Chapter 258: You Silly Deer
Although Su He was itching to go fleece the old traditionalist right away, she deliberately showed a conflicted expression on her face.
Gu Chiyan, worried about putting her in a difficult position, hurriedly said,
“Little Su, you don’t have to force yourself. If you don’t want to go, then don’t. We can talk about it later.”
Su He shook her head.
“Chiyan, since Grandpa invited me to your home, it would be rude to refuse.
Besides, I don’t want you to be caught in the middle. I want to try—for myself, and for our future—to earn his acceptance.”
Gu Chiyan felt both warm and sweet inside. He wanted to say something, but didn’t know what to say, so he silently made a vow in his heart:
In this lifetime, I will never let Little Su down.
Then Su He added,
“Chiyan, it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to visit empty-handed the first time. Let’s go to the department store this afternoon.”
Gu Chiyan nodded.
“Alright.”
She doesn’t have much savings—I’ll pay when the time comes.
Su He asked about his family’s preferences. Gu Chiyan looked a little awkward.
“Little Su, I… I haven’t really paid attention to that. And there are so many people at home—you don’t need to prepare gifts for each one. Just buy some sweets or pastries.”
Su He thought to herself:
You silly deer!
This is my first time visiting the Gu family—I have to establish my image properly.
The old traditionalist will be hard to deal with, so I’ll start with the people around him. Win over as many as possible!
Once he’s surrounded, whether he accepts me or not won’t be up to him!
After lunch, Gu Chiyan rode his bicycle, taking Su He to the department store.
On the way, he accidentally ran over a small stone, jolting the bike. Su He took the opportunity to wrap her arms around his waist.
On the way there, she had only modestly held onto the edge of his clothes—now she finally got her chance to take advantage.
She hugged him for a brief moment, then quickly let go as if shocked.
Doesn’t look like much muscle, but it’s firm… nice feel!
Gu Chiyan nearly lost control of the bike and veered into a ditch!
For the rest of the ride, he was torn between two thoughts:
One part of him wanted to ride over more stones and bumps—so Little Su would hold his waist again.
The other part felt that would be underhanded. If Little Su saw through it, she’d definitely think he had no moral character!
Before he could resolve his internal struggle, they arrived at the department store.
His disappointment was indescribable.
After locking the bike, they entered.
There were several department stores in the capital, but this one was the largest.
It was packed with people, with long lines at many counters.
Su He figured that if they followed the normal process, the store would close before she could finish shopping.
So she said to Gu Chiyan,
“Chiyan, wait here for a moment. I need to take care of something over there.”
Gu Chiyan obediently nodded without even asking why.
“Okay.”
Su He strolled over to the porcelain counter. Just like in Shanghai, high-end porcelain here didn’t attract much attention.
She glanced at the sales clerk’s name badge.
“Sister Lu, do you remember me? It’s Little Su!”
Lu Yarong looked confused. Little Su? Which Little Su?
Su He smiled brightly.
“Sister Lu, looks like you’ve forgotten! Section Chief Bao from the Supply and Marketing Company is my uncle. I came here with him once, and you even introduced porcelain to me!”
Though Lu Yarong had no recollection at all, hearing that she was related to Section Chief Bao immediately brought a smile to her face.
“Oh, Little Su! My memory really is bad. Are you here to buy something?”
Su He nodded.
“Yes, I want to buy a set of porcelain as a gift for an elder. Could you recommend something?”
Lu Yarong enthusiastically began introducing items. Su He chose a set of blue-and-white porcelain.
Perfect gift—practical! Every time they eat, they’ll think of me!
Lu Yarong even gave her an internal discount and didn’t require ration coupons.
Su He then tactfully mentioned she wanted to buy other items but that the crowds were overwhelming.
Lu Yarong had her write a list, then went behind the counters and helped her gather everything through connections with other clerks.
There were too many items for Su He to carry alone.
She waved at Gu Chiyan in the distance.
He had actually been watching her the whole time, though he couldn’t hear what she was saying.
Seeing her signal, he jogged over.
“Little Su, is this your boyfriend? What a fine young man! You two are truly a perfect match!”
Lu Yarong thought to herself:
Some people are just born lucky.
Take Little Su—her uncle is a section chief, so her family must be well-off, and she’s found such an excellent boyfriend. No comparison!
Su He shyly nodded and asked Gu Chiyan to help carry the items.
Gu Chiyan: “……”
She didn’t even go anywhere—where did all this stuff come from?
Still, he didn’t ask. He picked up the heavier items, leaving only the lighter ones for Su He.
Before leaving, Su He gifted Lu Yarong a bottle of foreign perfume.
Lu Yarong was delighted.
As expected of Section Chief Bao’s niece—so generous!
With arms full of packages, Su He and Gu Chiyan left the store.
Only then did he ask what had happened.
Su He didn’t hide anything and explained everything honestly.
They were already in a relationship—she couldn’t keep acting docile forever. He needed to see a bit of her true nature.
Gu Chiyan: “…That works?”
If anyone else had done this, he would have criticized them for opportunism.
But since it was Su He, his only thought was:
Little Su is so clever!
He took out his wallet, emptied all the money, and handed it to her.
“Little Su, I haven’t visited Elder Ge in a while. When you have time, could you help me buy him some supplements?”
Su He knew Elder Ge was just an excuse—this money was for her.
For once, she felt a little embarrassed and tried to refuse.
But Gu Chiyan insisted firmly.
With people coming and going around them, she had no choice but to accept.
Fine, I’ll just keep it safe for him.
Since there were too many items, Su He hired a tricycle.
Gu Chiyan insisted on escorting her back to the guesthouse.
After agreeing on a time to meet the next day, he reluctantly rode off.
When Su He was with him, cycling felt effortless.
Now, each pedal felt like it weighed a thousand pounds.
Even so, he made his way back to the Gu residence.
Seeing him return, Old Master Gu clasped his hands behind his back and headed to the study.
So far, only the two of them knew about Su He.
“Grandpa, Little Su agreed to come tomorrow morning. You’re the elder—please don’t make things difficult for her.”
Old Master Gu took a sip of tea.
“Chiyan, I’m not going to make things hard for a young girl. I just want to talk to her personally. If she’s truly a good girl, then matters like family background can be more flexible.”
Gu Chiyan didn’t believe him at all.
But sooner or later, they would have to meet—it couldn’t be avoided.
Little Su is such an outstanding girl. Grandpa will definitely like her.
