Chapter 109: Double Happiness
Song Zhibai watched as the two of them surrounded the little dog, and the dog was willing to be close to both of them. He increasingly felt like an outsider. Seeing that neither of them seemed willing to speak first, Song Zhibai decided to be the one to break the silence.
“Who will the little dog stay with from now on?” Song Zhibai asked.
Xu Youyou had no family and had already considered the little dog as part of her home.
Lu Jingyao glanced at Xu Youyou reassuringly. He had no intention of taking the dog away. Instead, he felt a sense of double happiness—not only had he found Ah Huang, but he also had more opportunities to interact with Xu Youyou.
“Ah Huang,” Lu Jingyao called.
The little dog turned its head as if reluctant to acknowledge that name.
Lu Jingyao then called, “Guai Guai.”
The dog let out a low “woof woof,” as if responding to this name.
“Do you want to stay with me or with Miss Xu?” Lu Jingyao asked gently.
Although he had already guessed the answer, seeing Guai Guai immediately bury itself into Xu Youyou’s arms without even looking back, he couldn’t help but feel like an abandoned old father.
“Ah Huang seems to identify more as Guai Guai. It looks like I’ll have to trouble you to continue taking care of it,” Lu Jingyao said.
Xu Youyou was secretly delighted and replied, “You’re willing to let me keep Guai Guai? I should be thanking you instead.”
Even if Song Zhibai were a fool, he could now see through Lu Jingyao’s plan—letting the dog stay with Xu Youyou meant he could always use it as an excuse to visit her.
Since he couldn’t beat him, he decided to join in.
“Guai Guai is really cute. Miss Xu, can I come over often to play with it?” Song Zhibai asked.
Xu Youyou looked down at the yellow mutt and realized her dog was living out a romantic drama plotline.
“If you’d like, that would be great. Guai Guai also wants to make new friends,” Xu Youyou replied.
A sense of crisis rose in Lu Jingyao’s heart. He patted Guai Guai on the head, wanting to assert his status as the original owner. But in the next second, something that made his blood pressure spike happened.
Guai Guai willingly trotted over to Song Zhibai and snuggled up to him obediently—just because Song Zhibai had given it a tiny dog pendant the size of a baby’s fist.
It was originally a keychain on Song Zhibai’s keys.
“Guai Guai, nice to meet you. Can we be friends?” Song Zhibai was coaxing the dog, but his recently honed acting skills weren’t in vain.
At that moment, he wasn’t treating Guai Guai like a pet but rather like an equal.
Just as children crave to be respected like adults, Guai Guai found this refreshing. It had never been treated this way before.
“Woof woof! He’s a good person! He wants to be my friend! He’s good-looking, and I like him too! I wish he could be my owner as well!” Guai Guai barked at Xu Youyou.
Xu Youyou couldn’t help but tease, “You sure fall in love easily. Just a moment ago, weren’t you turning your back on him?”
“Woof woof! I’m being generous, giving you all a chance to win my favor!” Guai Guai’s eyes gleamed with pride.
Xu Youyou: …
Seeing Song Zhibai take the lead, Lu Jingyao felt a bit down but quickly bit the bullet and followed suit.
“It’s my fault. I almost forgot to buy you a gift after all this time. I haven’t been a good owner,” Lu Jingyao said, full of remorse—but it sounded more like a declaration of ownership.
Song Zhibai casually added, “If you really cared, you wouldn’t have made any mistakes, and you wouldn’t have lost it.”
Lu Jingyao’s face darkened at the reminder of how he had lost Guai Guai.
Seeing the tension between them rise again, Xu Youyou sighed and said, “I’m home safe, you’ve seen the dog, and it’s getting late. You two should go back now—I’m going to take a nap.”
She practically pushed the two of them out the door.
Song Zhibai and Lu Jingyao exchanged a glance, both feeling a bit disgusted with each other. They ended up taking separate elevators down.
—
Two days later, Xu Youyou woke up naturally in the morning.
Aunt Zhang smiled and said, “Miss Xu, I’ve already loaded your luggage into the car. Mr. Lu is waiting for you in the small guest room.”
Xu Youyou nodded casually.
She had planned to leave today for the capital.
Lu Jingyao knew her habits and didn’t rush her.
After washing up, she entered the small guest room and saw Lu Jingyao playing with Guai Guai.
Yesterday, for some reason, Lu Jingyao had gone overboard and had his assistant deliver a whole carload of dog toys.
Now, Guai Guai’s room had turned into a miniature toy mountain. The dog loved carrying toys around, so there were bite-marked toys scattered all over the house.
“Have you eaten breakfast?” Xu Youyou asked casually.
Lu Jingyao shook his head.
“Then let’s eat together,” Xu Youyou suggested.
Lu Jingyao had been waiting for this invitation and immediately agreed.
Seeing his suddenly cheerful expression, Xu Youyou almost felt like she was looking at a big dog wagging its tail frantically—it looked just like Guai Guai.
After breakfast, the two were about to leave, deliberately ignoring Guai Guai, who was scratching its ears anxiously.
Guai Guai couldn’t hold back any longer and barked.
“Woof woof! Both of you are leaving without me?”
“What are you hiding from me?”
“Are you abandoning me again?”
The dog chattered nonstop like a machine gun, accusing them.
Lu Jingyao couldn’t understand dog language, but he could easily guess what Guai Guai was saying. He couldn’t help but laugh.
Xu Youyou laughed along with him.
“Woof woof! What are you two bad guys laughing at? How dare you laugh at me? I—”
Before Guai Guai could finish, it saw Aunt Liu pushing two large suitcases toward them.
Xu Youyou bent down and patted the silly little dog’s head. “We’re going on a long trip. Are you ready, Guai Guai?”
