found no unusual clues about the female owner.
Without concrete evidence, and only based on a subjective smell of decay, they couldn’t reopen the case.
Xu Youyou looked at their troubled expressions and said, “The smell of decay may not be from the female owner’s body. It could be someone else who died there later.”
The two officers immediately became more serious. They suddenly realized they had been too focused on past history and had failed to consider the present situation properly.
Moreover, they also felt something was off about the female owner’s accident half a year ago. She frequently went out to sea, so it seemed unlikely that she would be so careless. But the case had always been about the evidence, and the surveillance footage was too clear, making the case seem too simple.
Soon, the police obtained a search warrant, and Xu Youyou didn’t leave. Instead, she followed them, accompanied by her bodyguards, to the villa.
Coincidentally, the villa was quite lively at that moment.
Mrs. Gu, along with her daughter, was overseeing the cleaning of the entire villa by the housekeeping staff.
Originally, Mrs. Gu had planned to demolish the entire villa and redo the decor according to Gu Xueying’s preferences. However, since the cost of buying the villa had far exceeded expectations, she decided not to bother with renovations and simply had the house cleaned.
“Although the decor is a bit outdated, you can tell that they used good materials. You can just buy a few pieces of furniture according to your taste,” Mrs. Gu said dismissively, trying to comfort her daughter.
Gu Xueying didn’t dare to show her dissatisfaction. Instead, she dutifully played the role of the good daughter. “Mom, when I was separating from my sister today, she looked at me strangely. Is she angry? Does she think we shouldn’t have bought the villa? Maybe I should just transfer it to her?”
Mrs. Gu immediately responded, “Her anger is her problem. What your father and I gave you is yours. Don’t pay attention to those rumors. Some people are stubborn and don’t want to be the Gu family’s daughter. In the future, she’ll regret it.”
Gu Xueying always knew how to please her mother. She smiled and said, “Mom, no matter what others think, in my heart, being your daughter is the happiest thing in the world.”
Mrs. Gu was once again charmed by her daughter’s words, smiling broadly as she reached out to pat her daughter’s head. “You’re the one I love the most, darling. I’m afraid one day someone strange will show up and try to steal my daughter. You can’t just run off with anyone.”
Ever since learning that Xu Youyou grew up in an orphanage, Gu Xueying had never considered looking for her biological parents. She naturally believed that her biological parents couldn’t be from a wealthy family.
Parents without money, acknowledging them was not even worth it.
While mother and daughter were chatting affectionately, the doorbell rang, signaling someone was at the door. The closest housekeeper went to open it and saw two uniformed police officers.
“Police? What are they here for?” Mrs. Gu frowned and asked.
“Ma’am, they have a search warrant. It wouldn’t be right to keep them outside,” the housekeeper replied in a low voice.
Mrs. Gu nodded casually. “Let them in then. Go prepare some tea.”
Mrs. Gu was ready to entertain the officers, but when she saw Xu Youyou standing behind them, her expression turned strange. “What are you doing here again? This house doesn’t welcome you!”
The police officers, initially thinking it was just a routine case, were taken aback when they saw Mrs. Gu’s defensive expression. One of them asked, “Are you Mr. Sun’s second wife?”
The officers didn’t recognize Mrs. Gu but were the same ones who had handled the case six months ago. They assumed the female owner’s husband had remarried because he couldn’t bear loneliness.
Mrs. Gu felt deeply insulted by this question and replied sharply, “Watch your words. Am I some other person’s second wife? This is my first marriage! My husband is Gu Jianming! We simply bought this villa from someone named Sun!”
The officer immediately apologized. “Sorry, I didn’t check the situation properly.”
However, they still didn’t lower their scrutiny. It seemed like they were ready to act the moment they sensed any irregularities from Mrs. Gu.
Xu Youyou observed her and thought to herself that this woman was still the same—always bringing up her first marriage, clearly sensitive about others knowing she was in a second marriage.
The officer explained, “Mrs. Gu, we received a report that there’s a smell of decay coming from the stairwell of your house. This is a search warrant, and we need you to cooperate with our investigation.”
Mrs. Gu became angry. “I just bought this house today. How could there be a smell of decay? Saying such things carries consequences! Don’t you know how much it affects a house if there’s been a crime here?”
Homes that are associated with crimes or ghosts usually sell for much lower prices, so many people prefer to buy those to save money. Of course, some unscrupulous people deliberately hide such information when selling such properties.
The police officers remained serious, saying, “Mrs. Gu, since we’ve received a report, we can’t ignore it. If we check and find nothing, it’ll clear the reputation of your property. We hope you’ll cooperate with us.”
Mrs. Gu turned and glared at Xu Youyou. “It’s you, isn’t it? You’re the one who reported this! You ungrateful thing! You don’t even acknowledge your own parents and now you’re stirring up trouble! You’re just jealous of Yingying!”
Xu Youyou spread her hands. “Yes, yes, I’m so jealous of her. I’m jealous that she has to rely on pleasing you to buy a haunted house!”
