Chapter 10: Road to Survival 9
“There’s still someone alive?”
She glanced at the location, not far from here. “Teacher Lu, should we go check it out?”
Lu Qingyuan leaned back in the passenger seat, eyes closed, resting. “As you wish.”
Indeed, there was still a person on the third floor of a small Western-style building on another street.
This person was Huang Zhide, the male owner of the house.
He was lucky when the zombies appeared; he was sleeping in his room and escaped, but his wife and children all turned into zombies.
Those three useless good-for-nothings, it was fine that they died, but they even blocked him at the door of this small room. Since last night, he had continuously heard sounds of people passing by.
He had wanted to call for help a long time ago, but the sound would excite the zombies outside, so he could only watch helplessly as several cars sped away on the opposite street.
However, to his surprise, the van that left in the morning actually returned! He immediately thought of burning something, hoping they would see the smoke and discover him here.
The car really came over!
Huang Zhide was incredibly excited, standing on the balcony and waving at the vehicle below. Then he quickly returned to the room, packed all the valuable things, and waited for their rescue.
However, Chu Yian stopped the car by the roadside.
“Come over here.”
Huang Zhide watched the van stop by the roadside, anxious, and couldn’t help but shout towards the van.
This shout caused the zombies trapped outside the door to howl.
Chu Yian rolled down the window and wrote a few large characters on a white piece of paper—[Come down yourself.]
They had no idea what the situation was like inside. They were strangers; they could offer a hand in need, but not their lives. For him to come down, and for her to drive him to X City, was the most help she could offer.
“Damn it!”
Huang Zhide felt a surge of anger seeing these large characters.
At this moment, there were three zombies outside the door. If she didn’t come in and kill these zombies, how was he supposed to get out?
His face flushed crimson, and he waved vigorously at Chu Yian, muttering under his breath, “Damn it, hurry up and come over!”
Chu Yian didn’t hear the sound; she lowered her head and continued writing.
[If there are zombies inside the house, find curtains, bed sheets, or anything sturdy to climb down from the building.]
However, she had just finished writing and hadn’t even had a chance to show it to the man when an empty beer bottle came crashing down from the third floor towards her.
“Write, write, write, all you know is writing, you don’t know how to save people, damn it!”
Huang Zhide had just finished the remaining beer that morning, and his temper flared up instantly. He then found seven or eight empty beer bottles from the room, placed them on the window, and threw them one by one at Chu Yian below.
“I told you to save people! Get your ass over here, you little beast!”
Chu Yian, who was originally enthusiastic, instantly darkened. Her eyes changed, and she pulled out her pistol, aiming it at Huang Zhide on the balcony.
Lu Qingyuan, in the passenger seat, opened his eyes and watched her pick up the gun.
Bang—
She actually fired.
But she missed; the glass shattered.
Huang Zhide, who had been clamoring just a moment ago, suddenly recoiled a few steps. He was so startled by Chu Yian suddenly pulling out a gun and shooting at him that the beer bottle slipped from his hand.
The gunshot was much louder than the sound of breaking glass. The zombies in the town were attracted by the sound and began to approach.
Chu Yian didn’t linger; she drove directly out of the town.
“Hey, hey!”
Huang Zhide stood on the balcony, watching helplessly as the van left, while the zombies around his house grew in number.
The three zombies outside, still banging on the door, continued their assault, and the sound began to attract the horde of zombies downstairs who had already lost their target…
The vehicle was back on the road.
Chu Yian spoke even less than before.
She gripped the steering wheel tightly, thinking about what she had done to that man in a fit of anger, and couldn’t help but glance at Lu Qingyuan beside her.
Would he think she was a ruthless person?
And then their small team, just established, would go their separate ways?
Chu Yian had always been a law-abiding, good citizen. This was her first time doing something like this, and she couldn’t help but overthink it for a moment.
“Need to switch drivers?” Lu Qingyuan suddenly asked.
“Huh?”
She was stunned.
Lu Qingyuan: “Compared to your distracted driving, I’d feel more at ease if I drove myself.”
Chu Yian understood what he meant, pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road, and they switched seats.
As the vehicle restarted, Chu Yian felt that her overthinking wasn’t a solution. She decided to ask directly, “Teacher Lu, I just saw someone in distress and didn’t help. You…”
Before she could finish, Lu Qingyuan suddenly pressed the accelerator, increasing the car’s speed to the maximum. Just as she wondered why he suddenly accelerated, they had already passed a section of road where several cars had crashed together.
Several young people ran out of one of the cars, waving frantically at them because they couldn’t stop the vehicle.
“Wait!”
“Hey, wait!”
Lu Qingyuan completely ignored them, his eyes unblinking as he ran over the bodies on the ground and sped away along the highway.
“Damn it!”
“Go to hell!”
The young people whose plea for help was unsuccessful raised their middle fingers in the direction the van had left, then climbed back into the wrecked car.
“It’s all your fault for insisting on racing. Otherwise, I would have left here a long time ago.”
“Who the hell suggested seeking thrills last night?”
The few survivors were, surprisingly, the street racers from yesterday.
Playing with fire ultimately leads to self-immolation. They had attracted many zombies along the way yesterday; out of over a dozen people, only four escaped, and they even crashed their car and were left on the roadside.
Now, with the road ahead difficult, they began to complain to each other.
Inside the small van, Lu Qingyuan, who had shaken off those street racers, turned his head and glanced at Chu Yian.
“What were you trying to say just now?”
“Uh… nothing.”
Chu Yian thought about how Lu Qingyuan had just directly bypassed those young men asking for help, and felt that he should be able to understand her actions as well.
However, she was still a little uneasy about Teacher Lu, who was ruthless and a man of few words. What if he mercilessly abandoned her when they encountered danger?
“Teacher Lu, our alliance is very strong, right?”
Lu Qingyuan glanced at her. “Instead of thinking about these things, you should look at the map to see how much further it is to the highway.”
Chu Yian took out her phone and zoomed in on the map she had just photographed… An hour later, they finally navigated from the village roads to the highway.
At the highway entrance, a large truck had overturned, spilling gasoline everywhere, and several zombies were gathered around it. Upon hearing the sound of the approaching vehicle, they quickly changed direction and charged towards the small van.
Bang, bang, bang—
The van shook from the impact.
The glass on Lu Qingyuan’s side was cracked into a bloody spiderweb.
Chu Yian gripped the handle above her head tightly, her other hand clenching her pistol, aiming it at the zombie about to break through the window, and shot it in the head.
The gunshot made the zombies even more excited.
Even distant zombies heard the sound and rushed towards the van.
“Hold on.”
Lu Qingyuan floored the accelerator and sharply turned the steering wheel.
The small, battered van burst through the encirclement of several zombies and finally got onto the highway leading to X City…
