Chapter 327: The Yu Family’s Past
Xiao Wenting snapped out of his thoughts and glared at Bai Jiayan. “My third sister?”
Bai Jiayan nodded. “Yes. She’s still as low-key as ever—she didn’t even have anyone with her and was dressed so plainly. If she hadn’t greeted me, I wouldn’t have known she was at the auction.”
Xiao Wenting’s heart sank. He immediately suspected that the vacant land in Taoyang had been bought by his third sister.
Seeing his face turn even darker, Bai Jiayan felt a bit nervous and asked softly, “Wenting? Did I say something wrong?”
Xiao Wenting tried to calm himself. Maybe Taoyang is just a scam. If my third sister bought it, she might have wasted her money.
No, he needed to go back and investigate thoroughly!
Xiao Yu placed two bags of supplies in the trunk of the car. When Su Tao invited him to stay for dinner, he politely declined.
“Please just take me home. My grandma is waiting for me to have dinner with her.”
Su Tao didn’t insist and told Xu Qi to drive toward Grandma Yu’s house.
The entire ride, Xiao Yu remained silent. Su Tao tried asking if something was wrong, but he just shook his head. His sadness was mixed with anger.
Since he didn’t want to talk, Su Tao stopped asking. When they arrived at his house, she reminded him gently:
“Xiao Yu, if anything happens, just call me.”
Hearing her genuine concern, Xiao Yu felt a warmth in his heart. He nodded, got out of the car, and entered the house.
As soon as he walked in, Grandma Yu, who had been waiting on the sofa, asked:
“Is everything settled?”
Xiao Yu nodded obediently. “Yes, everything was returned. Miss Su also accepted the water cup you gave her.”
Grandma Yu was satisfied and waved him over.
“Come eat, brat. And remember—no matter how small the benefit, we don’t take anything from anyone. We live our own lives. We don’t need anyone’s kindness.”
Xiao Yu hesitated for a moment, then said, “Grandma, I heard at the auction today… the ‘Energy Borrowing Bracelet’ was sold.”
The wrinkles on Grandma Yu’s face immediately tightened.
Xiao Yu’s voice trembled with hatred.
“But that guy from the Chu family hasn’t turned into a zombie yet. Did he figure out that prolonged use of the bracelet causes infection?”
Years ago, the Chu family had approached Grandma Yu with sincere gestures—visiting three times, offering valuable gifts, and even saving his father’s life.
Moved by their kindness, Grandma Yu agreed to work for them.
But it was all a lie. The so-called rescue was staged to win her trust. Every favor they offered came with a hidden price.
Soon after, the Chu family controlled both Xiao Yu and his father, forcing Grandma Yu to create a large number of Energy Borrowing devices.
The Chu family’s elite mercenary group rose to power by killing other ability users, stealing their crystal cores, and using those devices.
Grandma Yu endured the torment for years—her loved ones’ lives were in their hands. She had no choice but to comply.
But she found a way to retaliate—she activated the virus hidden inside the crystal cores. Anyone who used the Energy Borrowing items would slowly turn into a zombie.
Because the infection was slow, the Chu family didn’t notice and kept using the devices.
For three years, she endured—until the day his father died at the Chu family’s hands.
That day, Grandma Yu severed ties with them, cut off her own finger to break a blood-binding contract, and risked her life to escape with Xiao Yu.
Their escape was a nightmare. Even now, years later, the memory still made Xiao Yu tremble with fear and grief.
But their revenge was incomplete. The Chu family’s leader was still alive—and now the Energy Borrowing Bracelet had been sold.
“Grandma… do you think the Chu family found out? Will they come after us?”
After a long silence, Grandma Yu suddenly let out a cold, harsh laugh.
“Let them come! I’ll be waiting. If it comes to it, I’ll die fighting! I’ve had enough of this damned apocalypse!”
She grabbed Xiao Yu’s arm tightly.
“You need to leave—go anywhere, just don’t let the Chu family find you. Go now!”
Without giving him a chance to argue, she shoved precious items into his bag and pushed him out the door.
Xiao Yu’s tears ran dry as he pounded on the door, but it was no use.
The more desperately he knocked, the more fiercely Grandma Yu drove him away—even chasing him outside with a broom when he wouldn’t leave.
Back at her apartment, Su Tao quickly washed up, fed her pets, and began packing her luggage.
Tomorrow afternoon, they would leave Xindu and return to Taoyang.
Little Flame was getting healthier. Its fur had grown thicker, and its ears—tinged with fiery hues—made it look like a tiny flame spirit.
Qian Lin marveled, “This cat grows so well. No wonder Captain Song likes it so much.”
Su Tao smirked. “He likes the profits Little Flame brings him. Let’s be honest—if someone else could trade a cat for a huge payday, they’d probably just snatch it from me.”
Qian Lin nodded thoughtfully. “Yeah, I guess pestering you is still better than outright robbery.”
“By the way, boss, where’s your little crow? I haven’t seen it for a couple of days.”
Su Tao sighed. “I let it go.”
It had been nearly two days since the bird flew away—she doubted it would return.
Qian Lin looked a bit disappointed but didn’t press further. “It was a smart and charming little thing. What a shame.”
In the middle of the night, Su Tao was awakened by a tapping sound against the window.
At first, she thought it was just the wind blowing debris against the glass and tried to go back to sleep.
But Black Sesame, her cat, jumped onto the windowsill and pushed the window open.
A familiar crow flapped inside, chirping happily, “Good friend! Good friend!”
Annoyed by the noise, Black Sesame swatted its head to quiet it down.
Hearing the crow’s cheerful call, Su Tao sat up, surprised to see it back. “You… came back?”
The crow, thrilled and well-fed, landed on her shoulder. It extended a wing and pulled a shiny object from its feathers—a diamond ring.
Su Tao blinked in disbelief. “A… ring?”
It was probably scavenged from a zombie’s corpse.
She chuckled, returning it to the crow. “Keep it. It’s yours now.”
