Chapter 71: Taking a Seat
Sesame was indeed a good-tempered little cat and quickly got used to the presence of Gu Qinghuan and Jiang Chuchu.
However, the two of them didn’t play with him for long and turned to explore Yu Xin’s room.
As a fan of interior design games, Gu Qinghuan asked excitedly about Yu Xin’s plans while examining the room.
“Are the walls just going to stay empty like this? Oh, are you planning to make a cat wall later?”
“The desk seems a bit small; maybe you could get one of those storage carts…”
Jiang Chuchu wasn’t very interested in these things. She glanced at the walk-in closet instead.
As soon as the door opened and the sliding rail was pulled — the Yu family really was stingy; there was still empty space in the closet.
She pursed her lips slightly and examined the brands and quality of the clothes.
Most of the clothes in this closet seemed to be gifts sent periodically by stores to regular customers. The sizes were fine, but it looked like Yu Xin hadn’t worn them much.
Maybe she didn’t like the style? Jiang Chuchu thought the colors were too bright; Yu Xin suited more subdued tones.
The clothes in the other closet had colors suitable for Yu Xin, but the styles were ordinary and the quality average — likely things she bought online herself.
Immediately, Jiang Chuchu felt a sense of responsibility: both Gu Qinghuan and Yu Xin urgently needed to improve their taste in clothes! She would have to take charge.
She stopped inspecting the closet and returned to the living room, catching Gu Qinghuan chatting with Yu Xin. She sat nearby, listening carefully.
“I basically stay in my room, practice calligraphy and study, play with Sesame, and during rest time, play on my phone,” Yu Xin said.
“Isn’t that boring?” Jiang Chuchu interjected.
“Not really. Compared to before, life is going pretty well now,” Yu Xin said calmly. “Last night, Mom asked me and Yu Yuan about our test scores. Yu Yuan said it was okay, and Yu Jinxin said that when the grades come out, if she improves, he’d replace her tablet. Mom said she’d also buy me one.”
One was “replace,” one was “buy” — it was clear Yu Xin didn’t yet have her own tablet.
Jiang Chuchu raised an eyebrow, slightly annoyed. “If Yu Jinxin hadn’t mentioned it, your mom wouldn’t have thought of it at all, right?”
“Well, at least she didn’t make getting a tablet conditional on your progress,” Gu Qinghuan quickly soothed Jiang Chuchu.
She thought for a moment. “But I am a bit surprised that Yu Jinxin said that.”
“Why?” Jiang Chuchu didn’t understand.
Yu Xin knew what Gu Qinghuan meant and nodded. “Yes, I was surprised too. I thought he would just give Yu Yuan a tablet, not tie it to her grades.”
“He was just saying something nice in front of your mom, right?” Jiang Chuchu scoffed. “Even if Yu Yuan didn’t do well, he’d still give it to her.”
“That’s possible,” Gu Qinghuan admitted. “Either way, Xin Bao is getting a tablet, which is great.”
Yu Xin brightened up. “Yes! I saw online that learning on a tablet is more comfortable; the phone screen is still too small. And there are some special apps I can use once I get it.”
In reality, with Yu Xin’s current bank balance, she could afford a tablet.
It was just that spending money bit by bit gave her more psychological pressure than spending it all at once.
More importantly, if Yu Wenli bought it for her, it wouldn’t be taken from her account!
Gu Qinghuan and Jiang Chuchu were momentarily speechless: what a real top student! The tablet was genuinely for studying — just thinking about it made them feel ashamed.
Gu Qinghuan quietly pulled out her phone to tell Qin Yue: she wouldn’t let him escape the awe inspired by top students just because he wasn’t there!
Qin Yue replied quickly: [What’s the point of exciting me for your sake? [Bye]]
Gu Qinghuan instantly felt happy and tucked her phone away.
However, if Yu Jinxin truly decided to give Yu Yuan a tablet based on her grades, then based on what she overheard yesterday in the bathroom, Yu Yuan probably wouldn’t get it.
Gu Qinghuan didn’t plan to tell Yu Xin or Jiang Chuchu — Yu Yuan and Lin Xiaoxue hadn’t said anything malicious, and revealing it unilaterally would be disrespectful.
From what Yu Xin had told them, although Yu Yuan could be arrogant and petty and had been sarcastic toward Yu Xin a few times, she hadn’t really done anything malicious.
If Yu Yuan were scheming to harm Yu Xin, Gu Qinghuan would definitely warn her. But this kind of mild behavior didn’t need to be mentioned; bringing it up would only increase tension between Yu Xin and Yu Yuan.
In reality, they hadn’t held any major grudge. Being moved around wasn’t Yu Yuan’s fault; it wasn’t as if she considered Yu Xin her family.
Yu Xin saw through this clearly. Coupled with Xia He’s “encouragement,” recently she had no desire to interact with Yu Yuan at home.
Rather than competing over clothes or tablets with Yu Yuan, it was better to show off her skills in front of Yu Wenli and Cui Wanning.
The three of them, plus the cat, chatted in the room until lunchtime, only leaving when a servant came to announce it. Jiang Chuchu realized how quickly time had passed.
“You’ve been talking this whole time?” she said in surprise.
“Well, in her own room, Xin Bao can say things she wouldn’t say outside,” Gu Qinghuan explained.
The topics were related to her family, and it wouldn’t be good for others to overhear.
Moreover, if she hadn’t grown stronger and braver to confront the Yu family, Yu Xin wouldn’t have been able to speak so openly.
Yu Xin felt a little embarrassed. “Is it wrong to say bad things about my family?”
Jiang Chuchu immediately disagreed. “That’s not bad; you’re just stating facts!”
The three exchanged glances and, unprompted, laughed together.
They went downstairs laughing, and with the servant’s guidance, took their seats.
Yu Wenli was already sitting in the main seat. Cui Wanning, Yu Jinxin, and Yu Yuan sat on one side, while Yu Xin and her friends sat on the other.
Jiang Chuchu sat opposite Yu Jinxin, Gu Qinghuan opposite Cui Wanning, and Yu Xin and Yu Yuan faced each other.
The seating didn’t seem to follow seniority or hierarchy. Gu Qinghuan couldn’t fully understand it, but guessed it was mainly so Jiang Chuchu and Yu Jinxin would sit facing each other to talk…
Wait!
Gu Qinghuan became alert. At first, she thought Yu Wenli wanted Yu Jinxin to behave well in front of the esteemed Jiang Chuchu, to impress her and promote business cooperation between the Jiang and Yu families.
But following typical melodramatic patterns, perhaps Yu Wenli actually wanted Jiang Chuchu to take a liking to Yu Jinxin?!
Thinking this, Gu Qinghuan immediately felt a sense of crisis.
Although she trusted Jiang Chuchu’s judgment wouldn’t fall for such a trap, if it really happened, Jiang Chuchu would either have to endure it or make a scene.
Either way, it would put Yu Xin in an awkward position.
Gu Qinghuan encouraged herself silently: in the eyes of the Yu family, she wasn’t “shallow” or “rude,” right?
If Yu Jinxin really tried to show off, it would be up to her to handle the performance!
This is quite a fun light book.
