Chapter 79: What Is She?
Realizing this, Lin Huai actually started to laugh. “Master Cloud Cliff makes it sound so easy, telling me to let go of my grudges. But what about you? If you could truly let go of your own desires, you wouldn’t be standing here today!”
Her voice turned sharp and mocking. “Aren’t you all ambushing me here simply for that coffin of mine?”
She swept her gaze across the men. “Unfortunately, I didn’t bring the coffin into this instance. It looks like your grand plan is going to fail. If I die here today, none of you will ever find it!”
Dragon Crossing the River took a heavy step forward, his voice rough and menacing. “You bitch, are you trying to play games with us? Hand over the coffin obediently, and maybe my brother and I will give you a quick, clean death. Otherwise…”
Lin Huai’s eyes turned to ice. “Otherwise, what can you do to me? You’re barely Rank 4. Do you really think you’re that impressive?”
Tiger Suppressing the Mountain ground his teeth and stepped forward beside his brother, his multi-barrel rotary machine gun spinning up with a menacing whine before unleashing a deafening spray of lead. “Otherwise, we’ll make you suffer until you beg for death! I have plenty of ways to break women like you!”
Lin Huai stood completely still atop the vehicle’s roof. With a slight flick of her left wrist, another Iron Wall Talisman shot out, forming a golden shield that caught every incoming bullet without a scratch.
“Once a move is made, there’s no turning back,” she said coldly. “Since you want a fight, I only hope you don’t regret it when you take your last breath!”
Before her sentence finished, a massive astral greatsword materialized out of thin air directly above Tiger Suppressing the Mountain’s head and crashed downward like a falling mountain!
Dragon Crossing the River reacted swiftly, yanking his brother backward to dodge. He raised his massive war axe to parry the strike, producing an ear-splitting metallic clang. Having missed its mark, the greatsword shrank instantly and flew back into Lin Huai’s grasp.
Tiger Suppressing the Mountain gasped for breath, his face pale from the brush with death. Beside him, Dragon Crossing the River glared at Lin Huai with murderous rage. “You damn bitch, I’m going to chop you to pieces!”
He hurled his great axe forward with terrifying force, sending the heavy blade spinning straight toward Lin Huai’s neck!
Yet halfway through the air, the spinning axe slammed into a rotten corpse leaping up from the sand. The body was sliced cleanly in two, thudding into the dirt. Sitting atop his high rock, Old Demon of Xiangxi tapped the ash from his cigarette. His raspy voice carried across the canyon: “I already told you—if she dies now, you’ll never find the coffin. Let’s find out where she hid it first.”
Chen Feng tucked away his arrogant smirk, putting on a sickening, fake smile instead. Tapping open his system menu, he called in a survivor who had been waiting outside the perimeter.
“I’ll bring Su Wan in so you two can catch up,” Chen Feng said casually. “There have been a few misunderstandings between us. Let’s talk them out face-to-face, shall we?”
Lin Huai sneered, giving a faint nod. “Fine by me.”
Killing them all in the same place would save her plenty of time.
Moments later, a woman walked past the shimmering edge of the barrier. She moved with an anxious, delicate sway, her pretty eyes carrying a naturally alluring gaze. Dragon Crossing the River’s eyes swept over her body from head to toe, filled with undisguised lust.
Frightened by the two heavily tattooed brothers, Su Wan hurried past them, rushing straight to Chen Feng’s side. “Brother Feng, did you secure the coffin?”
Lin Huai had kept her eyes fixed on Su Wan from the moment she entered. Yet Su Wan only gave Lin Huai a passing glance before ignoring her entirely, showing not a flicker of recognition.
Su Wan had not retained her memories. She was not a reincarnator.
Chen Feng pointed toward the roof of the hearse, speaking gently to Su Wan: “Wan’er, be a good girl and go talk to this lady. Ask her where she hid the coffin.”
Lin Huai scoffed with utter disdain. “Chen Feng, do you really think I’ll answer just because she asks? What is she to me?”
Su Wan seemed not to notice the harsh sarcasm. She walked directly toward the armored hearse, tilting her chin up to look at Lin Huai on the roof. In a soft, gentle voice, she asked, “My name is Su Wan. I just wanted to ask… where did you put your coffin…?”
As she spoke, a strange, hypnotic light suddenly pulsed within her pupils.
Lin Huai instinctively squeezed her eyes shut to look away, but a wave of dizzying fog still crashed against her mind. An invisible, compelling pressure gripped her thoughts, trying to force the truth from her lips.
