The Best Seat

Chapter 15: The Best Seat

Xu Youyou couldn’t help but turn around, following the voice.

It was Gu Xueying.

She looked slightly younger than the person in Xu Youyou’s memories, and even her methods seemed much more immature.

Xu Youyou had to muster all her self-control, digging her fingernails into her palm until they almost drew blood, to resist the urge to rush over and bite a chunk out of Gu Xueying’s face.

“Big Brother, did I say something wrong? Sister’s gaze looks so scary,” Gu Xueying said weakly.

The moment those words left her mouth, Xu Youyou immediately concealed the hatred in her eyes.

Gu Fengchuan turned his head but only saw a calm and composed Xu Youyou. He felt a bit uneasy but still patted Gu Xueying’s hand and said, “It’s fine. Mom and Dad already said—you are the daughter of the Gu family, so you don’t need to be afraid of anything.”

Hearing this, Xu Youyou felt nauseous. She realized there was no point wasting her breath on these people. She turned to leave.

But, of course, the siblings blocked her path again.

“Where have you been all these days? Your old landlord refused to tell me where you moved to, and even when I sent people to investigate, we couldn’t find any trace of you,” Gu Fengchuan said, his expression guarded, as if worried she might hit him again.

Xu Youyou glanced at him. “Where else would I be? Obviously, hiding from you.”

Gu Fengchuan looked around and said, “Mom and Dad miss you. Don’t be so stubborn. You’re a girl—why struggle outside when your family can take care of you?”

Hearing this, Xu Youyou rolled her eyes. The Gu family’s “care” was too much—outside, she might lack money, but inside the Gu family, she wouldn’t even have her life intact.

“I’m doing just fine outside. Stop bothering me!” Xu Youyou snapped.

Gu Fengchuan frowned. “I don’t believe you. An orphanage kid who just managed to get a college degree—do you know how bad the job market is right now?”

Their argument had already drawn the attention of nearby guests. People were already curious about Xu Youyou’s identity, and hearing the words “orphanage” only intensified their scrutiny.

Xu Youyou stopped in her tracks. Whenever there was a chance to damage her reputation, Gu Fengchuan never hesitated to speak.

Yet, in her previous life, he had never told anyone that Gu Xueying wasn’t the biological daughter of the Gu family. He would even carefully protect her image when she got a pimple.

It was clear—Gu Fengchuan had never viewed her as anything more than an expendable object to trample on.

“Yes, I’m from an orphanage. So why are you still clinging to me? What relationship do we even have?” Xu Youyou’s voice rose slightly.

“What relationship? You’re a member of the Gu—”

Before Gu Fengchuan could finish, Gu Xueying suddenly let out a soft cry.

“Brother, my head hurts a little,” she said delicately.

Gu Fengchuan immediately turned all his attention to his “sister.”

“Xueying, does it hurt a lot?” He gently supported her and had a staff member bring her warm water.

By the time he settled Gu Xueying down and turned to speak with Xu Youyou, she had already vanished into the auction hall.

“Big Brother, I’m so scared. If people find out I’m not the Gu family’s biological daughter, will they laugh at me?” Gu Xueying asked softly.

Gu Fengchuan immediately patted her hand reassuringly. “Don’t worry—you’ll always be the eldest daughter of the Gu family. No one will ever know the truth. At most, we’ll say you and Xu Youyou are twins, and she was lost as a child and only recently found.”

Hearing this, a dark glint flashed across Gu Xueying’s eyes. “Big Brother, but I look nothing like her. Won’t people suspect me? I feel like ever since she came back, you don’t care about me anymore.”

Gu Fengchuan’s heart ached seeing her so vulnerable. He thought of how she had been cherished by the Gu family since childhood and couldn’t bear to see her suffer.

“You’ll always be my most important sister.”

Gu Xueying lowered her head. “But I don’t even look like you.”

“You do! We look alike enough that anyone can tell we’re siblings,” Gu Fengchuan reassured her, though an odd discomfort flickered through his heart before he pushed it aside.

“I wish I were Mom and Dad’s real daughter. I’d happily switch places with Xu Youyou—I love our family so much,” Gu Xueying murmured wistfully.

“You are their real daughter,” Gu Fengchuan said firmly. “If it comes to it, we’ll tell everyone that Xu Youyou is the adopted one. She’s rude, uncultured, and fights people. Until she learns proper behavior, there’s no need to acknowledge her publicly.”

Gu Xueying hadn’t expected her hints to work so smoothly. She hid her delight and said softly, “Is that really okay? I’m worried Sister might feel hurt…”

“Hurt? With her thick skin? She hasn’t even called home once these past days. She’s probably too busy messing around outside,” Gu Fengchuan said angrily.

Seeing that the situation had turned in her favor, Gu Xueying changed the subject. “I wonder if Mr. Lu will be here today.”

A trace of jealousy flashed in Gu Fengchuan’s eyes. “Why do you keep thinking about Mr. Lu? If I’d known, I wouldn’t have brought you.”

Gu Xueying quickly soothed him. “Big Brother, you know he once helped me. I just want to apologize properly—nothing more.”

He couldn’t stay mad at her. But when they entered the auction hall, his face darkened as his gaze landed on the center seat of the front row—where Xu Youyou was sitting.

“That seat… it’s always been Mr. Lu’s. She must not know, or she wouldn’t dare sit there,” Gu Xueying murmured with a frown.
