Chapter 94: Pei Dong’s Soul-Searching Question—Is Taoyang Better or the Eastern District?
The next morning, Su Tao was woken up by a phone call from Pei Dong.
“Major Shi told me you helped secure this batch of medical equipment. I’ll come pick you up—choose what you need for Taoyang.”
“Great! Can I bring someone? I don’t know much about medical equipment, so I want an expert to help.”
Pei Dong knew she meant Zhong Gaoyi and agreed.
She quickly washed up, called Zhong Gaoyi, and got into Pei Dong’s car.
Leaning forward on the seat, she grinned. “Sister Pei, long time no see.”
Pei Dong nodded. “You look good. Congrats on returning safely.”
Then, glancing at Zhong Gaoyi in the rearview mirror, she asked, “Doctor Zhong, how do you find Taoyang?”
Zhong Gaoyi hesitated—she and Gu Mingchi were enemies. He chose his words carefully.
“Taoyang is good. Boss Su has treated me well. I’m grateful.”
Pei Dong’s gaze sharpened. “Which is better, Taoyang or the Eastern District?”
A true soul-searching question.
Pei Dong still wasn’t planning to let him off the hook. “I want to hear what you really think.”
What he really thought?
She was forcing him to make a choice, to take a side.
Zhong Gaoyi gave a bitter smile. “Boss Gu has shown me kindness, and I am not an ungrateful person. Boss Su has treated me with the utmost hospitality, and I am not someone who doesn’t know how to appreciate that. Vice Officer Pei, I think the current arrangement is the best possible situation.”
Being able to stay in Taoyang for a few days each month was already more than enough for him.
He couldn’t—and didn’t dare—ask for more.
Hearing his perfectly diplomatic response, Pei Dong let out a huff but didn’t press further.
Su Tao, on the other hand, found herself holding him in slightly higher regard.
Gu Mingchi probably never valued Zhong Gaoyi that much, nor did he offer particularly good treatment.
Zhong Gaoyi could have easily betrayed Gu Mingchi and pledged loyalty to her, securing better treatment and more recognition in return.
But he didn’t. And the reason was simply that Gu Mingchi had helped him before.
Su Tao liked people who knew gratitude, who had a moral bottom line. People like that could restrain their desires and keep themselves in check, making them good partners.
Unfortunately, Gu Mingchi had been lucky and gotten to him first.

When they arrived at the warehouse, Zhong Gaoyi’s breathing became noticeably heavier at the sight of the room filled with medical equipment.
Even before the apocalypse, these things would have been incredibly valuable. Now, they could significantly improve Dongyang Hospital’s medical capabilities.
“Major General Shi is quite the capable man…” That was his conclusion.
Su Tao, watching him eagerly, urged, “Go ahead and pick out whatever Taoyang can use right now.”
Zhong Gaoyi, being a professional, knew exactly what to take. Since he was the one handling medical care in Taoyang, there was no need for surgical equipment. Instead, he selected items useful for internal medicine and home care—blood pressure monitors, electronic thermometers, emergency life-saving equipment like cardiac defibrillators, ventilators, and ultrasonic nebulizers.
These would be useful for everyday needs, while the emergency devices could save lives in critical situations.
Pei Dong was generous. “Take whatever you want. I’ll inform the commander later.”
Watching all the equipment being loaded onto the vehicle, Su Tao was beyond satisfied.
Looks like she’d need to expand the clinic. First, she’d set up an emergency room.
