Chapter 140: Heading for the Interview
Bai Cha found herself sitting in a classroom, working through a test paper.
Her surroundings were so quiet that the only audible sounds were the scratching of pens and the rustling of turning pages.
Bai Cha was writing out her answers as well.
As she wrote, a drop of blood fell onto her paper.
Subconsciously, Bai Cha raised her head.
A person was sprawled against the ceiling, fresh blood dripping down continuously.
Bai Cha struggled to wake up, but she soon drifted back into a heavy slumber.
The dream shifted.
She was walking through a dark apartment building, a figure standing motionless up ahead.
Flashed and vanished in a heartbeat.
Her heart hammered against her ribs as she bolted home.
Ding-dong—
Her phone received a new email.
She knew what it was, yet she couldn’t stop herself from tapping it open.
It was her—it was her face, yet it wasn’t her.
Bai Cha woke up from her sleep once again.
She tried her best to force herself fully conscious.
Unfortunately, due to her physical condition—or perhaps the peculiar nature of these dreams—she succumbed to deep sleep yet again.
This time, she was inside a room, and a new game had suddenly appeared on her phone.
It couldn’t quite be called a game; it was more like a CG animation.
Row upon row of soaring skyscrapers, with a figure leaping off the top of one.
And then, she wobbled back to her feet, dragging herself closer to the screen.
Step by step.
Step by step.
Whoosh! A face smeared with blood pressed right up against the screen.
Through her fright, Bai Cha caught a clear look at the face—it was still her own.
This time, she finally woke up for real.
She had slept for a very long time; it was already evening.
Li Mengyao had sent her a message:
“My defense is over! Headed off to the company now. Get some rest! I’ll be back tonight to pack my things, let me know what you want to eat!”
Bai Cha dazed for a moment, realizing that she ought to start packing her things too, given that graduation was around the corner.
While messaging Li Mengyao back to say she had already eaten and had only just checked her phone, she cast a glance at Yu Zhenzhen’s wooden box.
After a moment’s thought, she got up, washed her face, and headed out with the box in hand.
A junior girl living in a dorm downstairs seemed to have a toolbox—she belonged to the school’s robotics club. Bai Cha had chatted with them before during the school sports meet when they sat beside her.
At the time, one of the girls had complained of a stomachache. Bai Cha pressed her abdomen and felt it didn’t seem like a stomach issue, advising her to go to the hospital to check her appendix.
Sure enough, it turned out to be appendicitis. The girl had later sent her some snacks and added her as a friend.
Though they didn’t chat much, Bai Cha could see from her social media posts that the girl owned a fairly complete set of tools.
Knocking on the door downstairs, she explained her purpose.
“Oh, sure! I have pliers. Come on in.”
The lock on Yu Zhenzhen’s box was very ordinary and small, popping open with ease.
Bai Cha expressed her gratitude: “Thank you so much. I’ll take my leave now.”
“You’re welcome! Take care, Senior!”
As Bai Cha was leaving, she could still hear the girls sighing in admiration behind her.
“Senior is so pretty, just a bit pale and sickly. Otherwise, she’d be drop-dead gorgeous.”
“You call her Senior, but she’s actually younger than us! Still, she’s so gentle—I didn’t even dare raise my voice when talking to her.”
“Exactly, exactly!”
Accustomed to hearing such remarks, Bai Cha didn’t feel much about it.
Returning to her dorm, Bai Cha opened the box.
Inside lay an A5 notebook, along with a few small paper boxes and photos.
Many of the photos were group shots with family, but the spot where Yu Zhenzhen should have been was now blank, giving off a bizarre feel.
The paper boxes contained some cheap hair clips and the like.
Flipping open the notebook, the pages were entirely blank.
Only in a sparse few places were there a handful of words scribbled down:
Sad, Why, Scared, So painful…
Perhaps this notebook was a diary, but everything else was gone.
Why were only these few words left behind?
And as for those items—every trace of her belongings had vanished, yet these managed to remain…
Placing the box back onto the table, Bai Cha rubbed her knees. Every time her period arrived, her knees ached with a deep, piercing cold, and everything below her knees felt icy.
