Chapter 45: Link, Ambush!
On the other side, Ning Wu’s family was caught in a desperate life-and-death chase, with a horde of zombies relentlessly pursuing them.
During their escape, they encountered a screeching zombie. Ning Wu didn’t recognize its special characteristics and failed to kill it in time. Its scream attracted dozens more zombies to chase them.
Although Su Ning wasn’t afraid of zombies herself, the same couldn’t be said for Ning Wu’s family.
However, when Su Ning saw Ning Wu running ahead, she was even more surprised.
Despite carrying most of the supplies on his back and holding Tao Tao in his right arm, his speed did not decrease at all. He even had enough energy to pull Zhang Feifei along and help her run.
She activated Scavenger’s Eye to scan Ning Wu.
[Player: Ning Wu]
Talent: Acceleration — Can instantly increase his own speed, including reaction time and attack speed.
Su Ning sighed in amazement. No wonder he could run so fast—it turned out he had a special talent.
She let out a helpless sigh and thought to herself, “This guy’s really lucky.”
Although Ning Wu’s talent didn’t seem very impressive on the surface, it was practically a godsend in situations like this. Su Ning thought he could probably run even faster if he weren’t carrying his wife and child.
After a thrilling escape, the four of them finally managed to avoid the terrifying zombie horde.
Even the zombies drawn in by the screecher had been shaken off.
Ning Wu could finally stop and catch his breath.
He was panting heavily, clearly drained—Acceleration consumed a lot of stamina.
Su Ning, on the other hand, had a self-healing talent, which allowed her to recover her stamina, so she wasn’t nearly as exhausted as Ning Wu.
Elsewhere, the zombie slaughter in the rain of bullets continued, and Su Ning’s mission progress was rapidly increasing.
This was only the second day, and out of the 100,000 zombies she needed to kill, she had already completed nearly a tenth.
“As expected, crisis is also opportunity.”
Su Ning silently mused to herself. She even started wondering if she should actively seek out zombie hordes to speed up her mission.
Zombies: ??
Meanwhile, Ning Taotao jumped down from his father’s arms and ran off in a certain direction with his short, chubby legs.
Zhang Feifei asked urgently, “Taotao, where are you going?”
“Mom, I smell something! There’s a crowd of people gathered ahead!” Ning Taotao said excitedly.
Hearing the little boy’s words, both Ning Wu and Zhang Feifei’s faces lit up.
“Could there be a group of players gathered there?”
But they quickly calmed down. In this world, the danger didn’t just come from zombies—people were even more unpredictable.
Su Ning might’ve been a fortunate exception, but others might not be.
So staying cautious was the wisest choice.
Just as Ning Wu was about to leave, he noticed that Su Ning had suddenly stopped walking.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
Su Ning frowned.
She realized that the farther she got from the Bulletstorm Zombie, the harder it was to maintain control over it.
The distance would soon become too much, and she’d lose this perfect helper.
Su Ning felt a little disappointed. “Looks like some abilities do have their limits.”
But she quickly composed herself.
Turning to Ning Wu, she said apologetically, “Sorry, we’ll have to part ways here.”
Ning Wu looked puzzled. “Why? We’ve already escaped the zombie horde, and there might be other survivors or players ahead. Wouldn’t it be safer if we acted together in this instance?”
Su Ning shook her head. “I know, but I still have things I need to take care of.”
Hearing that Su Ning was leaving, little Taotao became very sad.
Su Ning looked at the adorable child in front of her.
She gently ruffled Taotao’s hair but said nothing.
Seeing how firm her decision was, Ning Wu didn’t try to stop her. He thanked her sincerely, “Thank you for that delicious meal. It made us feel warmth we haven’t felt in a long time. Even though we can’t travel together, I hope everything goes well for you.”
Su Ning smiled. “You’re welcome.”
Then she turned and walked in the opposite direction from them, her figure gradually disappearing into the darkness.
Ning Taotao looked sadly in the direction she had left.
Zhang Feifei pinched her son’s slightly thin little cheek. “One meal was enough to win you over?”
Ning Taotao sighed like a little adult. “Didn’t it win you over too, mom?”
Zhang Feifei was speechless. But she looked in Su Ning’s direction with a sigh. “I have a feeling there’s something mysterious about that girl.”
Ning Wu put his arms around his wife and son. “To survive alone in such a dangerous instance, she must be very capable. And she can even cook such delicious food. She’s definitely not someone we should mess with.”
Zhang Feifei nodded, fully agreeing with her husband.
After Su Ning left, she checked the surroundings and then released her perception zombies. With their help, she returned to the original furniture store.
That’s right—Su Ning had returned. Unlike before, the streets were now almost packed with zombies. Even rooftops and walls were crawling with young mutants.
Even without Ning Taotao’s super-sensitive sense of smell, Su Ning was almost overwhelmed by the stench of corpses coming from the zombie horde.
She returned to the spot where she had cooked earlier. Carefully locking the door and sealing the windows, she confirmed the area was safe. Then she took a clean mattress out of her space, laid it on the floor, lay down, and closed her eyes to focus—ready to establish a connection with the Bulletstorm Zombie.
This was another ability Su Ning had discovered about the zombie virus: she could project her consciousness into zombies she had converted.
However, during this transfer, her physical body was completely unprotected.
That’s why she came back here—zombies posed no threat to her, and with three loyal zombie guards around, she had nothing to worry about.
Link established. Vision transferring.
Su Ning looked down and confirmed she was now in the body of the Bulletstorm Zombie.
The moment she moved, a wave of hunger flooded her mind.
“What the hell? Zombies can feel hunger too?”
Apparently, zombies weren’t perpetual motion machines.
Su Ning frowned. She decided to cut the link for now and summon it back to her side.
After all, this zombie was her greatest asset and the key to completing her 100,000 zombie kill mission. She couldn’t risk anything happening to it.
Just as she was about to act, her pupils were suddenly locked by a blinding red light—and then, an ear-shattering gunshot rang out!
The moment she was targeted by the red light, Su Ning’s zombie body reacted instinctively, swiftly dodging the ambush.
The next second, a bullet whooshed by, grazing the zombie’s cheek!
“How is this possible?!”
Elsewhere, Zhongsun Junzhang, who had been observing this strange zombie for a while, was utterly shocked.
He stared in disbelief at what had just happened.
His ambush had failed.
He had expected his shot to easily hit the target—yet the zombie had dodged with incredible agility.
