Chapter 2: Road to Survival 1
Chu Yian looked at him upon hearing this. “Where are those ambulances going?”
“Seems like they’re heading to the High-Speed Rail Station.”
The driver replied casually. At this point, the car hadn’t gone far and had just turned past a traffic light intersection when the road ahead became congested. “Heck, the traffic today is absolutely cursed.”
Chu Yian sat beside him and saw him open a chat group for fellow drivers.
“Shigang Road is jammed today. Is it crowded over by the shopping mall?”
“What a coincidence, I’m stuck in the middle section of the Shopping Mall area.”
“The High-Speed Rail Station and the Long-Distance Bus Station have just been sealed off. I heard there’s a violent brawl involving stabbings and bitings. Don’t go there.”
“A brawl broke out at the Shopping Mall too; apparently, it spread from the High-Speed Rail Station. Damn, I just saw someone’s intestines get gouged out. It’s terrifying. You guys better stay away…”
The messages in the WeChat group silenced the three people chatting in the back.
“A brawl at the Shopping Mall?”
Everyone’s first reaction was to scroll through social media platforms, and Chu Yian also searched for news. Meanwhile, police motorcycles continuously wove through the gaps between cars toward the front. The situation looked serious.
“Maybe we shouldn’t go after all.”
The slightly chubby roommate already wanted to back out, but they were trapped on the road, surrounded by cars.
“Beep—!”
“Beep beep beep—!”
A chorus of horns from the cars ahead blared, and many people ran toward them screaming. Panic was written on every face, yet there was no sign of the police.
“Holy crap, what’s happening?”
The driver unbuckled his seatbelt and got out to check, while Chu Yian leaned her head out of the window.
All those people were running away from the Shopping Mall, indicating that something bad had happened ahead. Connecting it to what she heard from the driver’s phone… A riot? Or terrorists?
“Hey, let’s go.”
She suddenly got out of the car and called out to her three roommates.
Her three random roommates didn’t move. They looked conflicted, clearly preferring to stay in the car.
“It’s only about two or three kilometers from the school. It might be faster to run back. school is definitely safer than being inside a car.”
Chu Yian crouched to tighten her shoelaces as she explained.
As the saying goes, ‘a wise person does not stand under a crumbling wall.’ If they didn’t follow, she would run on her own.
“Bang—!”
A deafening explosion rang out from ahead. Several cars were flipped by the shockwave, and even more people came rushing around the corner toward them. Some among them were acting extremely violently, chasing and attacking others and vehicles.
“What are you standing there for? Run!”
A man running from the front shouted at Chu Yian, which finally helped her make up her mind.
Chu Yian ignored the three in the car and followed behind him, running toward the school. However, before the man could go far, he collapsed heavily onto a nearby car.
Chu Yian was about to help when a couple nearby beat her to it and supported him. A chunk of flesh had been bitten off the man’s arm, and blood soaked his entire sleeve.
“Oh my god!”
The woman took a deep breath and said to her husband, “He needs to go to the Hospital!”
Just as they took out their phones to call the police, the middle-aged man suddenly began to convulse. The next second, he lunged at the woman’s husband.
Tearing and gnawing!
The man who had kindly told her to escape just moments ago now seemed like a completely different person, sending a cold sweat down Chu Yian’s back as she stood only a few steps away.
“Yi… Yian!”
Someone called her from behind; it was her three random roommates who had caught up.
“Go, quickly!”
Sensing that something was terribly wrong, Chu Yian’s lips trembled as she spoke. She forced herself not to rush forward to pull them away, bypassed the three people scuffling together, and continued running toward the school.
On the other side.
The driver, who hadn’t left, sat back in the car. Just as he closed the doors and windows, a hideous freak with saliva dripping from his mouth charged out of the crowd and slammed violently against the windshield.
At the same moment, a shrill city alarm suddenly blared.
The couple from before climbed up from the ground and lunged at the nearest person with extremely bizarre movements.
People fleeing for their lives were crowding against each other.
Vehicles that could still move were rampaging through the streets.
Everyone around was going crazy!
Chu Yian dodged a car that almost hit her, leaped over a hood, and ran for her life.
“Bang!”
The sound of a car collision rang out behind her. “Yian!”
One of the roommates following her had been hit. She was pinned between the car and a wall, her head striking the wall and bleeding bright red blood.
Inside the red car that hit her, the person had a large chunk of fresh red flesh hanging from his neck, exposing the white bones of his gums and jaw. His pupils were only the size of mung beans, and his teeth were gnashing at a high frequency as he slammed his head violently against the glass.
In a few hits, the glass shattered. The person inside roared and bit at the roommate who had been hit. Meanwhile, the last roommate was on the other side of the car, screaming with her legs weak from terror.
There was no way to save her.
Chu Yian grabbed the roommate closest to her and continued to sprint.
Right now, there were crazed people everywhere in front of and behind them. Chu Yian didn’t dare to look around, keeping her eyes fixed on the school gate five hundred meters ahead.
Security guards were stationed at the gate with walkie-talkies, and the electronic gate had already begun to slowly close.
At the last moment, Chu Yian sprinted to the gate dragging her only remaining roommate and shouted at the guards blocking the way, “Students! We’re students of this school!”
They were finally inside.
Chu Yian crouched down, gasping for air, her gaze fixed on the gate.
The security guards were using riot shields and steel forks to block those trying to get in. She saw one of the guards get bitten by a madman.
Outside the gate, madmen and normal people were all mixed together.
And at the wall just a few steps from the gate, the fence design couldn’t stop anyone at all. Many people fleeing for their lives climbed the fence and flipped inside from the outside.
This place wasn’t safe either.
She reached out to pull her only remaining roommate toward the Dormitory Building. On the way, there were many students and teachers standing still, watching the commotion.
“Run! Run, quickly!”
Chu Yian didn’t dare look back. At this point, the distance from the school gate to their Dormitory Building was a ten-minute run.
Why did the school have to be built so big!
This was the first time she had ever complained about the school being too large.
At the school gate, madmen were biting normal people at will. The sounds of car collisions, explosions, screams, and alarms never ceased. In the teaching building up front, windows were filled with students looking out at the gate and the road.
Chu Yian watched as people continuously climbed over the railings into the school. A security guard lunged at his colleague to bite him. The school gate was forced open by the crowd, and a large wave of people moving strangely let out roars as they sprinted toward the teaching building. Any pedestrians on the road who ran just a little too slowly were tackled by packs of madmen.
Amidst the city alarms, the school’s broadcast system rang out…
