Chapter 395: Deliberate Trouble
Back at the City Lord’s Mansion, Yu Haojie immediately pulled Ye Jiamei into a tight embrace. His arms, trembling with emotion, made Yu Luo both amused and a little sour inside.
Was she just extra baggage? It seemed her father only had eyes for her mother!
Of course, she wasn’t really jealous. Seeing how deeply her father still loved her mother after so many years actually made her happy.
But that didn’t mean she couldn’t be a little dramatic about it.
“I knew it! I’m just extra here,” she sighed exaggeratedly. “Father doesn’t care about me at all. He didn’t miss me one bit! If Mother gives you a son in the future, my status as a daughter will drop even further… sigh!”
“Oh, stop that nonsense.” Ye Jiamei laughed. “You know how much your father loves you. He just worries about me more because I’m not as capable as you.”
Hearing this, Yu Haojie finally reluctantly let go of his wife. But even as he released her, he still held her hand, looking at Yu Luo with an utterly unapologetic smile.
“Your mother is right. This time, I was really terrified—especially since she’s pregnant. This was the first real danger she’s faced since we came here. Of course, I was worried! As for you? You had Young Master Chi protecting you. I didn’t need to worry about you at all.”
Hearing her father mention Chi Jinchen again, Yu Luo’s playful mood immediately disappeared.
She wasn’t afraid of anything—except her mother’s imagination running wild about her and Chi Jinchen.
“Hmph! Forget it, I’m not arguing about this anymore!” She crossed her arms. “I’m exhausted after all this traveling. Mother and I are going to clean up. Father, you should focus on preparing a proper banquet for Young Master Chi. We really owe him this time. If it weren’t for him, we might not have even made it past Pingyang City.”
“Right, right! You two go clean up and rest for a while. I’ll take care of the arrangements.”
Normally, their family used the bathhouse in Ye Jiamei’s medical clinic. On the road, mother and daughter had to bathe quickly inside the carriage, always on high alert due to the guards outside.
Now, finally back home, they could relax.
Meanwhile, Yu Haojie, grateful beyond words to Chi Jinchen, not only had his personal chef prepare an extravagant meal but even cooked a few dishes himself—ones so complex he hadn’t even taught the kitchen staff how to make them yet.
Just as the table was being set and mother and daughter were returning from the back courtyard, an injured man staggered into the mansion—covered in wounds.
It was Wang Xiao.
Seeing him in this horrible state, Yu Haojie’s expression darkened immediately.
Wang Xiao was the one guarding the city gate today. If he had been attacked, then whoever was behind it clearly had no respect for Luo City’s authority.
“What happened?!”
Before Yu Haojie could even move, Yu Luo had already rushed forward, grabbing Wang Xiao’s shoulders to steady him.
Ye Jiamei, without a word, turned and went to fetch her medical kit.
“Miss Yu,” Wang Xiao struggled to explain, “a group of outsiders arrived today. They were causing trouble at Lord Ye’s gambling hall—trying to smash the place up and even set it on fire! I led my men to intervene, but hundreds of them appeared out of nowhere, and a fight broke out. They were too many… We couldn’t hold them off.”
Hundreds of them?
That wasn’t ordinary trouble—that was organized.
Luo City’s patrol teams rotated daily, with around two hundred guards watching the city. At any given time, only half of them would be on duty.
If hundreds of people attacked at once, the city guards wouldn’t stand a chance.
And this wasn’t just about a gambling hall—it was about challenging Luo City’s authority.
More importantly, these people had attacked Wang Xiao himself.
This was blatant provocation.
“I’m going to see for myself.” Yu Haojie immediately turned to leave.
But before he could take a step, Yu Luo grabbed his sleeve and stopped him.
“Father, you’re the City Lord. If you go personally, you’re just giving them too much attention.
Besides, Young Master Chi is coming over soon—you need to be here to greet him. Let me handle it.”
She turned to a nearby attendant.
“Tell Zhang Hu to gather his men and surround those troublemakers. I’ll be there immediately.”
“Yes, Miss Yu!”
Quickly, Yu Luo changed into men’s clothing, grabbed her weapons, and set off with her team.
*
When she arrived, the situation had already escalated.
Zhang Hu and his men were standing off against hundreds of intruders, and the city gates had been shut.
Pushing through the crowd, Yu Luo immediately noticed Zhang Hu had a cut on his lip and blood on his collar—they had already fought.
“This is Luo City,” Yu Luo’s voice was icy. “Do you think you can fight our guards and walk away unscathed? Are you declaring war on us?”
She scanned the intruders. Their clothing resembled that of wandering martial artists, but something about them felt off.
No group of rogue warriors was ever this united.
These weren’t random thugs.
This was organized.
“Master Yu,” Zhang Hu reported, “we explained the city rules to them, but they still refuse to leave.”
Yu Luo’s gaze hardened as she focused on the leader of the gang.
The man sneered.
“Tsk. What are you looking at, pretty boy? You think your little city can boss us around?” He spat on the ground. “Your gambling hall is a scam. They cheated us. When a casino cheats, it’s our right to burn it down. What’s wrong with that?”
The man’s vulgarity made Yu Luo narrow her eyes in disgust.
Instead of answering him, she turned to Ye Lu’s men, who were standing nearby.
They recognized her immediately and quickly bowed.
“Young Master Yu, our casino follows Luo City’s laws. We do not cheat. These men came in, played three small rounds, and lost a mere ten taels of silver. Then they suddenly started accusing us of fraud—before they even lost much money.”
Hearing this, Yu Luo confirmed her suspicions.
These people hadn’t come to gamble.
They had come to cause trouble.
“What?!” The leader scoffed. “Ten taels of silver isn’t money to you? You think we need to lose thousands before we have the right to complain?!”
The crowd behind him cheered, clearly stirred up.
Yu Luo smiled coldly.
So that was their game?
Causing a scene, inciting a riot, and testing Luo City’s strength?
Fine.
She had ways to deal with people like this.
