Chapter 319: Grand
Xu Youyou didn’t hesitate for a second. She grabbed Lu Jingyao and, pulling him along, ran toward the direction where the golden pointer was.
Before they could reach it, gunshots rang out from behind.
Lu Jingyao felt the bullet whizz right past his ear — the sound was way too close.
He and Xu Youyou couldn’t help but glance at the tall building in that direction.
“Stay close to me!” Xu Youyou said.
The golden pointer on the ground shifted direction. Xu Youyou dragged Lu Jingyao a few steps to the left.
The next gunshot exploded right by their ears again, but they remained unscathed.
After several shots, the golden pointer disappeared from the ground.
Xu Youyou tensed up. Without the system’s guidance, how was she supposed to dodge a sniper’s bullets?
Lu Jingyao suddenly tugged her hand. “Don’t be scared, it’s over.”
Xu Youyou looked at him in surprise — just in time to see two bodyguards running down from the unfinished building.
“Boss, the sniper heard the commotion and fled. He was too fast — we didn’t catch him,” the bodyguard said, full of guilt.
Only then did Xu Youyou realize that their team had gone to catch the sniper. Even though they didn’t manage to catch him, they’d at least forced him to run. She turned around and saw the other bodyguards, all highly trained, had already subdued the troublemakers with cold weapons.
“Should we send these people to the police station?” Assistant Liu asked.
Lu Jingyao looked at Xu Youyou.
“Will the Tokyo police even punish them?” Xu Youyou asked.
Lu Jingyao shook his head. “They’ll probably just lock them up for a few days as a formality and then let them go. After all, this is the Yasuda family’s turf — they won’t really do anything to them.”
Xu Youyou said, “Then tie them up and leave them by the roadside.”
Lu Jingyao nodded. At that moment, another car arranged by Xu Fang arrived early. They crossed through the multi-car crash site, got in the car, and safely made it to the airport.
It was only after they boarded the plane that Xu Youyou finally relaxed.
“You…” Lu Jingyao hesitated, unsure if he should speak.
“If you have something to ask, just ask,” Xu Youyou said.
“Can you dodge bullets?”
Xu Youyou didn’t know where to start, but she couldn’t mention the system.
There had only been one sniper.
The sniper was aiming at her. She had been holding onto Lu Jingyao to dodge because she was afraid he might get hit by accident.
The others weren’t targeted by the sniper, and the enemies with cold weapons weren’t very strong, so they only had minor scrapes, nothing serious.
“Sometimes I can dodge,” Xu Youyou said truthfully, though it wasn’t much of an explanation.
But Lu Jingyao caught on to her attitude and said, “Even being able to dodge sometimes is already way better than us regular folks.”
During the whole flight, Lu Jingyao didn’t press further. When Xu Youyou’s plane landed back in Hucheng, it was already dusk with the city lights coming on.
They didn’t linger at the airport at all, rushing straight home.
In the afternoon they were dodging bullets in Tokyo, and by evening, they were back in Hucheng — exhausted beyond words.
But as their car passed the Bund, a giant screen suddenly lit up with a flurry of pink flowers, which quickly morphed into a proposal scene.
Thousands of drones rose into the sky, forming the shape of a face.
Xu Youyou widened her eyes. Am I seeing things? she thought. How come I’m seeing my own face up there?
Her face flashed across the sky, then transformed into a massive sea of roses.
She turned to look at Lu Jingyao.
Just then, the car drove into Tomson Riviera.
Both sides of the road were lined with seas of roses, and even the streetlights were wrapped in flowers. Light, cheerful music floated in the air.
In the mingling scents of flowers and music, Xu Youyou’s heart gradually calmed, and she realized what was about to happen.
After getting out of the car, Lu Jingyao reached out his hand and led her straight to the rooftop via the elevator.
Xu Youyou didn’t know what the rooftop had been used for before, but now it was completely covered in flowers, stunning her into silence.
“Proposing with flowers might be a bit cliché. Forgive me for not being creative enough. I can only express my most ordinary love for you in this most familiar way,” Lu Jingyao said softly.
Xu Youyou’s nose stung with emotion. She didn’t know how long Lu Jingyao had been planning this grand proposal. No wonder during those days in Tokyo, he had been sneaking off to make calls every day, and Assistant Liu kept giving her envious looks.
Suddenly, fireworks burst across the sky.
In front of her, Lu Jingyao knelt on one knee and asked her the big question.
“I do,” Xu Youyou replied softly.
Their first meeting had been ordinary, and they had gone through quite a few misunderstandings, but after more than two years together, even the pickiest Xu Youyou couldn’t find anything bad to say about him.
After all, Lu Jingyao had an incredible ability to learn. Once a proud man who looked down on everyone, he now lowered his head in front of her. Just a slight frown from Xu Youyou, and he immediately knew how to comfort her.
No matter how wealthy she was, Xu Youyou couldn’t think of anyone who could treat her more sincerely.
Lu Jingyao placed the engagement ring on her finger. It wasn’t an exaggeratedly large diamond. In fact, compared to Lu Jingyao’s net worth, the few-carat diamond seemed almost stingy.
Lu Jingyao said softly, “You don’t usually like wearing bracelets or bangles, you don’t like anything weighing down your hands, so I didn’t buy a big ring. I just hope you’ll wear it every day.”
Xu Youyou smiled and said, “That’s very thoughtful.”
Xu Fang, standing off to the side, wanted to speak but held back. In her mind, which was much more worldly than her boss’s, she thought, What woman doesn’t like a big diamond ring? Wasn’t it just because the man was unwilling to spend?
But the next second, Assistant Liu handed over a document and a pen to Xu Youyou.
“Miss Xu, our boss prepared this a long time ago. Just waiting for your signature now.”
Xu Youyou opened it and froze when she saw it was a share transfer agreement.
“You’re transferring half your shares to me? Will your parents agree?” Xu Youyou couldn’t help but ask.
Lu Jingyao wasn’t giving her some small company, but half of his shares in the Lu Corporation.
The Lu Corporation hadn’t gone public. It was operating extremely well and was asset-rich. If calculated carefully, the shares Xu Youyou would receive upon signing were worth at least hundreds of billions.
She was just a signature away from doubling her own wealth.
Lu Jingyao said, “I only own 40% of Lu Corporation’s shares. The rest are in my grandfather’s and parents’ hands. I’m giving you half of what I have — consider it a proposal gift. I hope you don’t find it too little.”
Xu Youyou immediately said, “I can’t accept it.”
Lu Jingyao lowered his head, looking at her, and said softly, “Forgive my shallowness — besides money, I don’t know how else to prove my love for you.”
