Chapter 314: It Has Nothing to Do With Me!
Ning Xiyue saw that Aunt Wu was hesitant to take it, so she stepped forward and pushed it into her hands.
“This… Dr. Ning, thank you, thank you so much. You see, we really have nothing to give you in return.”
“It’s fine, as long as you accept it.”
Aunt Wu couldn’t refuse such a precious gift — everyone here desperately needed it.
She held tightly to the items Ning Xiyue handed her, her hands trembling uncontrollably. Her voice choked up, and tears filled her eyes.
This was the first warmth she had felt since leaving the classroom, the first time she’d felt such sincere goodwill from others, the first time someone wasn’t afraid of them or disgusted by them — someone who actually cared.
These supplies were life-saving. With Dr. Ning’s help, they might really make it through this hardship.
The others in the shelter also had tears welling in their eyes. Silently, they bowed deeply to Ning Xiyue in gratitude.
Ning Xiyue took a step back and waved her hand. “It’s okay. Don’t think too much about it. As a doctor, I simply don’t want to see anyone sick. Keep these things safe. As for tonight… let’s just pretend nothing happened. None of us knows a thing.”
Thankfully, everyone’s spirits were still strong — their conditions were mostly physical discomfort, nothing too dire. The medicine could help; she could still do something for them.
“Yes, nothing happened tonight.”
Everyone nodded solemnly, promising to keep tonight’s events secret. That was everyone’s unanimous decision.
“Brother, Yechu, Zhiyu, let’s go. It’s time to go back and get some sleep.”
Ning Xiyue brushed back a few loose strands of hair, opened her umbrella, and led the way back toward the direction they’d come from. Ning Qingyuan followed closely behind.
Before leaving, Chen Yechu glanced at the people in the yard, then pulled out a handful of milk candies from her pocket and stuffed them into Aunt Wu’s hands without saying a word. She turned and jogged to catch up with Ning Xiyue.
Yu Zhiyu followed quietly, keeping a two-step distance behind her.
Aunt Wu looked down at the things in her hands and then at the backs of the four figures fading into the distance. She sighed softly.
“They’re all such good kids… Why did my own son have to turn out like that? And I’m supposed to be a teacher — yet I raised such a disappointing child.”
She blinked, hiding the loneliness and sadness in her eyes. When she opened them again, only determination remained — belief that life would get better.
What must be let go, must be let go.
Everything will be fine. Everything will be fine.
“Ding! Detected that Host has completed the mission ‘Helping the Great Ones in Hardship.’ Would Host like to sign in?”
“Sign-in successful! Congratulations, Host, you’ve received:
— A full Russian language learning course
— One foreign-teacher AI robot
— One premium tea set
— One complete calligraphy kit (brush, ink, paper, inkstone, and copybook)
— One business secret manual
— One master-level double-sided Shu embroidery screen.”
Wow, wow, wow! Such generous rewards — this time’s sign-in items were way too many!
“Little System, you must’ve based the rewards on the personalities of those people in the shelter, right? I’m guessing they’ll all play an important role in the future — either in the world or in my own journey. That’s why this sign-in was triggered.”
The little turtle shrank its head silently — the host was getting way too good at guessing.
Ning Xiyue looked happily at the new screen in her backpack — a double-sided embroidery of a round, chubby black-and-white panda that looked so vivid and lifelike.
As a lover of cute things, she couldn’t stop smiling.
Now, the precious drops of Yangzhi nectar, the ginseng whiskers, and the medicines she’d used earlier didn’t feel wasteful at all.
Good deeds really do bring good rewards.
Whether or not those people remembered her kindness didn’t matter. She’d already received the real, tangible benefit on the spot — the rest she could ignore.
As they walked along the road, Ning Qingyuan asked curiously, “Sis, how come you weren’t afraid of them at all? Everyone else keeps their distance, terrified of getting involved. But you even gave them things.”
Yu Zhiyu shared the same doubt. Even Chen Yechu hadn’t seemed afraid — she’d even handed out candy at the end. He admired her kindness, but he worried she might get hurt because of it.
“Brother, it’s not that I wasn’t afraid,” Ning Xiyue explained, “I just knew they weren’t bad people. A few of them are even teachers. Since we already saw their situation, why not lend a hand? We were already in contact anyway — a bit more won’t make a difference. And besides, it’s just the few of us; no one else knows.”
Feeling Yu Zhiyu’s intense gaze, Chen Yechu blushed slightly and said softly, “I think the same way as Xiyue.”
“I just worry about you,” Yu Zhiyu said sincerely, his tone low and gentle. “I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
The softness in his voice sounded almost puppy-like, making Chen Yechu’s ears turn red. She lowered her head shyly. “Mm… I’ll try not to make you worry again.”
Meanwhile, Ning Qingyuan, wanting to remind his sister, put on a stern face and clutched his chest dramatically.
“Next time, don’t be so reckless! Your brother’s heart can’t handle that kind of scare, you hear me, little sis? And don’t get too close to that couple, Bai Yu and his wife — they don’t look like good people. When you get home, write to your fiancé and tell him about this. You can’t just let any so-called ‘relatives’ come looking for you. I seriously suspect she—”
Just then, someone called out to Ning Xiyue.
It was none other than the exact “not good person” Ning Qingyuan had just been badmouthing.
Ning Qingyuan immediately slapped a hand over his own mouth, eyes wide in horror.
Had his mouth been cursed or something? The moment he talked bad about someone behind their back, they appeared right in front of him! Clearly, he needed to stop gossiping in public — better to do it only behind closed doors.
Ning Xiyue, Chen Yechu, and Yu Zhiyu all turned to look at Ning Qingyuan’s face, trying hard not to laugh.
Ning Qingyuan, hand still over his mouth, shook his head innocently.
His expression screamed: “It has nothing to do with me!!”
