Chapter 216: Sure Enough, She Has Me in Her Heart
Su He felt a little guilty. Lately, she had been too busy dealing with Third Son Su and his wife, and had completely forgotten about sending the photo.
The “Local Tyrant Fish” must be craning his neck waiting for it!
If she delayed too much, he might just cut the line.
What should she do?
Say the post office delayed it? No way—there’d be a postmark with the date.
Blinking innocently, Su He folded up the letter and went to Qian Huifang’s office.
“Auntie Qian, I need to make a phone call.”
Qian Huifang smiled. “Perfect timing, I have to step out for a bit. Keep an eye on things for me.”
That “errand” was just an excuse—it was really to make things convenient.
Qian Huifang was deeply grateful to Su He. Both her position as deputy director and the apartment she was about to move into had been made possible by Su He.
After Qian left, Su He dialed Gu Chiyan’s workplace.
The moment Little Wang heard it was Su He, he rushed to the lab to get him.
For days, Gu Chiyan had been hoping for a letter, only to be disappointed each time.
Hearing Su He’s call, he hurried over to pick up the phone.
“Hello, this is Gu Chiyan.”
Su He’s voice was cautious: “Comrade Gu Chiyan, I…I haven’t sent the photo yet.”
Gu Chiyan’s heart sank instantly. What did she mean by this? Was she planning to break things off with him?
Just as his heart was in turmoil, Su He continued, “I originally wanted to send you the photos taken in the Magic City. But I didn’t think they looked very good, so I went to the county photo studio to take another. Still, I wasn’t satisfied.
I thought I’d try again later until I get one I like, then send it to you. I was afraid you’d be anxious, so I wanted to let you know first.”
Relief washed over Gu Chiyan, his heart sweetened.
Clearly, Comrade Su He took their relationship very seriously—otherwise, she wouldn’t be so picky about her photo.
He said warmly: “No rush. Just send it whenever you’re satisfied with it.”
“Mm. Once I have a good one, I’ll mail it. Oh, and when our food factory officially starts producing instant noodles, I’ll send you a few packs to try.”
Gu Chiyan’s heart grew even sweeter.
Sure enough, Comrade Su He has me in her heart.
“You’ve successfully brought in the instant noodle production line? You mentioned it on the phone before, but we were always in such a hurry I forgot to ask.”
Though Su He loved a touch of bragging, she always kept modest around Gu Chiyan. She only skimmed over her accomplishments in the Magic City.
Now, hearing him ask, she replied with a smile, “Yes. The Magic City food factory didn’t want to continue the project, so we brought it in instead.”
Just as Gu Chiyan was about to ask for details, Su He’s office door opened. Secretary Yang said: “Little Su, the factory director wants to see you!”
Su He had to say to Gu Chiyan: “The director is calling me. I’ll ring you another day.”
“Alright.”
Su He hung up and went to Director Hu’s office.
Director Hu told Secretary Yang: “Little Yang, step out. I need to speak with Su He privately.”
Secretary Yang’s smile stiffened, but she nodded and closed the door.
Director Hu beamed: “Little Su, our machinery factory has double blessings to celebrate!
Yesterday, Old Tian came to me and talked about the instant noodle production line—that’s the first joy.
The second is that we’ve made a major breakthrough in improving the seed drill. After several successful tests, our simple planter will soon be ready for production!”
Su He was both surprised and delighted. “You’ve developed it this quickly?”
Director Hu chuckled: “The technology wasn’t hard. We’d just been limited in our thinking before and never considered this direction.
It’s thanks to your excellent suggestion, Little Su. You’re truly a great contributor to our factory.
So when we submit the research results for the planter, your name will be listed first among the developers.”
Su He hadn’t expected him to say that. For a moment, she felt flattered.
If it were Director Tian, he would’ve put his own name first, at best giving her second place.
Before she could respond, Director Hu went on, “Also, we plan to apply for the ‘He’ trademark.
First, because planters are for planting grain, and ‘He’ (grain) is a fitting name.
Second, the textile factory’s hair accessories already use the ‘He’ brand, and they’ve even received foreign trade orders. We hope to ride that momentum. What do you think?”
Su He thought, comparison really shows the difference.
Just look at Director Hu’s way of handling things. No wonder the machinery factory was always the leader—his vision was leagues ahead of the other directors.
She smiled sweetly. “Director, I’ll follow your lead!”
Director Hu grinned. “Good, it’s settled then!”
…
Leaving Director Hu’s office, Su He didn’t go back to her own. Instead, she went straight to the photo studio.
She’d already stood up the “Local Tyrant Fish” once—doing it again would be too much.
The county only offered black-and-white photos, but Su He didn’t mind. She needed to get one done quickly, otherwise he might cut the line.
After the photo, she headed straight to the night school.
The night school was quiet during the day—perfect for writing to Old Gu. Once she finished, Principal Chen could help polish it.
“Dear Old Gu,
Greetings.
This is Su He. We once met on the train.
Forgive me for writing abruptly. First, I wanted to let you know that the funds you donated have already been transferred to our An County night school.
Second, I’d like to report on my work.
After listening to your teachings on the train, I realized that earning foreign exchange through exports is of utmost importance, and each of us should contribute our part.
Thus, after arriving in the Magic City, I fully tapped into the foreign guest resources of Jinxiang Hotel and secured export orders for both the Food Factory and the No.1 Textile Factory.
Though the total amount wasn’t large—about 300,000 USD—it broadened my horizons and gave me insight into foreign trade.
I also signed a hair accessory order for the An County Textile Factory. Though only 30,000 USD, it’s a promising start.
The hair accessory industry is labor-intensive, which is precisely where our nation’s strength lies. It has great potential for growth.
An County has also introduced the instant noodle production line from the Magic City and improved the recipe. The product will soon hit the market.
Although the overseas instant noodle market is dominated by Japan, we are confident we can seize a share.
In addition, our county’s machinery factory has made a breakthrough in small-scale agricultural machinery research, which may open markets in developing countries.
Our entire county is united, striving to sign more export orders and earn more foreign exchange.
We urgently need a platform to showcase ourselves. We hope you can grant us a booth at the Autumn Harvest Expo…”
After finishing, Su He went to Principal Chen’s office and knocked on the door.
Inside, Principal Chen was fussing with his hair. Perhaps because of his good mood lately, a few precious new strands had sprouted in the bald patch on his crown.
As he fussed, he muttered to himself: “Grow, grow, grow… grow, grow, grow…”
