Chapter 257: A Hundred Times Better Than Su He
By the time Su He reached the scene, the child had already been pulled out of the water by an elderly man.
However, the little boy’s face was bluish, and he seemed to have stopped breathing.
His grandmother was clutching him and wailing, refusing to let anyone else come near.
Su He frowned and pointed at several men nearby.
“You—pull her aside! Don’t delay the rescue!”
The men actually listened. After some tugging and dragging, they managed to move the old woman away.
Su He immediately joined others in first aid. After draining the water, they began CPR.
Finally, the boy came back to life.
The grandmother hugged him and burst into tears, even trying to kneel and kowtow in gratitude.
Su He stopped her.
“No need to thank us. Take him to the hospital for a checkup right away. And remember—don’t bring him to play near lakes or rivers again.”
The old woman thanked them repeatedly and left with the child.
Noticing a park staff member wearing an armband, Su He said:
“Comrade, I have a suggestion. Could you set up more warning signs along the lakeside? It would also help to have life buoys and other emergency equipment, and arrange regular patrols.
Rescue might be manageable in summer, but if someone falls through ice in winter, it could be disastrous…”
The staff member looked troubled.
“Your suggestion is good, but I don’t have the authority. Still, don’t worry—I’ll definitely report it to my superiors.”
Su He knew he was telling the truth. Safety awareness was still lacking in many places.
Maybe I should write an article on safety education…
After giving a few more reminders, she left the park—her clothes had gotten wet during the rescue—and returned to the guesthouse.
Meanwhile, the elderly man who had saved the child was now accompanied by two men in their thirties.
The one on his right, Zhang Yongsheng, muttered anxiously:
“Chief, you really don’t take your own safety seriously! If something had happened, I’d be responsible!”
The old man waved him off impatiently.
“Enough, stop nagging. What’s the big deal? I’m just an ordinary citizen!
Look at that young girl—kind-hearted and methodical.
Go inform the park management later and have them follow her suggestions.”
The old man was none other than Old Master Gu.
He had come to the park to relax, only to end up becoming a hero.
Even after getting back into his jeep, he kept praising the girl.
Zhang Yongsheng adjusted his glasses and said,
“Chief, should I have someone find out more about her? Chi Yan happens to be single…”
He trailed off halfway.
He had almost forgotten—his chief cared deeply about family background. No matter how well-dressed that girl was, her background likely wouldn’t meet his standards.
Still, his words reminded Old Master Gu of something troubling.
Look at that girl—she’s a hundred times better than that Su He!
Why is my foolish grandson so infatuated with that “white-bone spirit”?
As soon as he got home, Old Master Gu called Gu Chiyan.
“Chiyan, contact Su He immediately. Bring her to meet me the day after tomorrow at the latest!”
Gu Chiyan gave vague affirmations, thinking to himself:
That’s not up to you—it depends on whether Little Su agrees.
The next morning, Director Tian stood by the window and spotted Gu Chiyan downstairs, standing stiffly like a wooden post.
He smacked his lips.
“That kid… did he come in the middle of the night?”
So devoted!
This girl Su He—not only is she good at work, she’s also quite skilled in relationships!
He called out to Principal Chen,
“Old Chen, come take a look!”
Principal Chen glanced over and was speechless.
Still, being the more considerate one, he knocked on Su He’s door to let her know Gu Chiyan had arrived.
Su He yawned.
“This Chiyan has no sense of time! We agreed to meet at 8:30—why come so early?!
I haven’t even woken up yet! Honestly, so troublesome…”
Principal Chen: “……”
“Su He, even the best kite flyer sometimes loses control of the string. You should tone it down a bit. Besides, Little Gu is a sincere young man—don’t bully him too much.”
Su He: “……”
I didn’t even say anything! And why are you siding with an outsider?!
“Principal, I haven’t even washed my face yet. How about you and Director Tian go chat with him for a bit?”
Principal Chen nodded and went downstairs with Director Tian.
Without Su He present, Gu Chiyan handled the conversation with ease, leaving both old men with an even better impression of him.
If not for their strong bias toward Su He, they might have thought she was the one marrying up!
A full half hour later, Su He finally came running down, slightly out of breath.
“Chiyan, have you been waiting long?
The more I rushed, the more things went wrong—I knocked over the washbasin, put my clothes on backwards… that’s why I’m so late…”
Principal Chen & Director Tian: “……”
That mouth of hers—nothing but lies!
But Gu Chiyan completely bought it. His heart felt sweet.
She’s explaining so anxiously—she must be worried I’d be upset.
That means I matter a lot to her!
He avoided looking at her, stammering slightly,
“I-it’s fine. I was just chatting with the two elders.”
Director Tian sighed inwardly.
Such a good kid… too bad he fell straight into Su He’s trap.
Since Su He and the others hadn’t eaten yet, Gu Chiyan took them to a nearby state-run restaurant.
They had meat buns, millet porridge, and some pickled vegetables.
Both physically and mentally, it felt very satisfying.
Principal Chen and Director Tian tactfully excused themselves after breakfast and returned to the guesthouse.
Gu Chiyan then rode his bicycle, taking Su He to… the farthest scenic spot from the guesthouse.
The journey alone took over an hour.
And that was only because Su He made him switch to a closer destination halfway—otherwise, they might not have arrived until afternoon!
She felt tired just watching him.
But Gu Chiyan enjoyed every moment.
The longer the journey, the more time they could spend together.
Even without talking, just knowing the girl he liked was sitting behind him gave him endless energy.
One hour? No problem.
Even pedaling from dawn till dusk would be fine!
At the scenic spot, the two strolled leisurely.
Su He glanced at Gu Chiyan’s long fingers, feeling a slight urge… but restrained herself so as not to scare him off.
After walking for a while, they sat down to rest.
Gu Chiyan said,
“Little Su, my grandfather wants to meet you. He asked me to invite you to our home.”
He paused before continuing,
“My grandfather is a bit traditional and cares a lot about family background. But don’t worry—that’s just his opinion. I don’t care about that at all.
I originally planned to persuade him first before inviting you, so he wouldn’t say anything hurtful.
Logically, I shouldn’t even tell you this. But I know you’re… different. You might have your own thoughts, so I decided to tell you.
Whatever decision you make, I’ll fully support you.”
Su He thought to herself:
For someone who usually stutters when talking to me, he sure knows what to say when it counts.
Go or not?
Of course she’d go.
Traditional or not didn’t matter.
As long as there was enough to gain—
Even if he were a mummy, she’d call him Grandpa!
