Chapter 371: Chen Yang Runs Away from Home
Jiang Yu calmed his emotions, took a deep breath, and said:
“We plan to return this afternoon and should arrive in three days, Boss Su…”
Su Tao nodded, “I understand. Since you’ve found your sister, bring her back to Taoyang. I’ll arrange a two-bedroom apartment for you.”
Jiang Yu nodded firmly, quickly wiping his eyes with his sleeve, and then handed the communicator to his sister Jiang Tong.
“Tongtong, say hello to Boss Su.”
Jiang Tong took the communicator and softly said, “Hello, Boss Su.”
Hearing the young voice, Su Tao couldn’t help but feel her heart soften.
“Tongtong, right? Just call me ‘sister.’ Welcome to Taoyang.”
Jiang Tong was stunned.
Welcome her?
Would humans accept someone like her?
She couldn’t help but touch her left eye but remained silent.
Su Tao didn’t mind, assuming Jiang Tong was either shy or nervous.
Being lost for so long, a young girl like her must have gone through unimaginable hardships—probably leaving her with emotional scars. Su Tao decided to remind Jiang Yu to be extra patient and caring toward his sister.
After ending the call, Su Tao happily began preparing a new apartment for the Jiang siblings.
Meanwhile, Jiang Yu patted his sister’s head and suddenly remembered something. He pulled out a box from his backpack, took out a pair of thick glasses, and handed them to her.
“I’ve kept these safe for you—put them on. Otherwise, you won’t be able to see properly.”
Jiang Tong hesitated.
She no longer needed glasses.
But to avoid raising suspicion, she obediently put them on, despite the high prescription making her slightly dizzy.
Seeing her with the glasses on made Jiang Yu feel a stronger sense of reality—this really was his sister. Without the glasses, she seemed like a stranger.
Overjoyed, he lifted her into his arms.
“Let’s go, Tongtong! From now on, we’ll live a good life together—we’ll never be separated again!”
News of Jiang Yu finding his sister quickly spread across Taoyang. Everyone was happy for him. Even Chen Xi, a girl around Jiang Tong’s age, prepared a small gift, hoping to become friends with her. She was already planning weekend visits to Wen Yu’s villa to sing karaoke.
Zhuang Wan reminded her, “Jiang Tong may be older than you, but she’s been through a lot. Be patient with her, and don’t ask about her past, okay?”
Chen Xi nodded enthusiastically.
Meanwhile, her younger brother Chen Yang, who was at the age where trouble seemed to follow him, couldn’t resist teasing her:
“If you talk to her the way you talk to me, she’ll probably run off, and you’ll be left with no friends.”
Chen Xi punched him on the head. “I only talk to you like that because you’re annoying! Mom, please send him to the Pioneer Army already—he’s got too much free time!”
For Chen Xi, the most annoying creature in the world was her little brother.
Zhuang Wan was seriously considering it. She had recently heard that Chen Yang even confronted Su Tao about why she didn’t like Lei Xing.
When she learned of this, she almost fainted. Su Tao was her boss!
Her rebellious son questioning her superior was outrageous, no matter how patient Su Tao might be.
Outraged, she gave Chen Yang a sound scolding.
After much thought, Zhuang Wan decided to send him to the Dongyang Youth Pioneer Army training camp. If his father and uncle could survive military training, so could he. It was time he learned some discipline instead of enjoying the comfort and safety of Taoyang.
However, Chen Yang resisted. “Mom, I want to find Brother Lei. He said if Sister Tao agreed, he’d take me as his apprentice. I want to travel the world with him instead of being stuck in a place full of rules.”
Zhuang Wan refused and warned him sternly:
“You stay out of Su Tao’s business. If I catch you speaking on Lei Xing’s behalf again, I’ll kick you out of Taoyang—you can go and call Lei Xing your father if you want!”
That shut Chen Yang up for a while. But as a rebellious teen, he wasn’t going to back down easily. The next day, he went straight to Su Tao.
Amid piles of blueprints for the West Zone, Su Tao looked up quietly.
“Chen Yang, I can agree to let you go—but once you leave Taoyang, it won’t be easy to return.”
Without hesitation, Chen Yang nodded. “I’m ready. I’m a man—I need to go out and prove myself. Otherwise, I won’t deserve to come back.”
He refused to let his sister mock him forever.
Su Tao’s gaze sharpened.
“Think carefully before you answer. Have you considered the dangers you’ll face—the possibility of dying out there? Have you thought about how your mother will worry, losing sleep night after night? And are you aware that you don’t have the experience or skills to survive in the apocalypse?”
Clenching his fists, Chen Yang nodded resolutely. “I’ve thought it through.”
“Then go talk to your mom. If she agrees, you can pack your bags today and leave with Lei Xing.”
When Zhuang Wan heard his decision, she burst into tears and threw a cup at him.
“Fine! Leave if you want! Your sister is right—you’re spoiled and ungrateful. If you walk out of Taoyang, don’t bother coming back—I won’t care if you live or die!”
Chen Yang dodged the cup but didn’t argue back. His stubborn posture spoke volumes about his determination.
Zhong Gaoyi, watching nearby, shook his head in disapproval.
“You’re being reckless. The world outside isn’t a playground—it’s a battlefield. Lei Xing’s life may seem glamorous, but it’s built on blood and sacrifice. Your mom is trying to protect you.”
Chen Xi rolled her eyes and stormed off, muttering, “Idiot.”
That night, Chen Yang packed a backpack, tucked a handgun into his belt, and caught a ride north to find Lei Xing.
Zhuang Wan called out his childhood nickname, but he never looked back.
Crying quietly, she sank to the ground—heartbroken.
She had lost her husband and her brother, and now her only son was leaving her behind, chasing a dangerous dream.
Su Tao sighed, sharing Zhuang Wan’s pain.
“If you force him to stay, he’ll blame you for holding him back. Let him go—he’ll learn the hard way.”
Chen Xi, still furious, muttered, “Let him go, then. It’s his choice.”
Zhong Gaoyi stayed with Zhuang Wan at Taoyang’s gate, watching the direction Chen Yang had gone, until sunrise.
By morning, Zhuang Wan had cried herself dry.
When Zhong Gaoyi suggested she take a day off to recover, she shook her head bitterly.
“He’s not worth me missing work for.”
