Chapter 294: Mission Completed?
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone present almost laughed. After all, this wasn’t some drama series.
The police, who had already barged in without finding anything, were ready to leave. One of them said, “Strictly speaking, we don’t have a search warrant. Earlier, we could say it was an emergency, but if we start digging up someone’s yard now, it would be hard to justify.”
The police had their own helplessness too.
The two bodyguards exchanged a look, both frantically trying to come up with a solution. Luckily, their phone call hadn’t been disconnected, and the police dog beside them was still barking.
Suddenly, Xu Youyou’s voice came through the phone, “I can’t hear the dog clearly. Bring the phone closer so I can listen.”
Although the bodyguards didn’t understand Xu Youyou’s odd request, they firmly obeyed.
They brought the phone closer to the dog, and now Xu Youyou could clearly hear what the dog was saying.
“Woof woof! There’s definitely something hidden under the rose bushes! It smells terrible! It’s the stench of a corpse!” the dog barked.
When the phone was brought back to the bodyguard’s ear, he heard Xu Youyou’s firm voice.
“Find a way to dig up the rose bushes. I’m 90% sure there’s a body buried underneath,” Xu Youyou said.
The two bodyguards, who had joined the army together and retired together, only needed a glance to understand each other. Having worked with Xu Youyou for so long, they knew she might be young, but she never made mistakes.
One of the bodyguards suddenly rushed into the nearby greenhouse.
The police hurriedly shouted, “What are you doing? Are you planning to rob or steal right in front of us?”
The other bodyguard stretched out his arms to block the two officers. When his buddy came running out holding a hoe, he braced himself and said, “My friend has a nose even keener than a dog’s. He really thinks there’s a body under the rose bushes. Just let him dig. It’ll only take a little time. If there’s really a murder case hidden here and we miss it, wouldn’t that be a grave injustice?”
The two officers watched as the bodyguard simply started digging up the rose bushes without any suspicious actions. After a moment’s thought, they actually didn’t stop him. Instead, they quietly turned away, pretending to admire the scenery.
The bodyguard struck the soft soil with the hoe, and digging proved to be surprisingly easy.
In less than twenty minutes, the hoe hit something unusual.
“We found something!” the bodyguard shouted.
The police rushed over immediately.
It was a corpse wrapped in waterproof cloth.
Judging by the condition, the body hadn’t been buried for too long. It looked like an elderly man.
“This seems to be… Zhang Boyuan… the owner of this house. I’ve seen him wear these clothes before,” one of the officers said.
Zhang Boyuan was known for being stingy and eccentric. He had lived on Lamma Island for years, and the island wasn’t that big. The officer remembered him clearly because he once handled a dispute between Zhang Boyuan and a grocery store owner on the island.
Zhang Boyuan’s stubborn personality had left a deep impression.
“But there are still signs of recent activity inside the house. This body must have been dead for at least a week,” another officer noted.
The bodyguard who had found the body quickly suggested, “Is there any surveillance on the island, or records of who came and went? You could check who recently entered this house and who tried to fake signs of living here.”
The officers nodded, and the two bodyguards were taken to the police station to give statements.
Although their behavior was a bit strange, their movements were well-documented. They insisted that it was because of their keen sense of smell and their upright nature. After showing their military discharge certificates, any suspicion around them was quickly dismissed.
Even though they had uncovered a hidden murder case, Xu Youyou wasn’t particularly happy—her original goal was just to buy the house.
Now that the original owner was dead, the property would pass to his son, who lived in the UK. By the time the police contacted him and he returned to inherit the house, the system’s task deadline would probably be long past.
More importantly, Xu Youyou still had no clue about her “hidden deal” target.
She really wanted to just barge into that apartment in the Meilidu Building and claim her find.
But she couldn’t.
Soon, Lu Jingyao brought her new information.
“Zhang Sheng ran away. The police can’t contact him. We were the last ones to see him,” Lu Jingyao said.
Xu Youyou raised an eyebrow. “Could it be that Zhang Sheng killed his uncle?”
Lu Jingyao nodded slightly. “The police do suspect that.”
The police now summoned Xu Youyou’s group to take statements about the last time they saw Zhang Sheng.
Xu Youyou answered truthfully. While giving her statement, she suddenly thought of something and mentioned the Meilidu Building.
“I originally wanted to buy Zhang Boyuan’s apartment in the Meilidu Building. We knocked on the door for a long time and sensed someone was inside, but they wouldn’t open. Thinking back, it’s reasonable to suspect Zhang Sheng was inside, and there might be clues there,” Xu Youyou said.
Upon hearing this, the officers immediately flagged the Meilidu apartment.
That same afternoon, a team went in with a search warrant. While searching for clues, they unexpectedly found another body.
Hidden inside the freezer was a female corpse.
And she wasn’t a stranger—she was the granddaughter of Old Master Chen.
When Old Master Chen received the news, he immediately fainted from the shock.
Old Master Lu also sighed deeply, “How could this happen… Who would have thought… The Chen girl had just returned from her studies overseas, full of promise, and now… Poor Old Chen, sending off a younger generation with white hair…”
Xu Youyou hadn’t expected that one casual comment would directly complete her hidden deal task.
Liu Xiangyi, who had spoken very little since arriving in Hong Kong City, suddenly said, “Boss, did you realize early on that Zhang Sheng was a murderer? Is that why you kept pursuing him?”
Xu Youyou thought back to how she had chased Zhang Sheng from the Meilidu Building to Taikoo City, and then had her bodyguards follow him to Lamma Island. It really did look like she had been relentlessly pursuing him.
If she hadn’t insisted on buying that Meilidu apartment and tried so hard to contact Zhang Boyuan, Zhang Sheng could have continued pretending to be normal, managing the property for his uncle, and the murder would have gone unnoticed.
But Xu Youyou’s gaze fell on Liu Xiangyi. Compared to her previous hidden deal tasks, this time felt suspiciously easy.
If there was a difference this time, it was purely because she had brought Liu Xiangyi along!
