Chapter 185: How Could It Have Bad Intentions?
Professor Yuan paced around anxiously, sneaking hopeful glances at Su He, clearly wanting to ask something but too embarrassed to say it out loud.
Su He found it amusing and said slowly, “Professor Yuan, Ms. Nie said it’s inconvenient for her to write, so she asked me to pass along a message. She hopes you’ll take good care of your health. Though you two can’t contact each other for now, she believes you’ll reunite someday. She also gave me money and cloth coupons to buy you two sets of clothes.”
As she spoke, Su He began taking things out of her shopping bag. “These two outfits were bought with Ms. Nie’s money. This one is from me as a gift to you! And these two tins of Little Bunny milk candies are also from me. Oh, and here’s the change left over. Please keep it.”
Professor Yuan stared blankly at the clothes and didn’t take the money, so Su He just placed it on the tea table.
She thought to herself, These two old lovebirds really are quite pitiful.
Seeing his eyes turning red, she quickly changed the subject. “Professor Yuan, I noticed Ms. Nie looks quite young—probably just in her early forties. You must be over twenty years older than her, right?”
Professor Yuan nearly blew a fuse.
“I’m only five years older than her!”
Su He: “Oh. Then you aged in a hurry.”
Professor Yuan, fuming, pointed toward the door. “Out! Get out, now!”
Su He chuckled mischievously. “Oh dear, I misspoke. It’s not that you look old—it’s that my teacher’s wife maintains herself so well. Young, beautiful, and deeply in love with you—truly enviable!”
Professor Yuan’s anger vanished in a flash.
“You never know when to shut up—always talking nonsense! Now tell me exactly what happened during your trip, and I’ll give you some advice.”
But once Su He finished recounting everything, Professor Yuan was at a loss for words.
You’re out there yelling at foreigners and securing massive export deals—what advice could I possibly offer?
After a long pause, he said, “No matter how many side jobs you’ve taken, don’t drop the translation work I gave you. You need to make time for it.”
Su He nodded. “Of course. Don’t worry, I’m a professional. I won’t let you down.”
Professor Yuan wasn’t so sure. This girl has so many roles now—can she really handle everything?
He couldn’t resist asking, “Why are you taking on so much? Is it just for the money?”
Su He straightened up and said seriously, “Professor Yuan, you underestimate me!
You’re working tirelessly, even sacrificing sleep, to build a giant computer—are you doing that for money?
Of course not!
You’re doing it so that our China won’t be bullied or controlled anymore. You’re working toward national strength and independence!
I may not be as capable as you, but my heart is the same!
I want to build up my hometown. I want my fellow villagers to live better lives.
When each of us lives well, the country will naturally prosper!”
Professor Yuan nodded repeatedly. “Well said! But you must also know your limits. Don’t overwork yourself.”
“I understand. If there’s nothing else, I’ll head out now. I’ll come by another day.”
After sending Su He off, Professor Yuan suddenly remembered something.
Wait a minute—I wanted to make her my honorary granddaughter, but she’s calling Wenjie her teacher’s wife. Doesn’t that mess up the generational hierarchy?!
Then he remembered how she said he looked prematurely aged and hurried to the mirror.
Hmm… I do look a bit old.
Better ask that old fellow Zhuge Hongqiang for a skincare recipe. Gotta take care of myself…
After leaving Professor Yuan’s house, Su He originally planned to go directly to Su Yongshi’s place. But then she remembered she had forgotten the gifts she bought for them and had to return to the flat.
The door was locked—Old Madam Zhao and Granny Su had already gone to Yongshi’s place with the couple.
Old man Ge was still home next door. Earlier, Su He and Granny Su had invited him to join them for dinner, but he had declined.
Su He took out her key and opened the door. The Exchange Center suddenly bounced out.
“Host, earlier you disabled my location tracker. Could you please turn it back on now?”
Su He had already forgotten about that. Hearing its request, she said coldly, “Are you still going to ask me for remote storage fees in the future?”
[Never again! Never ever again! Host, that was a brainless thing I said. But I have a brain now—I won’t say such foolish things again!]
Su He: “…”
After turning the tracker back on, the Exchange Center spoke in its robotic voice:
[Friendly reminder, Host: don’t forget to call your boyfriend! Frequent communication keeps love fresh and long-lasting!]
Su He: “…You are so annoying! Go chill somewhere else!”
The Exchange Center slunk off, dejected.
It didn’t mean any harm—just trying to meet its KPIs!
It only wanted to promote some gifts, but didn’t even get the chance before being scolded!
Despite scolding it, Su He thought it had a point—she really should call Gu Chiyan and let him know she was safe.
But it was inconvenient to make calls in An County. There were no public phone booths, so she would have to borrow a phone from a workplace.
I’ll do it after dinner—maybe from the night school. That way, I can catch up with the teachers and students too.
After locking the door, Su He brought the gifts over to Su Yongshi’s house.
In the courtyard, Su Jinbao was enthusiastically practicing with a stick. When he saw her come in, he dropped it and ran over.
“Big Sis, you’re finally back!
I even dreamed about you every night. Without you around, even the candy tastes bland!”
Su He: I’m working all day in S City, and you still expect me to show up in your dreams every night? I’m going to drop dead from exhaustion at this rate!
Jinbao clung to her arm, snuggling close. In just a few minutes, he had called her “sis” more than a hundred times!
Tiezhu, as usual, was more reserved. He simply greeted her and stood quietly nearby, though his eyes were a little red.
Su He went inside and began handing out the gifts.
Su Yongshi and his wife each got a set of clothes. She also bought a few books on design for Cao Hongmei.
Jinbao and Tiezhu each got a fountain pen and two picture books.
Jinbao was thrilled!
He stuffed his pockets with Little Bunny milk candies, grabbed the comic books, and dashed outside to show off.
Tiezhu silently sat down and flipped through his books.
Granny Su peeled a candy and said warmly, “Tiezhu, don’t just read—eat another candy too! You’re still growing. You need to eat well!”
As she spoke, she fed the candy to Tiezhu. Though her main goal was still the house, she had to treat the kids with a clear conscience.
Cao Hongmei made a large, hearty meal. The whole family sat together, warm and cheerful, eating while listening to Su He… brag.
When Jinbao heard she had become deputy director of the sales department at the food factory, his first reaction was:
“Sis, does that mean we don’t have to pay for sponge cakes and canned food anymore?!”
Su He: “…”
Your brain really only works when it comes to eating, doesn’t it?!
