Chapter 93: Gaining a Grandpa
Su He was nearly finished eating and gave Old Madam Su a knowing look.
Old Madam Su immediately understood.
“In-law, you’ve digested enough, haven’t you? Get up and eat now!”
Although Old Madam Zhao wanted to stay stubborn… her stomach had other plans.
She could only get up and eat—four whole cornbread pancakes—looking extremely aggrieved.
Old Madam Su curled her lip. Always acting like she’s on the verge of death, yet eats more than a pig!
Su He wanted to help with the dishes, but Old Madam Su insisted she didn’t need help and told her to walk around the yard to digest her food.
As soon as Su He stepped outside, Old Man Ge from next door came out.
He had finally made up his mind—no more beating around the bush!
That little girl wanted him to treat her grandma, right? Well, she could be his granddaughter first, and then he’d help!
He waved at Su He.
Su He climbed over the wall. “Old man, what’s up?”
Old Man Ge had mentally prepared himself, but now that the words were on his tongue, they wouldn’t come out.
Su He waited… and waited… but he didn’t say anything.
Carefully, she asked, “Old man, do you have something on your mind lately? You seem kinda off.”
Old Man Ge glared at her. You’re the reason, you little rascal!
He took a deep breath and blurted out, “Do you want to be my granddaughter or not?”
Su He looked completely dumbfounded. “What?”
Old Man Ge had already thrown caution to the wind. Gritting his teeth, he repeated, “I said—do you want to be my granddaughter? If you agree, I’ll treat your grandma’s leg. If not, go find someone else!”
Su He was almost knocked out cold by this sudden windfall!
Of course she was willing! Who wouldn’t be?
But she also knew the old man had a strange temper. If she agreed too eagerly, he might back out.
So she pretended to think it over. “It’s not like I have a habit of collecting grandpas, but since you insist, fine—I’ll reluctantly accept you as my grandpa.”
Old Man Ge: “…”
Why did that sound so wrong?!
Then Su He rubbed her hands together. “Grandpa, shouldn’t you give me a welcome gift?”
Old Man Ge: …Suddenly regretting this decision.
Su He was just joking, but he took her seriously.
“When you get married, I’ll prepare a dowry for you—make sure you get married in style!”
Su He grinned but didn’t take it to heart.
“Grandpa, once Uncle Qi finishes making the wheelchair, I’ll take my grandma to the county hospital for a checkup first. After that, you can start treatment so others don’t get suspicious.”
Old Man Ge was in a fantastic mood now. If Su He said the moon was square, he’d agree with both hands.
The next day, Qi Weimin delivered the repaired wheelchair.
Su He and Old Madam Su lifted Old Madam Zhao into it and wheeled her around the yard.
Old Madam Zhao’s eyes reddened—not from habit this time, but from emotion.
Since becoming paralyzed, she could only move by crawling or being carried.
Now, with a wheelchair, even if her legs couldn’t be cured, life would become much more manageable.
Old Madam Su rolled her eyes and said sourly, “Look how thoughtful Su He is! That wheelchair must’ve cost a lot—could’ve made dozens of outfits with that money!”
Old Madam Zhao choked up. “Su He is such a filial child… I’ll take good care of her from now on…”
Old Madam Su snorted. “We’ll see about that. Just stop leaking like a cat every second—that’d already be an improvement! Anyone who doesn’t know would think you’re sitting in a torture chair, not a wheelchair!”
Old Madam Zhao instantly fell silent like a chicken.
Su He pursed her lips, trying not to laugh. Only magic can defeat magic—her grandma’s combat power was off the charts!
The next day, Su He and Old Madam Su took Old Madam Zhao to the county hospital.
Su He went straight to Dr. Gao, the same doctor from last time, who examined Old Madam Zhao.
Given the limited diagnostic tools of the time, the doctor concluded that the leg nerves were being compressed by her spine.
There wasn’t a great treatment available. He prescribed some medication and told Su He to apply heat and give regular massages.
It was the same conclusion Old Madam Zhao had heard from other doctors before.
Su He got the medicine and wheeled her back home.
Not long after, Old Man Ge arrived.
He took Old Madam Zhao’s pulse and then began acupuncture.
Old Madam Su gloated from the sidelines. “In-law, aren’t you always yelling about people poking your heart? Well now look at you—your whole body’s full of needles! You’re practically a porcupine!”
Old Madam Zhao: “…”
What did she do to deserve this kind of in-law?
Su He saw that Old Man Ge’s forehead was drenched in sweat, so she gently wiped it with a handkerchief and glanced at Old Madam Su.
Old Madam Su immediately fell silent and sheepishly went to make him a sweet drink.
Since the needles needed to stay in for 30 minutes, Old Man Ge drank the sugar water during the wait.
After removing the needles, Su He asked, “Grandpa, can my grandma’s legs recover?”
Old Madam Su blinked. Grandpa?
Had Su He gone crazy? Even if you’re calling him Grandpa, at least add a last name! Otherwise people might think she and Doctor Ge were a couple!
Old Man Ge paused for a moment and said, “Too much time has passed. Full recovery is impossible, but walking again is definitely possible.
Take the hospital meds as prescribed and combine them with acupuncture. In about a month, she can start practicing standing. Gradually, she’ll be able to walk again.
But the whole process might take around six months.”
Old Madam Zhao choked up. “Doctor, are you serious? I can really walk again?”
After getting a firm answer, she burst into tears of joy.
This time, Old Madam Su didn’t mock her. After all, this was a reasonable reaction—crying out of happiness.
After Old Man Ge left, Old Madam Su asked Su He, “Su He, why did you call Doctor Ge ‘Grandpa’?”
Su He explained how he’d insisted on being her grandpa before agreeing to treat her grandma.
Old Madam Su burst out laughing. “I always knew my eldest granddaughter was smart! Now we’re family—he won’t charge us for treatment! We’ll save tons on doctor bills for colds and headaches too!”
Su He: “…”
Still, Old Madam Su gave her a good idea.
“Grandma, when Grandpa Ge comes back tomorrow, have him check your pulse too.”
Old Madam Su pulled a face. “I’m not even sick—why should he check my pulse? Seeing doctors for no reason is unlucky!”
Su He sighed and explained, “Back in the day, titled ladies and noblewomen all had doctors check their pulse regularly…”
Before she could finish, Old Madam Su quickly said, “Lately I’ve been feeling dry-mouthed. Let’s have Doctor Ge check my pulse every day from now on!”
Su He: “…”
Old Madam Zhao gritted her teeth silently: No wonder you’ve got a dry mouth—you cursed me until you were foaming at the mouth!
