Chapter 18: Hehe, Adorably Cute Spirit Beasts
Hong Chou’s face flushed bright red as she looked on. “How can His Majesty be so wanton, with no restraint at all?”
Nan Xun chuckled. “Don’t worry, Hong Chou. I got my revenge this time—his entire back is covered in scratches from my nails. He was probably bleeding. I didn’t suffer any less than he did.”
The others were shocked by her words.
That was the Demon King! This girl actually dared to make the Demon King bleed! Did she have any idea how precious the Demon King’s blood was?!
Nan Xun leaned against the edge of the bathtub, resting, and impatiently asked the Void Beast, “Little Eight, did the malice value go down?”
The Void Beast sounded a bit listless. “It did. The malice value is now 94.”
Nan Xun’s smile froze. “What? I worked my ass off serving him for so long and it only dropped by one damn point?”
The Void Beast explained, “It was the second time—of course it can’t compare to the first.”
Nan Xun let out a long sigh and accepted the bitter truth. “One point is still one point. Every little bit adds up.”
Because of the blow to her morale, Nan Xun was inevitably a bit slack over the next two days. That was until the Void Beast told her that the next time, the malice value had only dropped by 0.1. Nan Xun was so startled that she never dared to slack off again, cooperating especially well every time.
In just a few short days, Nan Xun and the Demon King’s bodies reached an unprecedented level of perfect compatibility.
Nan Xun didn’t know whether the Demon King was satisfied, because he spoke less and less each time, and his expression grew colder and colder.
Nan Xun didn’t have the luxury to care about that—as long as his malice value was dropping, it was fine.
These shameless days went on for more than a month. The Demon King’s malice value dropped from 94 to 85, then stopped changing.
Nan Xun grew anxious.
The Void Beast, however, was perfectly calm and even comforted her instead. “No rush. In the Xuanwu World, humans can extend their lifespan by cultivating Xuanwu. Although the Beast-Taming clans aren’t very talented in cultivating Xuanwu, they know many witchcrafts and secret arts—there are plenty of ways to extend lifespan. You still have a very long time~”
But Nan Xun didn’t feel comforted at all.
The news that the Demon King favored a human woman every day had already spread throughout the entire Demon Realm. Somehow, after the Demon King said something, those demon beasts who hated humans to the bone didn’t take it seriously.
Nan Xun asked the Void Beast why.
The Void Beast said, “Oh, that? Because the Demon King told all the demon beasts that you’re just a plaything. Once he gets bored of you, he’ll eat you and then declare war on the human race.”
Nan Xun shuddered. “What a heartless scumbag.”
Still, what kind of deep hatred was this? Why did the demon beasts insist on being enemies with the human race?
The Void Beast explained again, “Humans brought it upon themselves. A very, very long time ago, only demon beasts and divine beasts were fighting each other. The divine beasts were outnumbered, so they dragged the human race into it. Countless demon beasts died at human hands. Now their hatred toward humans exceeds even that toward the divine beasts.”
Nan Xun listened as Little Eight told her a lot of gossip about demon beasts, divine beasts, and humans, gaining a deeper understanding of this world.
For example, the Demon King’s species—the four-clawed Crimson Blood Teng Snake—was actually a mutated form of the divine beast Teng Snake. But this mutation was innately bloodthirsty and cruel, regarded as an aberration by the divine Teng Snakes and mercilessly expelled from the clan, eventually degenerating into an ancient ferocious beast.
Another example: the current leader of the Four Great Divine Beasts, the Azure Dragon, had been a mortal enemy of the divine Teng Snake long ago.
In order to compete for the position of leader among the divine beasts—and also to propagate its lineage—the Azure Dragon mated indiscriminately with all kinds of strange divine beasts, producing various dragon beasts: black dragons, yellow dragons, blue dragons, and so on. Among them, the purest and most noble bloodline was the five-clawed Golden Dragon, aristocrats among the dragon race.
Nowadays, the dragon beast clan had a sizable population, and their momentum had long since surpassed that of the aloof Teng Snakes.
“Scarcity makes things precious. The dragon beast clan really ought to implement birth control,” Nan Xun commented.
The Void Beast said, “The dragon beasts are already like that—sleeping around everywhere, utterly shameless.”
At night, Nan Xun was flipped and pressed like a pancake by the Demon King; during the day, she chatted idly with Little Eight. Her life couldn’t have been more decadent.
Then, suddenly, over the past two days, the Demon King stopped favoring Nan Xun, which greatly surprised her.
She asked Lu Sui and the others, but they hemmed and hawed.
In the end, it was Hong Chou who said indignantly, “Those old geezers in the Demon Realm heard that the Demon King could get close to women, so they selected many gorgeous demon beasts for him. Of course His Majesty doesn’t remember you now, madam! I even heard that last night, His Majesty bedded several women at once—the entire sleeping palace was filled with those bitches’ obscene cries. It made me furious!”
Nan Xun sighed after hearing this. “Little Eight, men really are creatures who think with their lower halves.”
The Void Beast replied, “The Demon King is a demon beast to begin with—and a snake at that. Haven’t you heard the saying that snakes are inherently lustful?”
Nan Xun was instantly left speechless.
But she wasn’t sad—on the contrary, she felt relieved. These past few days, doing that could no longer lower the Demon King’s malice value. This was the perfect chance for her to think of other methods.
How could she make a bloodthirsty, brutal demon beast king discover the true goodness, beauty, and kindness of the human world?
Nan Xun pondered this day after day, even eating much less.
In Hong Chou and the others’ eyes, this looked like loss of appetite and lovesickness.
Hong Chou felt it wasn’t worth it for her, and every day talked about which demon woman the King had favored again—none of them could compare to her.
Nan Xun thought Hong Chou’s way of thinking was really strange. Thankfully, she herself had no real feelings for the Demon King. If she were someone deeply in love with him, hearing such words would probably make her vomit blood on the spot.
To cheer her up, Lu Sui and the others somehow found two adorably cute spirit beasts.
These spirit beasts were called Zhizhi Beasts—completely fluffy, white all over, even cuter than the long-eared rabbit.
Nan Xun was terrible at naming things, so she called them Big White and Little White.
“Hong Chou, where are Big White and Little White? I just dug up this grass—they’ll definitely like it.” Nan Xun held a handful of lush, green grass.
Hong Chou said with an expression of frustration, “Madam, at a time like this, all you think about is playing with spirit beasts. His Majesty hasn’t come for ages!”
Lan Shui immediately pulled her aside and scolded her in a low voice, “That’s enough! Don’t bring these things up in front of Madam. Don’t you see how bad her complexion already is?”
Nan Xun waved it off indifferently. “It’s fine, it’s fine. Hong Chou is just worried I’ll fall out of favor. But there’s nothing I can do about this kind of thing. Might as well live as usual.”
Hong Chou stomped her foot in anger.
Suddenly, Big White and Little White were nowhere to be seen. The group split up to search for them.
Lu Sui seemed to spot something and suddenly let out a scream. The others immediately rushed over.
The once adorably cute Big White and Little White were now nothing but two skins lying under the shade of a tree—the flesh and blood inside had been completely drained.
The four maids exchanged looks, understanding without words.
Most likely, His Majesty had come by at some point, found these two spirit beasts displeasing to the eye, and eaten them on the spot.
Nan Xun looked at the two bloodstained skins. Her vision went black, and she fainted.
