She hadn’t really eaten much at the dining table earlier; her eyes had been glued to Huo Xiao the entire time, terrified he would say the wrong thing.

He set down the enamel mug and lightly patted his thigh.
Lin Wan subconsciously climbed right onto his lap, wrapping both arms around his neck. She tilted her small face upward and planted a kiss directly onto the lips that were inches away.

Warm.
Completely different from his cold and rigid exterior.
Except his lips were pressed together tightly.
A sudden wave of numbness instantly surged through her limbs and bones, and Lin Wan grew even hotter.
She whined softly. Becoming impatient when she couldn’t kiss Huo Xiao’s lips open, she lost her temper.
She nipped right down on Huo Xiao’s Adam’s apple, grinding her teeth as if venting her frustration.

As her eyes locked with Huo Xiao’s, the fierce heat raging through her body made her realize her situation instantly.
She also cast a glance at the completely empty bowl, a stampede of ten thousand curses charging back and forth through her mind.

With that, he delivered a swift hand-chop to the back of her neck to knock Lin Wan unconscious, then scooped her up in a bridal carry and walked out.
He swung the door open, causing Huang Guixiang—who had been pressed against the door eavesdropping—to stumble right into Lin Wan.
Seeing Lin Wan passed out in Huo Xiao’s arms…
She was utterly flabbergasted.

The strings in Huang Guixiang’s brain snapped.
Her head buzzed.
“Auntie, Comrade Lin Wan fainted. She needs to be taken to the hospital.” With that, Huo Xiao strode outside with long, rapid steps.

Before they could even finish their shouting match, Lin Wan had already been rushed to the hospital by Huo Xiao.
The moment Huang Guixiang stepped out of the car, she leaned against the wall and threw up. Huo Xiao had driven far too fast, leaving her completely dizzy and car-sick.
The doctor performed an examination on Lin Wan. Huo Xiao claimed she had eaten poisonous mushrooms, so the doctor urgently pumped Lin Wan’s stomach and drew blood for tests.
He couldn’t possibly say it was an aphrodisiac.
If word got out, Lin Wan’s reputation would be utterly ruined. In this day and age, issues regarding moral conduct were extremely severe and the easiest thing for people to seize upon to create trouble.
It could literally cost a life.
After all that frantic tossing and turning, Lin Wan finally woke up after being wheeled into the ward with an IV drip hooked up to her arm.
She locked eyes with Huang Guixiang’s anxious, worried gaze.
“Wanwan, you’re awake! How are you feeling?”
Lin Wan weakly scanned her surroundings. Not seeing Huo Xiao anywhere and noting that there were no other patients in the ward, she let out a massive sigh of relief in her heart.
“Mom, where’s Huo Xiao?”
Huang Guixiang replied, “He went to pay the fees!”
“The doctor said you can go home once the IV fluid is finished!”
“No, what on earth happened to you?”
“Why did you eat the brown sugar eggs yourself?”
“What is Huo Xiao playing at? Is he trying to back out of the marriage?”
“Should we switch back to looking for Guo Xuyang then?”
“Oh my, what a colossal mess… there are barely any days left before you have to go to the countryside!”
Huang Guixiang was anxious beyond belief.
Lin Wan felt utterly dejected. “Mom, you didn’t even drop me a hint! How was I supposed to know there was a problem with the brown sugar eggs?”
“Huo Xiao can’t drink alcohol, nor can he eat anything containing alcohol.”
“You made them taste so delicious that I just couldn’t resist!”
Terrified that Huang Guixiang would make another terrible blunder, she added, “Mom, I only like Huo Xiao, and he likes me too. This marriage isn’t going to fall through!”