The new game instance had been updated in her system.
Passing the Imperial Examination with Flying Colors.
Eighty percent chance it had something to do with the college entrance exams.
Bai Cha pondered thoughtfully. Should she let Xu Shengsheng take this instance?
To build up her ability to handle pressure.
However, Xu Shengsheng hadn’t experienced any dreams yet. If several days passed without any, her situation was likely just like that of a regular player.
Bai Cha poured herself a glass of hot water and lay back down in bed.
She had no appetite and didn’t feel like eating, even though she knew it wasn’t good for her.
However, people always felt like slacking off sometimes.
Sleeping was good for the body too, so skipping meals today wouldn’t hurt.
Bai Cha drifted off to sleep again.
No game-related dreams this time, just her usual restless sleep.
At seven in the morning, Bai Cha woke up right on time.
She felt much better today, her fever having broken.
Thinking of her interview today, Bai Cha applied light makeup, mainly touching up her complexion to make herself look much more spirited.
After all, her self-evaluation on her resume explicitly read [Upbeat & Positive] and [Cheerful Personality].
Stepping out, she grabbed breakfast at a restaurant before boarding a ride, arriving at Youyi Game Technology Co., Ltd. at nine-thirty.
The company name sounded quite youthful.
She didn’t know if she would get to meet Shen Qingchen.
The receptionist checked her name, had her fill out another copy of her resume for registration, and asked her to wait to the side.
She would be called once the previous interviewee stepped out.
From the looks of it, the company environment was pretty good. The entire floor of the office building belonged to this company, spanning a generous amount of space.
Bai Cha didn’t wait long.
Entering the room, as expected, the interviewer wasn’t Shen Qingchen.
Bai Cha carried herself with poise and grace, her professional knowledge undeniably solid, leaving the interviewer thoroughly impressed.
“One final question: Why did you choose our company?”
“Because of Shen Qingchen,” Bai Cha stated directly.
The interviewer startled slightly.
“You know Sister Shen?”
“I don’t, but I would like to.”
A subtle, odd look crossed the interviewer’s face for a brief second.
If the person sitting in front of her weren’t a young girl, she would genuinely suspect this was another suitor trying to chase after her boss.
Has Sister Shen’s charm really reached this level?
Though she thought this internally, she nodded outwardly.
“Alright, that’s all the questions I have on my end. Do you have any questions for us?”
Bai Cha had already asked everything that needed asking during the interview.
This company didn’t provide room and board, but offered allowances—housing subsidy plus meal allowance added up to eight hundred yuan in total.
The internship salary was 4,000 yuan, raising to 6,000 yuan upon official employment, with full social security and housing fund benefits provided.
Of course, interview descriptions usually painted the conditions in a favorable light, but her original purpose was simply to make contact with Shen Qingchen anyway.
As long as it wasn’t a shared name, the Number One player on the leaderboard was worth a dedicated trip.
“I have no more questions.”
“Alright then, you may head back for now. We will notify you of the results.”
Bai Cha nodded.
Just as she reached the door, she saw a tall woman with burgundy curly hair, wearing a black square-neck camisole dress, black stiletto heels, and sunglasses, stepping right through the entrance.
The woman possessed fair skin—a healthy, translucent pale tone—with a well-proportioned figure. Though her eyes were concealed, her exposed facial features carried a striking, dignified charm.
Her aura was immensely powerful.
Bai Cha reached the doorway at almost the exact same time as her.
The woman flashed her a faint smile before striding into the company.
Bai Cha heard the receptionist call her “Sister Shen.”
So that was Shen Qingchen?
Bai Cha withdrew her gaze and took her leave.
As Shen Qingchen walked into the company, the HR interviewer who had just finished the interview happened to step out.
Recalling the young girl from a moment ago, Shen Qingchen removed her sunglasses, revealing a pair of captivating peach-blossom eyes as she asked, “Was that girl just now here for an interview?”
