Chapter 64 – This Kind of Behavior Must Be Stopped
Lin Yuejiu stared at him in surprise. “You—the great Study-God Xu—would actually climb over the wall? If anyone found out, your reputation would be ruined.”
“I don’t care,” he replied casually.
As he spoke, he started forward. Lin Yuejiu quickly pressed a hand against his chest and gave him a little shove. “Oh, just go already! I’m heading back. Good night.”
The words had barely left her lips before she turned and hurried back to the dormitory.
Xu Nianshen only turned to leave once he had watched her disappear into the dorm building.
After returning to her room, Lin Yuejiu went straight to the balcony, watching his figure until it faded into the distance outside the school grounds before she went back inside.
Chen Qianxi asked curiously, “Jiujiu, what are you looking at from the balcony? Was there a shooting star?”
“No… I was just looking at the scenery, relaxing a little.”
Chen Qianxi nodded. “True, you did just finish the math exam today.”
That night, as she lay in bed, Lin Yuejiu kept staring at her phone. There were no new messages, though she kept refreshing over and over again. The familiar chat box remained completely silent.
She sighed inwardly. Was this what it was like to be newly in love? Always waiting expectantly for the other person’s reply?
Biting her lip, she decided: since he had been the one to confess, she would be the one to send a goodnight first.
Just as she typed it out and hit send, a new notification popped up at the exact same time—it was Xu Nianshen’s “Good night.”
Lin Yuejiu read his message carefully, the corners of her lips curling upward uncontrollably. Hugging her phone, she laughed. She realized—both of them had sent it at the same moment.
So, they were already this in sync. The thought made her grin again. She couldn’t help but roll around happily on the bed. In her excitement, she didn’t notice until too late—she rolled right off and landed on the floor with a dull thud, her back colliding with the hard surface.
“Owwww—!”
The noise startled Chen Qianxi awake. She quickly turned on the light, and the dorm was instantly lit. What she saw made her blink: Lin Yuejiu clutching her waist on the floor, groaning in pain, the scene somewhat comical.
Chen Qianxi couldn’t hold back a laugh. She hurried down from her bed to help her up. “Jiujiu, what happened? How did you manage to fall off the bed in the middle of the night?”
Lin Yuejiu rubbed her waist and muttered resentfully, “This bed is too small.”
“But we’re in a double dorm. These beds are way bigger than the ones in eight-person rooms.”
“…”
“Come on, how did you really fall? Were you thinking about something and got too excited?”
“…I was thinking about the upcoming finals, and it got me frustrated. So I rolled around a little on the bed, and then… I wasn’t paying attention and fell off.”
Chen Qianxi clicked her tongue. “Tsk tsk, top students are terrifying.”
Lin Yuejiu chuckled, though in her heart she silently gave thanks: thank you, math! Thank you, dear Math!
“Does it still hurt now?”
“Nope, doesn’t hurt anymore,” she answered immediately.
“Alright then.” Chen Qianxi turned back to her bed.
With a guilty smile, Lin Yuejiu said, “Sorry, Xixi, for waking you up.”
“It’s fine. I was half-asleep anyway. Don’t feel bad. But Jiujiu, you should sleep early too. Math isn’t worth wasting your precious rest or brain cells over.”
“Okay, I’m turning off the lights.”
“Mm, good night.”
The next morning, when she got up, Lin Yuejiu rubbed her waist again. While brushing her teeth, she held her left hand against her side and brushed with her right. Yesterday had been far too embarrassing—all because she sent a message, got happy, rolled around, and ended up on the floor.
She spat out the white foam.
This kind of behavior must be stopped. Not only does it mess with her emotions, it even injures the body.
In class, Lin Yuejiu was summoned to the office by the math teacher. Meanwhile, Chen Qianxi was discussing a problem with Du Zhuo.
When they finished, Du Zhuo stretched and thumped his own waist.
“What’s wrong with your back?”
“Huh?” Du Zhuo reacted, then answered, “Oh, maybe it’s because I’ve been bending over too much. I’ve been doing a lot of housework at home these past few days, always bent over, so my waist’s been a little sore. That’s why I sometimes rub or thump it to ease the ache.”
“Why is it that everyone’s got back problems lately?”
“Everyone?” Du Zhuo caught the key word. “Who else?”
“Jiujiu.”
From the front row, Xu Nianshen instantly perked up his ears at that name.
“Lin Goddess? What happened to her?”
“I didn’t know what she was doing either. I was asleep when I was suddenly startled awake by a loud thud. I turned on the light, and guess what—I saw Jiujiu on the floor!”
Du Zhuo’s eyes widened. “On the floor? What happened? Was she sleepwalking?”
“No, she couldn’t sleep, so she was rolling around on the bed… and then rolled right off.”
Since Du Zhuo wasn’t very familiar with Lin Yuejiu, he didn’t laugh when he heard this. Instead, he asked, “Why couldn’t she sleep?”
“After I helped her up, I asked her. She said she kept thinking about the next round of the math competition and couldn’t stop, so she couldn’t sleep.”
Du Zhuo clicked his tongue and shook his head, echoing Chen Qianxi’s words exactly: “Top students are terrifying.”
Xu Nianshen turned and asked, “Do you know roughly what time she fell off the bed?”
Chen Qianxi thought carefully. “It was probably a little after ten.”
“Any more specific?”
Chen Qianxi rubbed her chin. “Well, after helping her up, I went back to bed and checked the time before I closed my eyes—it was 10:10. So she must have fallen sometime around 10:03.”
“I see, thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” She smiled, then asked curiously, “Study-God Xu, why are you asking so many details about this?”
Xu Nianshen smiled. “Nothing.”
He pulled out his phone and checked. Last night, he had sent his “good night” at exactly 10:03. So… had she gotten so excited about their simultaneous messages that she rolled off the bed?
Xu Nianshen couldn’t help but smile, the corners of his lips lifting.
Not long after, Lin Yuejiu came back hugging a stack of papers. Someone caught sight of them and gasped in horror. “Lin Goddess, don’t tell me those are math test papers for us?”
“No, these are competition practice papers from the teacher.”
The person instantly gave her a look of sympathy. “You poor thing.”
“Yeah.”
Back at her seat, Chen Qianxi caught sight of the papers and immediately jumped up. “Don’t tell me that’s our math homework?”
Lin Yuejiu spoke in a tone of despair. “No, this is the math teacher’s… personal care for me.”
Chen Qianxi patted her shoulder from behind. “Wow, the math teacher really likes you.”
Lin Yuejiu shook her shoulder free, and Chen Qianxi sensibly withdrew her hand, no longer disturbing her. After all, right now a gloomy cloud clearly hung over Yuejiu’s head.
“What’s wrong?” A gentle voice sounded by her ear.
Lin Yuejiu immediately dropped the papers onto his desk and complained, “Why is the math teacher like this? We both made it to the finals, so why did only I get stuck with these papers? It’s so unfair!”
Xu Nianshen looked at her pouty, aggrieved little face and chuckled. “So, what do you want to do about it?”
“Since we’re a team—and desk mates—you have to share these papers with me!”
“And what if I don’t want to?”
Lin Yuejiu glared fiercely. “Even if you don’t want to, you have to. Today, you must take half of these papers!”
Xu Nianshen’s eyes flickered with surprise. This little girl… could actually be fierce?
“Mm, I’ll take half then.” Xu Nianshen counted out the papers, and once he was done, he leaned close to her ear and whispered, “I heard you got so excited last night that you rolled off the bed. Since I’m half the reason for that, I’ll take responsibility.”
