Chapter 7: Why Don’t You Just Rob Me
Old Madam Su looked a bit uncomfortable and impatiently said, “Stop with all the nonsense. Hurry up and eat. I have something to say after dinner.”
Su Yongguo and his wife were obedient and immediately bowed their heads to eat. After dinner, Zhao Cui’er got up to clear the dishes, but Su He said, “Mom, you’ve been working hard all day. Let me clean up!”
As soon as she said that, everyone turned to look at her.
Did the sun rise from the west today?
Then they saw Su He tug on the little cowlick on Su Xiaoman’s head. “Clean up the dishes properly, and tomorrow you’ll get a fried egg as a reward.”
Su Xiaoman’s eyes lit up. “Really?”
If Su He had said that before, Su Xiaoman wouldn’t have believed her.
But today, not only had Su He given her a fried egg, she even gave her a pack of sweet cakes—her credibility had skyrocketed.
When Su He nodded, the little girl cheerfully started clearing the table.
Zhao Cui’er tried to get up to help, but Su He smiled and said, “Mom, didn’t Grandma say she has something to tell us? Just let Xiaoman do it!”
Then she turned to Old Madam Su: “Grandma, what did you want to say?”
Old Madam Su: …Why does it feel like this damn girl is running the house now?
She wanted to glare at Su He, but thinking about what she was going to say, she forced out a smile.
“What I’ve got to say is great news! And of course, it’s thanks to the second son—he always thinks of the family. He’s found a top-notch marriage prospect for Su He!
It’s the son of the deputy director of the textile factory…
Su He, you’ll go to the county with your second uncle tomorrow morning for a meeting. If he takes a liking to you, you won’t have to worry for the rest of your life…”
Old Madam Su was practically spitting in excitement. Su He felt like the old woman wished she could be a few decades younger herself to catch this falling pie from the sky.
Zhao Cui’er asked carefully, “Mom, if the guy’s conditions are so good, why would he choose our Su He? Why not find someone in the county?”
Old Madam Su shot her a look. “Isn’t it obvious? Yongshi did a great job talking her up! He praised Su He like she was a blooming flower—of course the other party would be tempted.”
Su Yongshi quickly added, “I just made the introduction. The main reason is Su He is good-looking, plus she came back from the provincial capital—she’s got class.
Big Brother, Sister-in-law, don’t worry. Su He’s my own niece. I’d never harm her. That Zhao Bin—he’s handsome and well-matched with our Su He.
I know you want to keep Su He at home a few more years, but chances like this don’t come around twice. If you miss this village, there’s no next shop.”
Compared to Old Madam Su, Su Yongshi spoke much more convincingly—so much so that even Su Yongguo started wavering.
But Zhao Cui’er still felt uneasy. She didn’t believe pies fell from the sky.
“Second Brother (Su Yongshi), did you check thoroughly? This Zhao Bin—he’s not single just because he’s picky, right? There’s no… problem with him? He hasn’t committed any crimes or anything?”
Before Su Yongshi could reply, Old Madam Su spat angrily: “You troublemaker! What do you mean by that? You think Yongshi would harm his own niece?! I’m the one making the call here. Tomorrow morning, Su He is going to the county with Yongshi!”
She turned to Su He again. “You better dress yourself up properly. Show some charm when you meet him, and don’t go around looking like you’re at a funeral…”
Su He blinked innocently. “Grandma, I’ll listen to you. It’s just, I’m feeling a bit unsure heading out with empty hands. Could you give me a little money? Not much—just a hundred or eighty yuan.”
Old Madam Su nearly fainted on the spot!
A hundred and eighty?! Not much?! Why don’t you just go rob someone?!
“You damn girl—”
Before she could finish, Su He clutched her chest and moaned, “Aiyo, Grandma, my chest hurts… I might not even be able to walk tomorrow, let alone go to the county…”
Old Madam Su: …Is this damn girl threatening her?
What happened to her after she jumped into the river? Why does it feel like she’s a completely different person now? Or had she just been pretending all along, and now she’s finally showing her true colors?
No wonder that woman from the Shen family never liked her. Even raising a cat or dog for eighteen years would bring some feelings—but this damn girl could make people die of rage!
