Chapter 22: Deadly Infection 7
Ugh—!
That’s disgusting.
Chu Yian, who was eating, instantly lost her appetite, and the group chat immediately erupted in an uproar, with everyone asking if this was really true.
However, before anyone could discuss it, the video was already blocked and couldn’t be viewed.
Chu Yian leaned towards it being 60% true and 40% false.
Because, as of now, there is indeed no specific cure. According to the game’s prompts, the specific cure will only be available 20 days after the outbreak of the infectious disease.
There were also two important pieces of information.
First: The infectious disease is a global outbreak, so everyone is fending for themselves and cannot receive help from the outside world.
Second: There is no means to cure the infectious disease, but antipyretics can delay its progression.
If this was true, then for her, this was super good news. After all, she had stocked up on quite a few antipyretics when she first entered the game.
She quickly tallied her medicine inventory.
Antipyretics: 50 boxes, 24 pills per box, totaling 1200 pills.
Antibiotics: 35 boxes, some with 12-pill packaging, some with 24-pill packaging, totaling 648 pills.
Masks: 189 (11 used).
Medical protective suits: 30 sets.
Gloves: 50 pairs.
As for that can of amino acid powder, it belonged to health supplements and was not counted as medicine. Roughly calculated, her medicine storage was actually more than enough.
On the seventh day of the game, the two households that ran out did not return.
Chu Yian counted the days and, with renewed anticipation, opened the treasure chest.
“A bowl of incredibly delicious braised pufferfish.”
“Note: Will be recycled after this round of the game ends.”
“Item’s inner thoughts: A non-toxic pufferfish is every gourmet’s dream pufferfish. What good luck, that you managed to draw this.”
Drawing something to eat… well, that’s considered good luck, right?
Chu Yian comforted herself with a bit of an Ah Q spirit; this thing was at least more practical than a pack of toilet paper.
She directly carried it to the kitchen, preparing to finish it off for lunch today.
With the braised pufferfish, she simply stir-fried some hot and sour shredded potatoes for lunch. Paired with two large bowls of white rice, one bowl was still delivered to Lu Qingyuan’s doorstep.
While she was eating and drinking well with abundant supplies, many people in the residential area were living very hard lives.
“Does anyone have salt? My salt is all used up.”
“I’ve been eating plain porridge and white rice at home for three meals. I’m going out to buy things, is anyone coming with me?”
“Exactly, I’m starving to death.”
“Does anyone have extra food? Share some with me, I’ll pay for it!”
…Many people in the group were asking to buy and sell things, but hardly anyone was willing to sell necessities like food and medicine anymore. Chu Yian turned on the TV, and the news channel was surprisingly using voice broadcast; besides the sound, no one could be seen.
What kind of new news broadcast method is this?
Just as Chu Yian was wondering, she suddenly heard a violent crash from outside, followed by the roar of an explosion.
What happened?
Chu Yian sat up abruptly, dropping her chopsticks and looking outside.
She saw black smoke billowing from the outside of a building across the street.
Messages in the WeChat group quickly conveyed what had happened: “Car accident, car accident (picture) (picture).”
The photos were taken from the building across the street.
In the photos, the vehicle had crashed into a tree by the main road. Black smoke and green foliage obscured most of it, making it impossible to see the situation inside.
Chu Yian remembered her drone and simply flew it out.
Soon, the drone flew outside.
Many vehicles were parked on the road, and the uncleaned ground was covered in trash. The supermarket gate on the roadside was tightly shut, and not only the supermarket but all other shops were closed, with no pedestrians on the road.
Chu Yian remotely controlled the drone to look around on the road, then flew to the vehicle emitting thick smoke.
It was a small delivery truck with a black cab, the back tightly enclosed with white tarpaulin. Chu Yian immediately recognized it; it was the small delivery truck she had constantly seen transporting supplies back and forth.
She quickly controlled the drone to get closer and saw that the cab door was open, and the driver was nowhere to be found.
Then, she maneuvered the drone to the back, and her pupils constricted when she saw the cargo inside the vehicle.
Those weren’t supplies; they were corpses!
There were no more body bags; they simply threw the corpses into the truck bed. These bodies were piled one on top of another, with yellow viscous liquid flowing down their stiffened skin, and continuing along the vehicle’s metal to the ground. The corpses’ grey, lifeless eyes stared blankly in the direction of the drone, and Chu Yian’s hand trembled slightly as she observed through her phone.
She stopped her investigation and controlled the drone to fly back.
It was truly terrifying.
The drone was parked outside the window, and she didn’t dare let it in directly. She put on a mask and medical gloves to retrieve it, then sprayed disinfectant on both the drone and the room.
As soon as she finished these tasks, the group chat had already exploded.
“What’s the situation outside? Can the neighbor who just flew a drone over tell us?”
“I called the police, but the line is busy, I can’t get through.”
“I got through, but they won’t be able to come for half an hour. Sigh, at such a critical moment, no one can be relied upon, wasting my taxpayer money.”
“Everyone, don’t be like that. The police station is also in a difficult situation now. I heard that almost all the police officers are sick; the healthy ones in the station can be counted on one hand. My grand-nephew is a police officer; I told him not to go to work the day before yesterday, but he wouldn’t listen. Now he’s infected, and he can’t go to the Hospital. His whole family is crying around him…”
For a moment, the group fell silent.
“Didn’t someone use a drone to investigate just now?”
“Yes, what’s the situation outside now?”
Chu Yian looked at their questions and, after lurking in the group for so many days, finally spoke.
“The drone is mine. The car outside crashed into a large tree. The front of the car is dented, and the whole vehicle might be scrapped. But the car door was open, so the driver should be fine.”
Chu Yian typed out a message and sent it, which quickly led to more questions.
“The driver should be fine, right?”
“To still be driving out in this situation, he’s truly daring.”
“That car is the small delivery truck that’s been running to and from the city these past few days, right? What’s inside it?”
It wasn’t just Chu Yian who had noticed the truck.
“It’s filled with a truckload of corpses.”
Chu Yian sent the message and individually tagged everyone who had mentioned calling the police and contacting them earlier: “Tell them not to go. If they don’t have good isolation protection, the police are very likely to get infected if they go.”
“Okay, okay, I’ll go inform them now.”
Chu Yian was about to put down her phone when several strangers suddenly sent her friend requests on WeChat.
“Building 2, Room 306: Hello, I’m very sorry to bother you, but do you have any antipyretics? If so, could you sell me some? My wife is about to give up, and I’m willing to pay a high price!”
