Chapter 383: Boss Gu’s Damned Pride
Hui Shu swallowed nervously and said, “Dr. Zhong, everything you said is true.”
“It’s absolutely true. Why did the boss suddenly disappear?”
Hui Shu glanced at the balcony and said, “The boss needs a cigarette to calm down…”
After hanging up the phone, the room fell into complete silence. Hui Shu observed his boss’s expression carefully before suggesting cautiously:
“Boss, how about preparing the car tonight and heading to Taoyang first thing tomorrow morning?”
Gu Mingchi stubbed out his cigarette and asked, “Did you get the facts straight?”
Hui Shu nodded quickly, his tone full of disbelief:
“Taoyang really has a large supply of medicine. Dr. Zhong mentioned they even have a public pharmacy where anyone can buy medicine. They also stock over-the-counter drugs—anything available on the market can be found there. Boss, if anyone else said this, I might not believe it, but Dr. Zhong… he wouldn’t lie or exaggerate.”
Gu Mingchi was silent for a long time before suddenly posing a tricky question:
“Is Su Tao just repaying a favor, or is there something else?”
Hui Shu’s scalp went numb instantly.
In his heart, he thought—aside from repaying a favor, what else could Boss Su want? If she really had feelings for their boss, wouldn’t she call him more often? Most of the time, she didn’t even remember he existed.
But outwardly, Hui Shu played along:
“Boss Su is repaying your kindness, but she also cares about you and the Eastern District. As soon as the medicine arrived today, she immediately had Dr. Zhong inform you. I’d bet no other district gets this kind of priority.”
Gu Mingchi thought his reasoning was solid. His expression relaxed as he waved his hand and said:
“Go ahead and prepare the vehicles. Also, send half of the new weapons we recently acquired to Taoyang. And pass along a message to Su Tao—those who attacked Taoyang recently were from the Dingnan Base. About fifty to sixty of them are hiding in an abandoned grain and oil factory southwest of Dongyang. I’ve already had my men surround the place. If she gives the word, I’ll burn the whole place down—people and all.”
Hearing this, Hui Shu winced in pain.
So many weapons—hard-earned after multiple negotiations and transported from Changjing—were just going to Taoyang like that.
Well, he supposed it was fair trade for the medicine.
Just as Huishu was about to leave, Gu Mingchi stopped him, his tone conflicted:
“Make sure she knows—I don’t take her kindness for granted.”
Hui Shu instantly understood.
Damn pride.
Just yesterday, their boss had planned to secure a batch of medicine and deliver it to Taoyang to flex the Eastern District’s strength.
But now, not even a day later, it was the Eastern District accepting charity from Taoyang…
Su Tao also contacted Pei Dong, asking her to send vehicles to collect medicine the next day and distribute it across the districts.
Within half an hour, the district chiefs got wind of the news.
It was a night destined to keep many people too excited to sleep.
Su Tao herself wasn’t particularly excited—just a bit annoyed.
She had gotten home early, but someone kept hovering around her, chattering non-stop.
While she washed her face and brushed her teeth, he rambled on about how Cen Tianjiao used to roll around on the ground like a grilled sausage after being spanked by his mother, and how last night, he saw Xiao Wenyu on the balcony, cursing her father as a shameless playboy over the phone.
Su Tao spat out her toothpaste foam and said, “TV dramas can’t even contain your restless soul anymore? You need to take midnight strolls to pass the time?”
“Aren’t you afraid of scaring people to death?”
Shi Zijin replied seriously, “Too much TV is bad for your eyes.”
Su Tao rolled her eyes. “You’re a ghost—worried about nearsightedness?”
“Balance is important. Even ghosts can get tired from too much screen time.”
“Funny—you never complained when you were running missions all day. But now that you’re a ghost, you’ve completely slacked off.”
She kicked him out of the bathroom. “I’m taking a shower—be decent.”
Shi Zijin, though pushed out, continued chatting through the door:
“By the way, did you hear that Jiang Yu found his sister?”
Su Tao turned on the hot water and replied, “Yeah, I was surprised too. I’d already braced myself to bring back a box of ashes.”
Shi Zijin grew curious. “How did he find her?”
“The details are unclear. Apparently, her body went missing from the burial site. Most thought zombies had eaten her, but Jiang Yu refused to give up. After several days, someone claimed to have seen her, and he eventually found her in a nearby shelter.”
Shi Zijin asked, “Is she okay? Being missing for so long…”
Su Tao hesitated while washing her hair. “She looks fine, no visible injuries. But… her personality seems to have changed a lot. Jiang Yu senses it too—he says she’s grown distant and cold.”
Shi Zijin nodded thoughtfully. “Has anyone tried asking her about it?”
“No. Jiang Yu doesn’t dare, and it’d be inappropriate for outsiders to pry. We can only wait for her to open up… But honestly, I get a weird vibe from Jiang Tong.”
Shi Zijin was surprised. “You dislike her? You’ve barely met her.”
Su Tao shook her head. “I wouldn’t say I dislike her… but being around her makes me uncomfortable. It’s strange—like she’s dangerous, somehow.”
Given Su Tao’s sharp intuition, Shi Zijin took her feelings seriously.
“I’ll go check on her tonight,” he said.
Su Tao raised an eyebrow. “Be careful—she’s just a teenage girl. You sneak into my room all you want, but creeping around hers makes you a perv.”
“…Fair point. I’ll just observe from outside,” Shi Zijin conceded.
Later that night, Su Tao had an unsettling dream—Jiang Yu, tears streaming down his face, firing a bullet straight into Jiang Tong’s forehead.
When she woke up drenched in sweat, the sun had already risen, and Shi Zijin had long since gone.
“That dream was insane…” she muttered.
Would Jiang Yu really harm the sister he fought so hard to find?
If it was a premonition, Su Tao didn’t want to believe it.
Her gut told her something was deeply wrong.
