Chapter 16: Bunny Rats
The scene was extremely gory—Su Ning didn’t dare stay and quickly returned to her dormitory.
But her mind kept thinking about the Starfruit.
“It can awaken a new ability, almost like unlocking a new talent. No wonder the Starfruit is considered a treasure of the Moke Tribe.”
Su Ning was deeply envious. Her current talents, like Scavenger’s Eye and Scavenger Backpack, were all support-oriented.
The only combat-related skill she had was [Perfect Aim], and Su Ning truly hoped to gain some strong, self-defense capabilities.
“If I ever get the chance, I must obtain another Starfruit.”
But judging by the way the Moke Tribe guarded it, that Starfruit wouldn’t be something others could easily covet.
The first day in the livestock farm dungeon passed just like that. It wasn’t clear if the following days’ tasks would increase in difficulty.
*
The Next Day
The familiar bell rang.
Su Ning immediately became alert.
Her mission for the day was quickly issued:
[Mission: Kill 10 food-stealing Bunny Rats!]
[Reward: 10 copper coins, +100 experience points!]
There was only one mission today, but having seen what happened to Zhang Kexin the day before, Su Ning didn’t dare assume killing 10 Bunny Rats would be simple.
“I’ve got a bad feeling these Bunny Rats aren’t just ordinary pests.”
Su Ning went to the farm. Even though she didn’t have a feeding task today, she still fed the Meaty Chickens, both to collect their eggs and due to her breeder profession.
While there, she glanced into her Scavenger Backpack, which held many dead worms. She wondered if these disgusting insects might be useful in the future.
While organizing her backpack, Su Ning found the corpses of the two people she had killed outside the shelter.
Originally, she thought she’d end up in a wilderness survival-type dungeon like Virus Town. But instead, she ended up in this kind of task-based dungeon, where freedom was restricted—and if you failed a mission, you’d be fed to the bugs.
So she hadn’t bothered dealing with those two corpses until now.
“Wait a minute…” A lightbulb went off in Su Ning’s mind.
She went to the giant flower, checked that no one was around, and tossed the two corpses nearby.
As if it understood her intention, the Flower devoured both bodies.
Crunch!
Su Ning endured the chilling sound of bones being crushed and watched as the flower consumed the remains.
Worried that danger might arrive without warning, she kept practicing her archery to sharpen her skills—while staying alert to any signs of the so-called Bunny Rats.
Su Ning also browsed the player-run stores to see if there was anything useful.
Unfortunately, she was disappointed—all of it was junk.
Of course, her own Survival Superstore also sold junk she’d picked up in the dungeon. No one was better than anyone else.
While waiting, she noticed some commotion in the Meaty Chicken area.
The chickens had suddenly panicked and were fleeing in all directions.
Su Ning rushed over—there was no way she’d let her precious egg-laying chickens get hurt by a Bunny Rat.
Once she arrived, she saw a half-meter-tall rabbit burst up from the ground and begin chasing a chicken!
A glint of cold flashed in Su Ning’s eyes. Her arrow gleamed as it shot through the air—
Whoosh!
Direct hit—right through the Bunny Rat’s head!
One-shot kill!
The Meaty Chickens huddled in fear, trembling in a corner.
Su Ning walked over to examine the Bunny Rat.
Technically speaking, it wasn’t a rat at all. It looked more like a huge, gray-brown rabbit.
[Bunny Rat]: Omnivorous mammal. Its meat is rich in mineral elements. Edible!
Note: Bunny Rats are quite dangerous. Beware of their sharp front teeth—they can bite through steel with ease.
Su Ning’s eyes lit up at the word edible.
That meant this was good stuff—actual meat.
“I can complete the task and get meat out of it too? If there were more missions like this, I wouldn’t mind at all.”
But then she recalled the Scavenger’s Eye‘s warning about the Bunny Rat’s danger level.
“I killed that one with a sneak attack. If it had managed to bite me—my arms or legs would’ve been gone in a second!”
After thinking it through, Su Ning decided to play it safe.
She climbed onto the roof of the small tool shed on the farm—a high spot where she’d be safe from attack and still have a clear view to shoot the Bunny Rats on sight.
From this vantage point, she could also observe other players around the area.
However, due to the difficulty of the missions, fewer and fewer players were showing up. Some who failed yesterday’s mission didn’t return at all.
“With the official version of the survival dungeon released, I wonder how many people will quit next time…”
Thankfully, entering the survival dungeon wasn’t mandatory—it was meant to provide disaster relief to Earth’s population.
Su Ning shook her head. Right now, all she could do was focus on getting stronger.
“Once I finish this mission, I’ll use my free time to explore. I was right not to leave the farm yesterday. I bet those who tried to steal the Starfruit did so right after finishing their missions and got caught.”
And so, Su Ning waited for more Bunny Rats to appear.
Each one popped up in unexpected places, but all of them were taken out with headshots by Su Ning’s flawless arrows—none even got close to her.
She completed the mission with ease.
Later, when the administrator came to inspect:
“Breeder Su Ning, excellent work. You’ve done very well with your tasks over the past two days. Keep it up. With your performance, you qualify to be promoted to a higher-level breeding farm.”
Su Ning gave an awkward laugh—she suspected higher-level farms would be even more dangerous.
She felt things were fine as they were now—at least she could gather extra resources, like the Meaty Chicken eggs.
Thanks to her diligent feeding, the Meaty Chickens laid eggs very frequently, and each chicken had grown plump from all the food.
Su Ning had originally planned to use her free time to look around…
But then, several Moke Tribe staff members in different uniforms arrived at her farm.
Among them was the administrator who usually checked her work.
“Breeder Su Ning, your Meaty Chickens have reached the required size for consumption. We will now take them away. Please prepare accordingly.”
Su Ning felt her heart bleeding.
Her fat, white chickens—her treasures—were going to be eaten?
Ahhh… my Meaty Chicken eggs…!
She could only watch helplessly as they were taken away one by one.
She asked, “Where are they taking the chickens?”
The Moke administrator replied, “This area is a farm. Once the animals and plants mature, they’re taken to the slaughter zone.”
After the staff left, Su Ning found herself with free time again.
She figured it was a good chance to go explore other areas.
