Chapter 69: Time of Death
Bai Cha stumbled out of the car and even slipped on the icy road, falling heavily to the ground.
The driver jumped out, getting out of the driver’s seat immediately.
“Are you alright, miss? No… don’t be in such a hurry!”
He came forward to help Bai Cha up and brushed the snow off her.
“Let’s go, I’ll help you in…”
Bai Cha looked at him, her eyes full of fragility and helplessness.
The driver was a middle-aged man, pale-faced and dazed, looking as if he had been tired for a long time and had no energy, yet he looked at her with pity.
“Be careful, you fell so hard, it’s heartbreaking,” the driver muttered, helping her inside.
Relevant personnel immediately came up to understand the situation.
“You must be Ms. Gu, right? Please follow me.”
Bai Cha then pushed away the driver’s hand and quickly followed that person.
The driver stood there, silently staring at her back. A faint shadow seemed to envelop him, gradually obscuring his expression until someone patted him.
“Sir, were you with the lady just now?”
The driver came back to his senses and scratched his head.
“No, I’m just the taxi driver who picked her up. I saw her fall, so I helped her in.”
“You’re quite kind. However, we’d prefer that unrelated personnel not linger here.”
The driver immediately smiled and nodded quickly.
“Yes, yes, I’ll leave right away.”
As he walked out, he couldn’t help but murmur to himself.
That’s strange, he wasn’t usually such a busybody. Why did he feel so sorry for that girl just now?
Thinking about his own wife and children, and what it would be like if he were gone, he could suddenly understand.
Sigh, I am indeed kind.
Bai Cha naturally didn’t know about these conversations behind her.
But from the moment she got into the car, she had felt it.
The raincoat man had possessed this driver.
So she had deliberately said those things in the car.
That thought that had been hovering in her mind made her try to probe a little.
“We’ve arrived, but I hope you’re mentally prepared, Ms. Gu.”
Bai Cha saw the body covered with a white cloth.
The white cloth was lifted from the head, revealing a face that was somewhat pale and swollen from being soaked.
The other person’s face was no longer easily recognizable, only vaguely showing that it had been quite old.
The hair was graying.
“Ms. Gu, is this your father?”
Family members always have to identify the body first. Although what they found based on the information should be correct.
Bai Cha thought, how would she know if this was him?
Regardless, she just stood there blankly, silently shedding tears, without saying a word.
The police officers next to her exchanged helpless glances. However, this kind of situation was not uncommon.
“According to our investigation, your father most likely died in a car accident yesterday afternoon when it was raining.”
“Yesterday?” Bai Cha finally moved, looking at the police officer.
“Are you saying he died yesterday?”
The police officer looked at the forensic doctor.
“Preliminary judgment is that the time of death was more than 24 hours ago. The cause of death was suffocation due to his face being submerged in water. A specific determination may require an autopsy. If you agree, you can sign this agreement, and we will conduct an autopsy on your father to determine his true cause of death.”
Bai Cha looked again at the corpse lying there.
If her father had died yesterday, who had called her today? The confusion on her face became even more pronounced.
[Good heavens, could there be another ghost?]
[Unlikely. I suspect the water on the raincoat man yesterday might have been from after the murder?]
[That doesn’t seem impossible]
[But why would he kill Gu Baixue’s father?]
[Why isn’t there this storyline in other streamers’ channels? I haven’t seen anyone else being notified that their father died. This seems to be a separate storyline for this streamer]
“Ms. Gu, please accept our condolences,” the forensic doctor said when Bai Cha didn’t speak.
“Because there were indeed signs of a car accident at the scene. However, it’s uncertain whether it was an accident caused by slippery roads due to rain, or if someone hit your father and fled the scene. It rained yesterday afternoon, and then it snowed all night, so…”
“Where did he die?” Bai Cha interrupted him.
The police officer beside him said, “On the roadside near an abandoned factory outside the suburbs of A City. The terrain there is relatively low, and it floods easily when it rains. The initial assessment is that your father died of suffocation after his face was submerged in water following the car accident. However, we are not yet certain if there were any other fatal injuries on his body.”
“So was it an accident or was he hit by someone?” Bai Cha looked at him with red eyes.
“We are investigating. We also need your cooperation. Please accept our condolences.”
Bai Cha’s lips trembled a few times. She closed her eyes, looking tired and despairing, and nodded.
“You investigate… I will cooperate with everything…”
After speaking, she turned around, looking lost.
The police officer beside her quickly stepped forward to lead the way.
“Please come this way to rest for a bit. We still have some information that we might need to ask you about.”
Bai Cha nodded. She just nodded at whatever he said.
Those who saw this couldn’t help but sigh.
A police officer poured a glass of hot water for Bai Cha.
Bai Cha held it to warm her hands.
The police station had heating, which was much better than the old apartment building she lived in. The house she rented didn’t have heating, and Gu Baixue’s emotions were supposedly quite unstable these past two days, so how could she have thought of turning on the air conditioner?
So Bai Cha could only endure it.
This was also why she went to the company.
Anyway, it was warmer anywhere than in that house.
“Ms. Gu, please state your name.”
Upon hearing this, Bai Cha took a sip of hot water, clearing her throat, and regaining a bit of her voice.
“Gu Baixue.”
“Date of birth?”
“December 28, 1997.”
The police officer was slightly taken aback. Today was December 28th.
Clearly, Bai Cha also realized this, and tears welled up in her eyes again.
The policewoman beside her immediately comforted her, patting Bai Cha’s shoulder.
Bai Cha leaned against her.
She was really exhausted.
“Please provide your current address, as well as your family’s address. Where did your father live?”
Bai Cha closed her eyes and shook her head.
“I currently live at 701, Unit 2, Building 6, Rongan Community. As for my father…”
She opened her eyes, looking lost. “Why would he come to A City?”
She didn’t know the specific address of Gu Baixue’s home, but she knew they were from C City in the same province.
So logically, Gu Baixue’s father should also be in C City.
The police officer was also taken aback by the question.
“Uh… we investigated the deceased’s surroundings. He was currently working at a construction site in A City. We have already sent someone to contact them.”
After speaking, the officer looked at her with some confusion.
“Didn’t you know?”
Bai Cha shook her head, breaking down.
“I don’t know, I… I…”
She spoke intermittently, incoherently recounting the conflict between her and her father.
“We haven’t seen each other for many years. I never paid him any attention… I… I hated him, but…”
This remark elicited another sigh.
“He really died yesterday afternoon?” Bai Cha suddenly stopped crying and grabbed the hand of the police officer who was taking notes.
“Then why did he call me this noon?”
As soon as she finished speaking, a chill filled the air.
