Chapter 155: The Second Team in Action
A fully armed team of police officers silently rushed into a residential complex, sprinting toward their target apartment building.
This was the City Bureau’s Criminal Investigation Second Team.
And their target was the high-rise apartment where the middle-aged man resided.
The bureau chief had made it clear—providing false testimony was equivalent to being an accomplice.
There could be dangers inside the apartment.
Thinking about what happened to the First Team at the hotel, the Second Team’s captain dared not take this mission lightly.
After all, the First Team consisted of the elite officers of the bureau, and the Major Crimes Unit was the cream of the crop.
Even they had suffered heavy casualties at the hands of this gang. The Second Team couldn’t afford to make the same mistakes.
The captain looked up at the target apartment’s floor and asked in a low voice through his earpiece, “Are the snipers in position?”
To capture the middle-aged man, the Second Team had even deployed snipers.
“Snipers in position!”
A response quickly came through the earpiece.
“Report on the target floor’s situation.”
“No movement detected.”
“The curtains are drawn—we don’t have a clear shot.”
The sniper team’s voice was steady.
“Any lookouts?”
“None!”
“Maintain surveillance.”
“Yes, sir!”
“Move in!”
At the captain’s command, the Second Team swiftly infiltrated the building, choosing to use the stairwell instead of the elevator—too easy to be tampered with.
Fortunately, the middle-aged man lived on the sixth floor.
For the well-trained officers, climbing six flights of stairs was effortless.
In no time, they reached their destination.
The entire team concealed themselves in the hallway, eyes locked on the closed apartment door.
“Assault team, get ready!”
“Yes, sir!”
Just then, the door unexpectedly creaked open.
A burly man, humming a tune, stepped out.
The captain froze.
“That’s not our target…?”
“Could our intel be wrong?”
He hesitated for a moment.
“Captain, that guy is with our target. I saw him at the station when the middle-aged man gave false testimony.”
A team member whispered, clearing up the confusion.
The captain’s eyes narrowed.
Not just one suspect—there were accomplices.
And inside that spacious apartment, who knew how many more were waiting?
Given its size, it could easily house a dozen armed criminals.
“Captain, should we act?”
A team member pointed toward the burly man heading for the elevator.
But as he moved, his elbow accidentally knocked against the stairwell wall, producing a faint thud.
Though soft, the sound echoed eerily in the quiet hallway.
“Who’s there?!”
The burly man froze, his eyes darting toward the stairwell as his hand instinctively reached for his waistband.
He was armed!
“We’re exposed!”
The captain’s heart sank.
The burly man spun on his heel and sprinted back toward the apartment, yanking a pistol from his waist.
He didn’t hesitate—he flicked off the safety and fired.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Gunshots exploded through the hallway.
His gun was already loaded.
Bullets slammed into the stairwell door, forcing the officers to duck for cover.
That moment of hesitation gave the burly man just enough time to retreat inside.
“Skinny, cops!”
He shouted at the top of his lungs.
Inside, a gangly young man with a flashy hairstyle emerged from the bathroom near the entrance, a pistol already in his grip.
He had heard the gunshots.
Seeing the burly man unharmed, he let out a relieved breath.
“What happened?”
“Cops in the stairwell! They’re here for us!”
The burly man pressed against the shoe cabinet, clutching his pistol with nervous eyes fixed on the door.
“Damn it! How’d we get exposed so fast?”
The young man gritted his teeth.
Meanwhile, outside in the stairwell, the captain cursed.
“Damn it, we’re exposed!”
He glared at the officer who had made the noise.
“Idiot! What were you thinking?”
“S-Sorry, Captain…”
The officer looked down, ashamed.
“You’re writing a report on this later!”
“Yes, sir…”
“Prepare for a forced entry!”
The captain’s voice was ice-cold.
“Yes, sir!”
The Second Team readied their weapons.
“Everyone, stay alert! The suspects are armed, and their numbers are unknown. Snipers, take the shot if you get one. Requesting backup from the bureau!”
“Copy that!”
A response came through the earpiece.
“You—start negotiations!”
The captain pointed at the officer who had made the mistake.
“Yes, sir!”
The officer carefully stepped out, pressing himself against the wall before shouting, “This is the City Bureau’s Criminal Investigation Second Team! You are surrounded! Lay down your weapons and surrender for leniency!”
His voice was loud, ensuring it carried into the apartment.
Inside, the young man and the burly man scowled.
“Damn cops!”
The burly man raised his gun, aiming for the door.
But before he could fire, the young man smacked his arm down.
“You idiot! That’s a solid wood door with a steel security gate outside! Your bullets won’t even reach them!”
“You’ll just get yourself shot by ricochets!”
The burly man hesitated before reluctantly lowering his weapon, though his face remained filled with anger.
“So what do we do now?”
“We escape.”
The young man’s eyes gleamed coldly.
“Escape?”
“How?”
“The cops are right outside, fully armed. It’s just the two of us, and we’re trapped inside. How the hell are we supposed to escape?”
The burly man rolled his eyes.
“Use your damn brain.”
The young man sneered.
“Go wake that guy up.”
He gestured toward the bedroom.