Right at that critical second, Old Hei’s voice exploded inside her head like a crack of thunder:
[Idiot! Wake up!]
The fog in her mind vanished instantly, and Lin Huai snapped back to full awareness. Her cold eyes locked straight onto Su Wan below.
A look of pure terror washed over Su Wan’s face. What went wrong? My charm ability has never failed before! Why didn’t it work on this woman?!
Her mind-control skill had a harsh restriction: it could only be used once per target. Seeing that Lin Huai was completely unaffected, Su Wan panicked and turned to flee. “Brother Feng, save me! She resisted it—”
Before the plea could leave her throat, a dark, gleaming crescent blade ripped through her chest from behind.
Su Wan’s voice died in her throat. She hung motionless on the tip of Lin Huai’s long war scythe like a tattered rag, her eyes frozen wide in shock as life drained away.
A sudden wave of clarity washed over Lin Huai. “So that was it all along. Su Wan had a mental control skill. No wonder…”
Every inexplicable puzzle from her previous life finally fell into place. Her only regret was that she had uncovered the truth so late.
Yet whether in the past or the present, Su Wan had always been nothing more than an obedient tool for Chen Feng to manipulate others. It was Chen Feng who had betrayed her trust, and it was Chen Feng who had ended her life. Lin Huai felt no burning personal hatred toward Su Wan. Once the woman went limp, Lin Huai flicked her scythe and let the body drop into the sand, not sparing it a second glance.
Su Wan was merely a side piece; the true traitor who deserved a thousand deaths was Chen Feng.
Watching Su Wan die so easily, Chen Feng’s face twisted into an ugly mask of rage. He glared at Lin Huai, his voice trembling: “For the sake of our past together, I’m giving you one last chance: hand over the coffin!”
Lin Huai tapped her boots against the roof and dropped from the vehicle like a swooping hawk, her war scythe whistling through the air straight toward his neck.
“You can see the coffin when you’re dead!”
Chen Feng drew a bronze sword to parry, scrambling backward in a frantic retreat.
During their duel in the arena, he had died beneath this very scythe. The memory of having his head cleaved from his shoulders was still fresh, and the sheer sight of the black blade sent an icy dread straight through his bones.
“Brother Long, Brother Hu! Master Cloud Cliff, Old Demon, help me! I can’t hold her off alone!”
Master Cloud Cliff remained seated on a smooth boulder, calmly stroking his whisk as if deep in thought. “My apologies. Maintaining this binding domain requires all of my concentration. I have no spiritual energy left to assist you in combat.”
Old Demon of Xiangxi stayed crouched on his rocky ledge, taking another slow puff of smoke. His raspy voice was flat and mocking: “Chen Feng, are you playing us for fools?”
He narrowed his hidden eyes. “If you can’t even beat a girl, what good is giving you her coffin? We might as well cut a deal with her instead. In the end, we only need the artifact, not you.”
Chen Feng panicked, his voice rising in desperation: “I’m not lying to you! I’m the only one who knows how to unlock the coffin’s true power! Besides, look at her—she’s completely unreasonable! She never reached the end of the road in the past life, so she knows nothing about what’s coming! She can’t help you! I am your only reliable partner!”
Master Cloud Cliff stroked the white hairs of his whisk. “Then fight her first. Prove you can survive, and we will… reconsider our options.”
Lin Huai glanced toward Master Cloud Cliff and Old Demon of Xiangxi. Confirming that neither had any intention of stepping in, she let out a quiet sigh of relief.
Chen Feng was clumsy in direct combat, but his evasive maneuvers were slippery. Meanwhile, Dragon Crossing the River and Tiger Suppressing the Mountain charged forward with weapons raised, forcing Lin Huai to shift her focus.
Her body flickered across the sands like a ghost. Feigning a heavy strike toward Chen Feng, she abruptly pivoted mid-air, locking onto Tiger Suppressing the Mountain, who was still fumbling to aim his heavy machine gun!
Her wrist snapped forward, hurling three intermediate Heavenly Thunder Talismans into the dirt beneath his feet.
Boom!
A deafening roar of thunder shook the ground. While the lightning strikes did not hit the burly man directly, the violent shockwave tore through the earth, shattering his balance and sending his heavy frame stumbling sideways. His grip slipped, and the spinning barrel of his gun dipped toward the sand.
In that fraction of a second, Lin Huai’s crescent blade closed in like a bolt of black lightning!
