Chapter 15: You Guys Should Thank Comrade Xu Hui!
The interview ended, and the admission list was announced on the spot.
Lin Wan, Xu Hui, Wu Xue, Ma Yumei, Luo Jiahui, Zhao Weiguo, Wang Chaoying, Lin Xiaobing, Zhou Xingbang, Hu Guangrong.
Only ten people were recruited this time, and six of the slots had been predetermined. After all, they still had to leave a few spots for the children of the internal staff; otherwise, it would cause trouble if the grassroots workers created a fuss.
However, because Xu Hui took the lead in making a scene, four of the six predetermined candidates were eliminated!!!
Luo Jiahui went up to Lin Wan in excitement to express her gratitude. “Thank you, Comrade Lin Wan…”
Lin Wan immediately waved her hand. “Hold it right there!”
“Comrade Luo Jiahui, the one you should thank is Comrade Xu Hui!”
“If Comrade Xu Hui hadn’t insisted on digging up the root of the matter to make everyone prove the authenticity of the exam, Bureau Chief Zhao wouldn’t have felt pressured by her to hold the interviews. If he hadn’t, even if Bureau Chief Zhao grew mouths all over his body, he wouldn’t have been able to explain himself!”
“So, you guys must give Comrade Xu Hui a proper thank you. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have had the chance to be interviewed, let alone substitute for those slots.”
“Your only option would have been to go down to the countryside, sweating profusely and shining your light in the vast rural fields…”
Lin Wan looked at the exasperated Xu Hui with a half-smile, sneering in her heart.
Look at you!
Trying to mess with me!
Guo Xuyang and Zhang Qin were already married. Zhang Qin wouldn’t be going to the countryside, and Guo Xuyang no longer had a reason to seek revenge on her and the Zhang family! Therefore, why the hell should she be afraid of Xu Hui, the original female lead?
Even if she was supposed to be afraid, with Xu Hui harboring such bizarre, inexplicable hostility toward her, would backing down really solve anything?
Roll up your sleeves and just do it. Fight to the end. Truth comes from the fist, and political power grows out of the barrel of a gun!
Luo Jiahui was a straightforward girl. She quickly grabbed Xu Hui’s hand and expressed her passionate gratitude, “Thank you, Comrade Xu Hui! Let me treat you to a meal!”
“Thank you so, so much. Comrade Lin Wan is absolutely right. If you hadn’t spoken out righteously, I really would have had to go down to the countryside!”
The others also came over one after another to thank Xu Hui.
While some people were over the moon because they secured a job and avoided the countryside, the four who lost their jobs and now faced being sent down wished they could murder Xu Hui.
Crucially, those four were all relatives of the leadership. Xu Hui’s action had also dragged her third uncle into offending his superiors.
In particular, Comrade Su Hongwei, the third-place candidate who was eliminated during the interview, was the biological nephew of Deputy Bureau Chief Su—the son of the Deputy Bureau Chief’s eldest brother.
Once the list was posted, the unit issued certifications for them. With these documents, they could go transfer their household registration to the unit’s collective registry. This would make things much more convenient when housing was allocated in the future based on seniority.
At the same time, they were told to report with their documents next Monday, September 2nd.
Lin Wan took her various certification documents and left the Huacheng Post Office in a blissful mood.
Meanwhile, Xu Hui was called into the office by Director Xu. The moment the door slammed shut, he gave her a ferocious tongue-lashing.
Director Xu was absolutely infuriated by this niece of his. “I shouldn’t have bothered with you!”
“Lin Wan managed to score first place. Is she someone you can just pick a fight with?”
“She’s someone from an external unit, yet she comes in and takes first place right off the bat. Didn’t you stop to think about what kind of backing that represents?”
“Aren’t you the clever one! Fine, so you noticed it, but why the hell did you have to go pick a fight with her?”
“Did you have nothing better to do?!”
“I’m asking you a question!”
“You made a fool of yourself. She got to stay, and you got to stay too, but Deputy Bureau Chief Su’s nephew was eliminated!”
“And then there’s Section Chief Jiang from the general affairs section, and Chief Huang from the telecommunications section…”
Xu Hui wept in pure grievance. She hadn’t expected Lin Wan to blow things up to this extent, nor had she expected Bureau Chief Zhao to introduce an interview stage.
She felt as if she were possessed. The moment she saw Lin Wan, she felt incredibly uncomfortable, but what disturbed her more was a secret wave of unease churning deep in her heart.
