Chapter 312: A Man of Faith, Kind All His Life
Li Hui lay on the heated kang bed, her hair completely drenched in sweat. She struggled to lift her upper body and looked at Ning Xiyue with pleading eyes, her weak voice trembling as she said: “Doctor Ning… please, save my child. If something happens to me… save the baby first…”
“You have a good friend and a group of caring people outside who are all praying for you,” Ning Xiyue said calmly, her tone firm yet soothing. “You and your baby will both be fine. Relax and trust me. Just follow my instructions, and soon you’ll see your child with your own eyes.”
Ning Xiyue’s voice carried a strange, comforting power. Hearing her words, Li Hui’s panic faded like a wave receding from shore. Her breathing steadied, her pain no longer drove her to scream. Her entire body seemed to fill with strength—she was calmer, more focused, her face even looked brighter.
Seeing that her emotional state had stabilized, Ning Xiyue nodded approvingly, opened her medical box, and took out a small jade bottle containing yangzhi nectar. She carefully dripped a single drop onto Li Hui’s lips to clear her mind and strengthen her body.
Worried about possible hemorrhaging or complications, she then took out a thin root of wild ginseng left from the chicken soup she had once made. This ginseng had been cultivated in her spatial dimension, nourished by fertile black soil, and was over a hundred years old.
“If things get critical, hold this in your mouth,” she instructed. “I’ll tell you when. For now, save your strength—don’t scream. When the pain gets too much, bite down on the cotton.”
Li Hui nodded obediently, clutching the thin bedsheet in her arms, gritting her teeth and bearing through the pain.
Ning Xiyue took her pulse—her condition had stabilized considerably. There was no need for a cesarean section for now, though she prepared for the possibility.
After checking her dilation, she put on gloves and began sterilizing the tools she might need for delivery.
Li Hui couldn’t hold back a groan. “It hurts so much, Doctor Ning… I think it’s coming…”
“Hang on a bit longer,” Ning Xiyue said calmly, glancing at her. “It’s not time yet—give it another ten minutes.”
Outside, Bai Yu and her husband arrived, panting heavily, hands on their knees. Bai Yu looked up anxiously at the men guarding the courtyard.
“Uncle, how’s Huihui? Is she all right?”
“For now she’s fine,” one of the men said, sitting firmly at the door. “Doctor Ning said no one is to disturb her. Just wait quietly here.”
Bai Yu had already heard about Ning Xiyue before—how she’d successfully delivered piglets during a difficult birth, and how she was also a trained doctor—so she wasn’t too worried. She nodded and sat quietly outside, clasping her hands together in prayer.
Zhou Cheng pulled out a handkerchief and gently wiped the rainwater off her face.
A moment later, Chen Yechu arrived, running straight to Bai Yu’s side. “Is everything okay inside?”
“It’s fine,” Zhou Cheng replied. “We’ve been told to wait.”
Hot on Chen Yechu’s heels came Yu Zhiyu and Ning Qingyuan. The moment they saw the shack and the people around it, both froze—their pupils constricted sharply. They exchanged glances, seeing the same unease mirrored in each other’s eyes.
As locals, the two of them were acutely aware of what this place represented. Though they didn’t believe the people here had done anything wrong, self-preservation came first. In times like these, staying away was the safest choice.
They moved quietly to stand behind Chen Yechu, heads lowered, eyes fixed on the ground, avoiding conversation with anyone else.
Ning Qingyuan’s palms were slick with sweat. His stomach twisted with worry for his sister. Damn it, he cursed inwardly. What kind of cousins are these? Dragging my sister into trouble the moment they arrive—are they trying to ruin her?
That damned relative!
He silently vowed to write a scathing letter to Ji Yanming to knock some sense into him. What kind of boyfriend lets this happen? Trying to get our whole family into trouble?!
Thank heaven it was night. If this had happened during the day, and some busybody spread rumors, the consequences could’ve been disastrous. He could already feel the headache coming on.
He had to find a way to get his sister out of this.
Yu Zhiyu shared the same anxious thoughts. Though he kept his head down, his mind was racing.
What a nerve-wracking situation… he thought. This kind of “saving lives” situation is testing the limits of my poor heart.
But he couldn’t just leave—because the woman he liked, Chen Yechu, was here. If she was staying, he would stay too, no matter the risk.
At least, he thought, it was raining and thundering tonight. That would hide a lot of things from prying eyes.
A man of faith lives a good life, he silently prayed. Please, just let this end soon. Protect us all and keep us safe.
That same prayer echoed in Ning Qingyuan’s heart as well.
And perhaps the gods did hear their plea—because soon, a heart-wrenching scream tore through the night, followed by the clear, crisp cry of a newborn baby.
Everyone outside exhaled in relief at once.
Ning Qingyuan silently repeated his prayer in his heart: A man of faith will keep his word and live righteously—please continue to bless us with safety and peace.
Yu Zhiyu put an arm around Ning Qingyuan’s shoulders and whispered, “We’re lucky men, you know. Don’t worry too much.”
For the first time in a long while, Chen Yechu’s face lit up with a genuine smile. The grim image of mother and child dying together finally vanished from her mind. The baby’s cry meant both lives were safe. With Ning Xiyue handling the delivery, fate had been rewritten—the tragedy of their previous lives would not repeat.
Everyone living in that courtyard wiped their tears. The sound of a newborn’s cry felt like a spark of hope, as if new life had breathed strength and courage into them all.
As for Bai Yu—half her heart finally relaxed. She jumped up excitedly, grabbed Zhou Cheng’s arm, and said joyfully, “She did it! Huihui gave birth!”
Then she shouted toward the hut, “Is the mother okay?”
No one answered.
Her heart clenched with unease. She wanted to rush inside but was afraid of interrupting and causing harm.
So she leaned against Zhou Cheng, closed her eyes, and kept praying silently—seeking comfort and hope through faith.
