Chapter 210: Prepare a Wedding Gift for That Guy Zhong
Gu Mingchi: “…If you say one more word, I swear I’ll kill you.”
Zhong Gaoyi immediately shut up, but then he remembered he was in Taoyang, far from any authority, so there was no need to be intimidated. Acting as if he hadn’t heard the threat, he continued earnestly:
“Boss Gu, sure, I could go back and save some people, but I can’t guarantee the safety of all my brothers. Moving to Taoyang wouldn’t just give them a place to settle, it would also ensure they all stay alive.”
He paused for a moment before adding, “And besides, it would give you more time to spend with Boss Su.”
Gu Mingchi sneered, “And that’s supposed to be a benefit?”
Zhong Gaoyi sighed. “Maybe you don’t care, but someone else does. Someone even rented a large plot of land just to be closer to Boss Su…”
Before the man on the other end could explode, Zhong Gaoyi swiftly hung up.
Gu Mingchi was so furious that he was about to storm over to Taoyang to drag him back himself.
His deputy quickly reminded him, “Boss, the caretaker for the old man called this morning, but you missed it. Do you want to call back now?”
Thinking his grandfather might need something, Gu Mingchi instantly forgot half of his anger. “Call him back now.”
As soon as the call connected, the caretaker’s cheerful voice came through:
“Boss Gu, the old man was asking about you this morning.”
Gu Mingchi wasn’t surprised. “Isn’t he always calling me an unfilial son?”
“Not at all! It’s just that Taoyang suddenly got a protective shield, and the temperature dropped a lot. When the old man stepped outside, he asked me if summer was finally ending, if his grandson was coming home soon. He kept saying he missed you.”
Gu Mingchi froze for a moment, his mind drifting back to years ago.
Back then, he was always away at school, while his grandfather stayed in his hometown, a place where the seasons were indistinct—summer faded straight into winter.
Winter meant the holidays were coming, which meant he would be going home.
The caretaker, unaware of his emotions, continued happily,
“Boss, in all these years, I’ve never heard the old man say something like that. Even though his mind is slipping, he still thinks about you.”
Gu Mingchi leaned on the table, his bangs casting a shadow over his eyes. “How long has he been in Taoyang?”
“More than three months now. His health is getting better, and his condition hasn’t worsened. Sometimes, he even suddenly becomes clear-headed and remembers a lot of things from the past.”
Gu Mingchi was surprised. “You’ve been taking good care of him.”
The caretaker quickly clarified, “It’s not just me. Boss Su comes to talk with him often—whenever she has time, really. Mr. Mei, Aunt Cen, and others come by to play chess with him, too. It keeps his mind active. Plus, Taoyang has great living conditions. He eats well, sleeps well, and the people around him are kind. With a good mood, his spirits improved.”
Gu Mingchi was startled. “What does Su Tao even talk to an old man about?”
“All sorts of things. I overheard a bit—mostly, she asks him for advice on management. Sometimes, they just chat about everyday life.”
Gu Mingchi scoffed. “She’s just trying to learn from him.”
The caretaker instinctively defended Su Tao, “I wouldn’t call it that. The old man loves it when she visits. If she doesn’t come for too long, he even tells me to go get her.”
Gu Mingchi was speechless.
Just then, he heard his grandfather’s voice through the phone, “Xiao Lu, come here and see how this outfit looks on me.”
The caretaker responded and then explained, “In a couple of weeks, Dr. Zhong and Manager Zhuang are having their wedding in Taoyang. The old man loves a lively event, so he’s been preparing for the wedding these past few days. Hold on a moment, I’ll go check on him.”
The call remained connected.
Gu Mingchi quietly listened as Xiao Lu helped his grandfather adjust his clothes. The old man, as always, was talkative.
After a while, he suddenly sighed and asked, “Xiao Lu, wasn’t Xiao Zhong working for that kidnapper before?”
Gu Mingchi: “……”
The caretaker, clearly nervous, awkwardly laughed. “Ah… yes, yes, he was.”
The old man nodded in satisfaction. “At least he found his way back. Working for a kidnapper leads nowhere. Living with your life constantly on the line isn’t worth it. It’s better to come back and live a peaceful, steady life in a place like ours.”
The caretaker was so tense his scalp tingled, offering only a couple of vague sounds of agreement.
The old man continued talking to himself,
“People need to be grounded. Look at Xiao Zhong—he figured it out, and now he’s getting married. And to someone close to Taoyang, no less. That’s great! Xiao Lu, tell me, when will my grandson finally come to his senses and come home to live a stable life? He’s always wandering around out there, never coming back. I won’t even scold him for being unfilial anymore—I just want him to come back and see me…”
As he spoke, his voice started trembling, and he unexpectedly burst into tears.
The caretaker scrambled to comfort him.
By the time he picked up the communicator again, the call had already been disconnected.
On the other end, Gu Mingchi’s deputy hesitated before cautiously asking, “Boss, are we still heading to Taoyang to capture Zhong Gaoyi?”
Gu Mingchi was annoyed. “Capture my ass!”
If he forcibly took Zhong Gaoyi away now and ruined the wedding, his grandfather would be the first to beat him with his cane.
The deputy quickly backed away, afraid of further provoking him.
But just as he was about to leave, he was called back again.
“Prepare the car.”
The deputy was stunned. “Boss, where are you going?”
“Taoyang. Hurry up, stop asking stupid questions.”
The deputy pulled a long face. So we’re still going to capture Zhong Gaoyi after all?
Gu Mingchi saw his expression and immediately knew what he was thinking. He kicked him and said,
“I already said we’re not capturing him! I’m going to see my grandfather and bring him some of his favorite food.”
The deputy nodded and was about to leave when Gu Mingchi called him back again.
Reluctantly, he muttered, “…And prepare a wedding gift for that guy Zhong.”