“Did she offend you before?”
“Did you two know each other from before?” Director Xu asked in rapid succession, his anger flaring as he looked at Xu Hui, who could do nothing but bury her head and cry.
Xu Hui shook her head through her tears. “I don’t know her!”
Director Xu nearly flipped backward in rage. He pointed at Xu Hui, entirely at a loss for words. “Get out, get out, get out! Get the hell out of here!”
“Go back and tell your parents to prepare four sets of gifts. Tonight, you’re coming with me to apologize door-to-door to every single one of them!”
“Also, get ready to give up your job slot to Su Hongwei!”
Xu Hui was utterly stunned. It was a job she had tested into fairly—on what grounds should she hand it over to someone else?
Director Xu was incredibly irritated. “Why are you glaring at me? Isn’t the current situation entirely a disaster of your own making?”
Xu Hui ran out crying.
Her third uncle was simply too much. His mind held nothing but his own position, constantly thinking about flattery. He was even willing to throw away her future just to suck up to his superiors!
Did he not consider that if she gave up this job, she would have to go down to the countryside! What kind of life was it in the rural areas? Not enough food to eat, not enough clothes to keep warm, and an endless mountain of chores from morning till night. Furthermore, her household registration would be transferred to the countryside, turning her from a city dweller into a peasant!
The more Xu Hui thought about it, the more sorrowful she became, weeping as if her heart were breaking.
She ran all the way to Yanshixiang.
A greasy-looking man with a face like a rat blocked her path. “Huigui, why are you crying?”
He reached out, trying to grab Xu Hui’s hand.
“Tell big brother, who bullied you? Big brother will teach them a lesson for you!”
As he spoke, he began pulling Xu Hui into his arms, getting entirely handsy.
Xu Hui thrashed in terror. “Let go of me!”
Seeing that there was no one around, Luo Yong’s malicious impulses flared. He muffled her mouth and dragged her toward a secluded, deserted alley nearby.
“Huigui, save your voice. In a bit, big brother will let you scream all you want!”
Luo Yong’s tiny, rat-like eyes gleamed with lustful light. As he dragged Xu Hui, he didn’t forget to plant a wet kiss on her face.
Xu Hui felt as though she were entangled by a slimy snake. The physical contact made her skin crawl with revulsion and horror. But more than anything, she was terrified.
“Huigui, look at you, always stringing me along like I’m an absolute fool!”
“Why don’t we just make the deed official? Once the rice is cooked, we’ll go get our certificate.”
“Once the certificate is registered, I won’t have to go to the countryside. Then you can transfer your job to me. I’ll go to work and bear the hardships, while you stay home and enjoy yourself!”
The more Luo Yong spoke, the more excited he became, and the movements of his hands grew increasingly rough. Because Xu Hui was struggling too violently, he swung his hand and delivered two sharp slaps to her face, telling her to behave.
Right as he was yanking at her trousers…
A violent surge of pain struck the back of his head.
His vision went black, and his head crashed heavily onto Xu Hui’s chest.
In her state of despair, Xu Hui gasped from the sharp pain. Her chest was practically smashed flat! Anyone who had been struck like that would know how excruciating it felt.
Ignoring the pain, she scrambled up in a panic, clutching her chest as she retreated into a corner. She watched as Lin Wan squatted down and used a finger to check Luo Yong’s breathing.
It was Lin Wan. Lin Wan had used a stone to knock Luo Yong unconscious.
“Still breathing.” Lin Wan let out a sigh of relief. She was also afraid of accidentally beating someone to death.
“Are you reporting this?” Lin Wan asked Xu Hui, who was currently trembling like a terrified quail.
Shaking violently as she wrapped her arms around herself, Xu Hui hurled an accusation full of immense loathing at Lin Wan. “Lin Wan, would you actually be kind-hearted enough to save me?”
“You and Luo Yong are in league together!”
“You set this up!”
“Don’t think that doing this will make me forgive you…”
Lin Wan rolled her eyes aggressively. “Fine, go ahead and report it then. If you won’t, I will!”
Just as she finished speaking, a staggering figure tumbled over the low wall at the end of the alley.
It was Guo Xuyang.
Looking at his state, it was clear at a single glance that he had been drugged.
Lin Wan’s lips twitched.
She had actually called it—the world’s narrative will was forcefully steering the plot back on track.
Thank goodness she was cautious enough. She had rushed over just in time to patch the plot holes.
