Chapter 57: What Are You Afraid Of?
Pei Xiqing froze.
She lowered her eyes and said nothing.
Ling Lang walked over, shoving his hands into his pockets.
“No matter what you’ve done,” he said, “as long as it isn’t murder, arson, or moral corruption, my brother hasn’t said a word against you. Why are you so anxious?”
“Even if something really happens, my brother and I will take care of it. Don’t look so pathetic. People who don’t know any better will think I’m the one bullying you.”
He was right.
Duan Xiaolin hadn’t said anything yet.
She didn’t need to panic.
Even if a problem had come up, it was already done and couldn’t be changed now.
Ling Lang sensed that something was amiss. “Why do I feel like every encounter I have with you turns into a trap? Did you trick me?”
Pei Xiqing looked up. “Guess.”
“Hmph, it doesn’t matter. If you’re that worried, I’ll go take a look around and then go test the waters with my brother.” Ling Lang shrugged. “You stay here. Even if the guards come up, they won’t dare to barge into this office casually.”
With that, he turned and left.
Pei Xiqing sat back down in the chair, gently stroking Xiaobai. She rested her cheek in her palm, her mind full of worry.
Duan Xiaolin was the Chief Judge, the gloomy villain of this book. He was cruel, cunning, and had always been a deadly enemy to the protagonists’ group.
Now, her thoughts were in a total knot. Whenever she thought about him, she felt a complicated, physical fear. It wasn’t the anger or resistance you feel after being lied to; she genuinely just didn’t know what to do next.
Even if Duan Xiaolin chose not to hurt her, she had still triggered the system’s security alarm. The base might not have a place for her anymore.
An outsider had discovered the base’s deep secrets. Who knew how many people would be punished for that security failure? If the base guards caught her, she would probably never get another chance to escape.
For a zombie, this place was an endless hell.
Even with Duan Xiaolin by her side, she was an outlier from start to finish. And those who are different are never tolerated by the ordinary world.
Pei Xiqing stared at the closed door and whispered, “Zombies and humans really can’t coexist, can they?”
Xiaobai didn’t understand. He just stayed quietly by her side.
Pei Xiqing stroked his head. Xiaobai was her only real companion here. Transmigrating into another world with a completely different identity and a dangerous situation had stripped away her sense of security more than once.
Perhaps loneliness and silence were the only paths left for her to walk.
Down in the water dungeon, Duan Xiaolin also received the warning from the system.
At first, he didn’t care. He simply continued to interrogate Ye Kui step by step. Just as Ye Kui painfully gasped out a name, the administrator’s communicator rang.
A base-wide order was patched through. It was an arrest warrant.
The man wiped his blood-stained fingers with a handkerchief, his eyebrows raising slightly. He clicked to open the details of the warrant, and a familiar, beautiful face appeared on the screen.
Interesting.
“When did this happen?” he asked.
The subordinate behind him whispered, “Ten minutes ago, sir.”
“Do you want to approve the warrant? The high command has already initiated the arrest protocol.”
Duan Xiaolin tossed the stained handkerchief aside, his lips curling into a slight smile. “Where is she now?”
“She was trying to avoid the guards, so she seems to have been circling the building. Right now, she is hiding in your office.”
The man’s eyes grew deep. He turned and walked out of the cell, stepping into the elevator to go upstairs.
The bottom three floors of the water dungeon connected directly to the main tower. The elevator rose rapidly, finally snapping to a halt on the 30th floor.
When Duan Xiaolin walked out with his men, the head of the base was already there, leading a group of ability-user guards. The person in charge looked incredibly worried and kept cursing under his breath. But the moment he saw Duan Xiaolin, he quickly showed his respect. “Chief Judge.”
Duan Xiaolin looked at the crowd. “Looking for someone?”
“There is a spy in the base! We are executing a full lockdown and search,” the person in charge explained quickly. “It’s a clueless woman. I don’t know how she sneaked in, but she was actually able to override our internal elevator controls. We don’t know how much data she has stolen from us yet.”
“But please rest assured, Your Honor. We will apprehend her as fast as possible. Since she managed to sneak into the central tower without making a sound, she must be a tough nut to crack. If she turns out to be a difficult opponent to break, we will need your expertise to pry her open.”
Duan Xiaolin seemed to smile, but it was impossible to read his true expression. When it came to interrogation—the very thing he was best at—his reaction was entirely indifferent.
The head of the base grew a bit nervous under his silence and didn’t dare to say anything else. He turned to his men to leave. “Since that’s the case, let’s not waste any time. I will take the team down to start the search first.”
As they were about to step away, the man spoke up slowly. “Cancel the pursuit.”
The person in charge froze in shock. “Why? That woman’s origins are unknown. I’m afraid she’s after the base’s core secrets…”
“The person is already in my hands.”
“What?”
“I will interrogate her myself.”
The person in charge hesitated, then nodded. “…Well, that is for the best. I believe the Chief Judge will give us a fair answer.”
Duan Xiaolin didn’t comment. He turned and led his inner squad down the hall.
Standing in front of his office door, he raised his hand to press the biometric scanner, but found the lock had been jammed from the inside.
“Open the door,” his voice echoed through the speaker.
Inside, Pei Xiqing had been daydreaming on the sofa when the sudden sound made her spin around. She quickly pulled Xiaobai back.
She heard the heavy door click open. With nowhere left to hide, she ran head-on into Duan Xiaolin as he stepped into the room.
The man’s cuffs were stained with fresh blood, and his aura was full of a cold, dangerous edge—he looked exactly like the dark villain from the book.
Noticing her gaze, he casually began to roll up his sleeves, walking toward her step by step.
Pei Xiqing didn’t know what to say. She instinctively took a step back, trying to avoid any contact with the man’s bloody hands.
Duan Xiaolin’s expression darkened. A cold smile appeared in his eyes behind his glasses. “What are you hiding from?” he asked softly. “Or rather, what are you so afraid of?”
