Chapter 36: Snatching a Life
She didn’t know who the person hiding in the dark and shooting at her was, but they were clearly out for her life.
To fire more rounds before the police arrived, the attacker had even equipped the gun with a silencer.
Xu Youyou carefully recalled her time in New York — she had only truly offended two people: Cyril, because of Lu Jingyao; and Denar, after she ruined his porcelain scam.
[Snatch mission has begun. Host, please reach the designated location as soon as possible.]
Xu Youyou: ?
“System, I have to do a snatch mission at a time like this?” she asked.
[Snatch target: One life. No special rewards for completing this mission.]
Xu Youyou immediately changed her expression like a Sichuan opera performer: “System, I knew you were the best system in the world!”
As the gunfire continued, Xu Youyou followed the system’s instructions almost perfectly.
Meanwhile, the sniper hiding not far away frowned deeply. “You told me to kill an ordinary person.”
The man beside him was sweating profusely. “Just a little Chinese girl… Who would’ve thought she could move so fast?”
“Does she know kung fu?” the sniper said coldly. “I’m doing my best here. And even if I don’t hit her, you still owe me the rest of the payment.”
From their view, Xu Youyou was moving as agilely as a monkey, always one step ahead of the bullets.
Not a scratch on her, but the unlucky people who had been besieging her earlier were now in trouble. Under the hail of bullets, many of them got hit and were now lying on the ground, wailing.
“Help me! Save me!”
“I don’t want to die!”
Finally, the shooting stopped.
Xu Youyou didn’t know the sniper had emptied his magazine. She still hid in a blind spot, too afraid to move.
After a long time, ambulances arrived, and there were no more gunshots.
Xu Youyou was unscathed, but among the three bodyguards she had brought, one local bodyguard had been shot in the shoulder.
The wounded were taken to the hospital, while the rest were brought to the police station.
Although her local bodyguard was armed, he hadn’t fired a single shot, and Xu Youyou had only dodged throughout the incident. After giving her statement, she was released.
“Are shootings common here?” Xu Youyou asked her local driver.
The driver shook his head. “Not that often. Maybe once a month.”
Xu Youyou fell silent. Once a month was not considered often?
The driver, looking seasoned, said, “Miss Xu, I won’t be driving you tomorrow. You’ve clearly made enemies. Those bullets were chasing you.”
After this experience, Xu Youyou no longer dared to stay in New York.
She debated whether she should immediately book a flight home instead of staying to complete more snatch missions.
[Snatch mission has begun. Host, please reach the target location (the destination is nearby, and you may walk there).]
Xu Youyou stared at the system notification. Hadn’t it only been a couple of hours since the last snatch mission?
Oh right, the last mission was about snatching back her own life. Guess that didn’t count.
Though she wanted badly to return to China, seeing the new mission made her hesitate.
After leaving the police station, she and her two bodyguards followed the system’s guidance through the streets of New York.
She was gambling — betting that after just one assassination attempt, the mastermind wouldn’t try again so soon.
She believed the system when it said the destination was “nearby” — but she ended up trekking five kilometers nonstop.
Finally, the system led her to a dead-end alley.
The two bodyguards following her didn’t understand what she was doing, but said nothing.
Xu Youyou hesitated as she approached the end of the alley, where a foul-smelling trash bin sat.
“We’re rummaging through garbage again?” she asked the system.
The system’s pointer jabbed straight into the trash bin.
Xu Youyou felt her “garbage collector” persona was getting heavier.
But with two people around, she simply said, “Five hundred bucks more if you empty that trash bin.”
The bodyguards, used to tough jobs, showed no change of expression. Compared to other employers, Xu Youyou was low-maintenance. They lifted the trash bin without complaint.
A heavy thud sounded as something fell out.
The top layer was kitchen waste — spoiled, rotting food. But at the bottom was a heavy object wrapped in a burlap sack.
Blood stains seeped through the sack.
One bodyguard reached out and touched it. His expression changed instantly. “It’s a person!”
A corpse?
Xu Youyou instinctively stumbled two steps back.
Fighting her urge to flee, she ordered the bodyguards to open the sack.
Inside was a man with short black hair and Chinese features.
When the bodyguard turned him over, he gasped, “Miss Xu, it’s Mr. Lu! He’s still breathing!”
Xu Youyou: …
Looking at Lu Jingyao — covered in blood, unconscious, half-stuffed into a sack — it was hard for Xu Youyou to associate him with the dazzling, sun-like figure he had been just days ago.
What was this? A golden sun turned into a trash-bin rat?
Xu Youyou was terrified. “Was he murdered and dumped? Thrown into the trash, no phone, no tracker — no wonder his people couldn’t find him.”
The bodyguard sighed. “It’s really dangerous overseas. Miss Xu, if you’re staying longer, you should hire more local bodyguards.”
After accompanying Lu Jingyao to the hospital and explaining everything to his subordinates, Xu Youyou didn’t get involved any further.
When she left, Lu Jingyao was still unconscious, lying in the ICU with tubes all over him.
[Congratulations, Host. Snatch mission completed. Specific rewards will be provided by the mission target.]
Xu Youyou didn’t argue with the system. Lu Jingyao was rich — saving his life would surely earn her a nice reward.
“Go home! I’m going home immediately!” Xu Youyou rushed to her hotel and booked the next flight. The nearest one was in three hours — she couldn’t wait to flee.
Song’s mother, having mostly recovered, chose to return to China with Xu Youyou and her son.
Since Song’s mother was in decent health, Xu Youyou didn’t splurge on a private jet. She simply bought first-class tickets for everyone.
But the moment she boarded the plane and barely lay down, the system chimed again.
[Snatch mission has begun. Host, please reach the target location as soon as possible.]
Just a few days ago, Xu Youyou had wished for more snatch missions, but after everything that had happened, she was exhausted by the constant flood of missions.
“Can I rest first? Let me sleep for a bit, okay?” she begged.
But the system responded only with flashing red lights.
[Snatch mission has begun. Host, please reach the target location as soon as possible.]
The same line kept flashing in her vision, making it clear: it wasn’t going to stop unless she acted.
