Chapter 62: Staircase Horror
The police station called.
Bai Cha went out and answered the phone in the stairwell.
“Ms. Gu, we have investigated and found out that the person at your door last night was from 704 across the hall. His name is Chen Yan, and he does have mental health issues. We contacted his family, and according to them, he often claims he can see things. He said he saw a raincoat man following you when you came back.”
The stairwell also had motion-sensor lights and windows, so the light wasn’t dim.
After the police officer on the phone said these words, especially the last sentence, the voice seemed to become a bit distorted.
A drop of water fell into her hair from above.
Bai Cha reached out and touched it, moved slightly away, and looked up, but there was nothing.
Only a patch of water stain was visible overhead, as if there was a leak.
But this shouldn’t be the top floor, right?
The police officer on the phone was still talking.
“Chen Yan refused to admit that the thing at your door and the gift last night were placed by him. We had to trace the address on your delivery package from yesterday. But that phone number is a dead number, the owner passed away a year ago.”
The police officer’s voice began to sound ethereal, and the pitch was also drawn out, like the sound playing from an old television with audio problems.
The outside had darkened sometime without her noticing.
Unease appeared on Bai Cha’s face. She subconsciously wanted to leave the stairwell, but then found that the door to the stairwell was locked and wouldn’t open no matter what she did.
“However, according to our investigation, there was a case in that building a year ago. It was a… girl… later… at the scene… another corpse…”
The voice on the phone became intermittent, and the pitch became increasingly strange.
Then it stopped abruptly.
A bone-chilling coldness spread.
Bai Cha heard footsteps behind her.
She turned her head, leaning against the door behind her in terror, watching a swaying figure gradually ascend the stairs in the darkness.
A bloody smell filled the air.
Drip…
A drop of water landed on Bai Cha’s head.
She raised her hand to touch it but didn’t dare to look up.
She only let out a scream and started running upstairs.
[Don’t run! Running around randomly in the stairwell is just asking for death!]
[Running isn’t impossible, but don’t panic so much, it’s really easy for something to happen]
[Forget it, you can remind her but she doesn’t care]
Bai Cha was immersed in fear, constantly running upwards, and then she ran to the rooftop.
This office building had a total of 20 floors.
Bai Cha went forward to open the rooftop door almost without thinking. Fortunately, the rooftop door could be opened.
Rushing out onto the rooftop, Bai Cha realized that the sky had become very gloomy without her noticing, as if brewing a blizzard.
The biting cold wind made her shiver uncontrollably.
The rooftop door she had closed behind her was suddenly banged on violently.
Bai Cha let out a scream, then covered her mouth, quickly scanning the rooftop for any cover to hide behind.
There were a few places on the rooftop that could provide some cover, but none that could completely conceal a person.
Bai Cha was overwhelmed with fear and didn’t know what to do. After hiding in a corner, she took out her phone to send a message to
Darling Yuqi.
Her phone was now displaying “No Signal.”
As if she hadn’t noticed, Bai Cha tapped “send.”
And it was sent successfully.
[gbx]: Help me, call the police again for me!
[gbx]: No… is calling the police even useful? That thing… Bang—
The rooftop door was slammed open violently.
Bai Cha immediately covered her mouth, shivering in the cold wind.
Her phone was still on silent.
Darling Yuqi sent a message.
[Darling Yuqi]: Don’t be afraid, it’s okay.
Bai Cha was so scared that she couldn’t type anything.
Another huge noise erupted at the rooftop entrance, like a heavy object falling down.
Then everything went silent.
So silent that even the wind seemed to have stopped.
The coldness, however, became even more pronounced, and the surrounding air even became humid.
Bai Cha couldn’t control her chattering teeth and could only put her fingers in her mouth, biting them with her teeth so she wouldn’t make any sound.
Tap! Tap! Tap!
A footstep was approaching.
Closer and closer.
Until it was behind her.
Bai Cha’s pupils shrank sharply. She turned her head in terror and sat down abruptly on the ground.
But there was nothing behind her.
Empty, only the cold wind blew past, chilling her to the bone.
Bai Cha sat frozen on the ground until the ground was too cold, freezing her hands and causing them to ache. Only then did she come back to her senses and pick up her phone, trembling.
The phone signal had returned.
She pretended not to know and saw the second message from Darling Yuqi.
[Darling Yuqi]: I will always be here.
Bai Cha couldn’t stop crying as she scrambled to her feet clumsily and cautiously peeked towards the rooftop entrance. There was nothing there.
The sky had also become clear, the clear sky after a fresh snowfall.
She stumbled back and tentatively opened the rooftop door.
Inside the stairwell, there was no longer any black mist swirling around, but a damp, fishy smell still lingered at the tip of her nose.
Bai Cha’s mental state was clearly affected by the shock, and she almost fell several times while going downstairs.
When she reached a landing on one floor, her foot slipped, and she fell towards the stairs behind her.
At the same time, a cold chill seemed to come. As Bai Cha fell, she felt something cold on the back of her head, as if a cold hand was blocking her head from hitting the stairs.
That hand was really cold.
It almost made her jolt.
Bai Cha scrambled up from the ground clumsily, looking back with suspicion and uncertainty.
Then she cried even more uncontrollably, almost rolling and crawling back to the 19th floor.
And then she ran straight into her supervisor.
The supervisor was also startled by her appearance, grabbing her arm. Seeing her all dirty, shivering, and crying, she asked,
“What happened to you? I saw you weren’t at your desk, and Xiaolin said you went to make a call. I came to the stairwell to check. What’s wrong?”
In her panic, Bai Cha grabbed her supervisor’s hand. Her supervisor’s hand was very warm, which seemed to bring her back to her senses a little.
She burst into tears.
Her supervisor was overwhelmed by her crying and could only keep comforting her while constantly looking around the corridor, afraid that someone would see and misunderstand that she was bullying her.
“Don’t cry, what happened? What’s wrong?”
Bai Cha cried very miserably, and because of the cold, her nose was running. Her face was covered in tears and snot. The supervisor had to take out a tissue from her pocket and give it to her.
She took the tissue with trembling hands to wipe her tears, shaking like she had Parkinson’s.
The supervisor then showed a hesitant expression again.
“What exactly happened?” she asked, seemingly a little helpless.
