Chapter 87: Who Did This?
Guan Zining didn’t even know how she got out of the car. Her hands, holding Su Tao, trembled uncontrollably.
What happened?
Wasn’t everything fine just a moment ago?
Su Tao took a deep breath and said, “I-I’m fine… It’s not my blood. He was impersonating Major Shao, but I saw through him…”
Guan Zining snapped back to reality and carefully examined Su Tao from head to toe. Sure enough, aside from a dislocated wrist and some bruises, there were no other wounds.
She let out a long sigh, feeling her rationality slowly return, her mind gradually clearing up.
So everything she had seen earlier—the so-called “sweet moment”—was all fake.
At that moment, that person had been holding Su Tao hostage!
Guan Zining gave herself a hard slap.
Su Tao was startled and grabbed her with her uninjured left hand. “What are you doing?”
Guan Zining hugged her tightly, still shaken.
“I’m sorry, I’m really sorry. I was careless.”
She could fully imagine how dangerous the hostage situation must have been just now. If things had gone just a little differently… Su Tao could have lost her life right before her eyes!
She had been too foolish!
Su Tao, on the other hand, comforted her. “But I’m fine, aren’t I? That impostor wasn’t very professional. He didn’t even bother to investigate my situation properly. He didn’t know I was carrying a crystal-powered gun. He didn’t even check my holster—he was too careless. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had the chance to fight back.”
Guan Zining felt somewhat reassured and loosened up a bit. She picked up a torn piece of fabric from the ground and examined it carefully.
“He thought you were carrying an ordinary gun, one that couldn’t penetrate his high-density bulletproof vest.”
Xuedao, upon sensing the unfamiliar scent of blood, also calmed down. It stopped barking wildly and instead just kept licking the blood off Su Tao’s face.
Lin Fangzhi, on the other hand, remained in a daze. He neither spoke nor moved, just leaned tightly against her.
Guan Zining searched the area and soon found broken pieces of a walkie-talkie.
Her face darkened. “That guy had accomplices. They shouldn’t be far.”
Just as Su Tao was about to say something, Shi Zijin and his group returned.
Seeing the bloodied scene—bodies everywhere, the ground covered in blood, and Su Tao herself drenched in it—everyone was shocked.
Shi Zijin rushed over immediately, his expression turning ice-cold.
Su Tao quickly opened her mouth to explain, “I’m fine, I’m fine. Calm down.”
But it was obvious that Shi Zijin was not calm. He scooped her up in one swift motion, checked her dislocated and bruised wrist, and through clenched teeth, spat out, “Who did this? Guan Zining, get over here!”
Su Tao immediately covered his mouth. “Don’t yell at her. This isn’t Zining’s fault this time—not even Xuedao noticed.”
Xuedao circled around Shi Zijin, sniffing repeatedly, whimpering softly.
Guan Zining, being tough, actually stepped forward, straightened her neck, and said,
“Major, punish me. It was indeed my negligence. That bastard disguised himself as you. I saw him, but I didn’t suspect a thing. I let him take Su Tao right under my nose.”
Su Tao, afraid Shi Zijin might actually break her bones, quickly interjected, “He has accomplices, Major. Catch them first—deal with everything else later.”
Shi Zijin said nothing. He carried Su Tao back to the vehicle and coldly told Guan Zining, “This is the first and last time.”
Then, he called Jian Kaiyu over to check on Su Tao’s wrist.
After arranging everything, Shi Zijin crouched before the blood-soaked wreckage, extended a finger, dipped it in the blood, and touched it to his tongue.
In an instant, a man’s entire life flashed through his mind like a reel of film.
The man’s name was Wei Yangqiu. His awakened ability was called “Actor”—he could perfectly mimic a person’s appearance, voice, even their scent and personality.
That explained why neither Xuedao nor Guan Zining had noticed anything wrong.
Su Tao was able to see through it so quickly because of her sharp instincts and quick reactions.
Wei Yangqiu was one of the supernatural beings raised by the Jiang family, working for their warlords.
This time, Jiang Qingxiang’s younger brother had tipped him off that one of the most heavily guarded vehicles in the Dongyang convoy contained water and fuel. His task was to impersonate him, infiltrate the vehicle, and steal the supplies from inside.
But Wei Yangqiu alone wasn’t enough, so they sent another ability user to assist him—a spatial manipulator named Zhou Qing.
Zhou Qing could break spatial laws, phase through walls, and move freely.
The plan was for Wei Yangqiu to lure the guards away while Zhou Qing, hidden in the shadows, phased into the vehicle to steal the water and fuel.
What they hadn’t accounted for was running into Su Tao, who had just stepped out of the shower.
When Shi Zijin saw, in his mind, the moment Su Tao’s wrist was seized and she was in so much pain she nearly lost her voice, he abruptly stood up and left the convoy at lightning speed.
When he returned, he was dragging a man behind him.
Zhou Qing was in complete shock. “Why are you grabbing me?!”
He had escaped right after the incident—how had they caught him so quickly?!
Shi Zijin ignored him, stepped on his back, and called to Cen Tianjiao for a dagger.
Zhou Qing’s eyes widened in horror at the sight of the gleaming blade. He struggled violently.
“What are you doing?! I’m with the Jiang family! You can’t touch me! Otherwise, you’ll never make it out of Shou’an!”
Shi Zijin didn’t respond. He raised the knife, brought it down, and severed Zhou Qing’s right hand at the wrist. Blood sprayed everywhere.
“Aaaahhh—!”
Cen Tianjiao shoved a handful of dirt into his mouth. “Shut up.”
Dang Xingyan searched Zhou Qing’s body, pulled out a walkie-talkie and a communicator, skimmed through them, then spat on the ground.
“Boss, the people of Shou’an were plotting against us all along. I knew something was off when they let Kaiyu go so easily. Turns out they were just waiting to wipe out our entire supply convoy. We can’t let this slide. We should hit them back.”
Shi Zijin loaded his gun. “Lao Er, you lead the team out first.”
The convoy began moving toward the outskirts of the city. Su Tao looked out the window, then turned to Guan Zining.
“Where are they going? They look like they’re about to massacre a city.”
Guan Zining, itching to go with them, gritted her teeth. “Revenge.”
“Huh? But this isn’t even our turf. Can we really just storm in like that?”
Guan Zining shrugged. “With Zhou Hai and Zhou Yang around, it’ll be fine.”
Feeling reassured, Su Tao turned to Jian Kaiyu.
“Did they mistreat you? You’re so thin you barely look human.”
Jian Kaiyu forced a smile. “They didn’t starve me or anything. Just kept me under house arrest. But the stress killed my appetite. Here, let me see your wrist.”
“Your bones are fine. Boss Su, you really need to take better care of yourself. It’s not just Tao Yang and the others who need you—just look at our boss. You getting injured is like stabbing him in the heart.”
“But you really made a huge contribution this time. If you hadn’t caught on so quickly, they would’ve infiltrated the Bone Wing compartment. If that thing had been let loose… the consequences would’ve been unimaginable.”
