Chapter 276: Watching Someone Die Without Helping?
Tang Le’s eyes turned red instantly—partly from shame, partly from excitement.
The others didn’t hesitate; they just grabbed whatever they could. In less than three seconds, the bag was completely emptied.
Wei Xiang couldn’t bring himself to snatch anything, but his eyes were glued to the supplies the others had taken.
Xu Qi was actually willing to give away so many supplies?
And from the way he remained calm just now, it seemed like he didn’t even consider this bag of supplies a big deal.
That woman, Su, was handing out supplies this generously?
Tang Le ignored Wei Xiang’s stare, twisted open a bottle of water, and gulped down half of it. Then, instead of hoarding it, he passed it to his companions.
Seeing this, the others also took out what they had received and shared it among themselves.
Except for Wei Xiang.
Wei Xiang’s face alternated between green and white.
One of the men couldn’t hold back and said,
“Brother Wei, when you brought us out here, you talked a lot of crap about Brother Xu Qi. Fine, whatever. But you also promised us that as long as we followed you, we’d never go hungry or thirsty, we’d live in big houses, and we’d have our pick of women.”
“And now, here we are, relying on Brother Xu Qi’s generosity to get a bag of life-saving supplies. Since you don’t think much of Brother Xu Qi, you shouldn’t need anything from him either. No need to let it offend your eyes.”
Tang Le and the others remained silent.
Right now, they deeply regretted falling for Wei Xiang’s empty promises.
Just from this bag of supplies alone, it was clear that the female boss, Su, treated Xu Qi and his people well.
They must have been out of their minds to believe Wei Xiang’s nonsense—that Su was ruthless and would never take care of Tan Yong’s former men.
The more Tang Le thought about it, the angrier he got. He turned to the others and asked,
“Who’s coming with me to join Brother Xu Qi?”
Everyone except Wei Xiang stepped forward.
Most of them had a decent relationship with Xu Qi and hadn’t personally offended him.
They also had no major grudges with Mist—when they abandoned him back then, they were just going along with the group; they hadn’t actively opposed his rescue like Wei Xiang had.
As for Nie Sibai… well, they had bullied him a little, but nothing too extreme.
So joining Xu Qi didn’t seem like an impossible option.
Wei Xiang sneered, “Xu Qi? He’s nobody. He’s not even in charge.”
Tang Le clenched his fists. “Then we’ll go to Boss Su.”
Wei Xiang laughed even harder.
“You really think Su Tao will take you in? Women hold grudges. You didn’t choose to stay back then, and now you want to come crawling back? Get ready to be humiliated.”
He had a point.
Tang Le felt a deep sense of regret—like he had backed himself into a dead-end in life by listening to Wei Xiang’s lies.
There was indeed a risk that Su Tao would humiliate them.
But it was still better than waiting to die!
The supplies wouldn’t last long. Even if they rationed, they’d survive at most two days.
Their ultimate fate would be either starving to death, dying of thirst, or getting torn apart by zombies in the night.
Tang Le firmed his resolve and ignored Wei Xiang.
“Pack your things, brothers. We’re heading toward Xindu. There will be plenty of people attending the conference—we’ll definitely run into a convoy that can give us a ride! Once we find Brother Xu Qi, we’ll ask him to put in a good word for us with Boss Su. If we’re lucky, we might even get our own supply bags like him!”
Everyone’s spirits lifted instantly.
Even the three members of the Deng family, who were lying on the ground, were forgotten as the group hurriedly gathered their belongings.
Wei Xiang watched coldly, his face dark and unreadable.
Fang Yan, realizing that her husband’s life was slipping away fast, finally swallowed her pride and grabbed Tang Le’s arm, her voice trembling with desperation.
“Xiao Tang, take us with you! Old Deng… he, he—”
In just this short time, Deng Chengye’s body had begun to stiffen, his temperature dropping rapidly.
Deng Zixuan seemed to sense it too, her whole body trembling, unable to speak.
Tang Le’s heart skipped a beat. He pried open Deng Chengye’s eyelids and checked for breath—
Dead.
He quickly withdrew his hand and stood up, wanting no part in this family’s business.
He had some understanding of Fang Yan’s personality—this woman was petty, mean, and arrogant.
If she decided to blame someone for her husband’s death, she wouldn’t stop until she got revenge.
And she had a daughter who was set to marry President Zhuo in Xindu.
Tang Le was just a nobody—he couldn’t afford to make an enemy out of the city’s top leader.
So he ran.
The others weren’t fools either. Sensing the situation turning bad, they grabbed whatever they could and ran as well.
In the blink of an eye, only Wei Xiang remained, along with the two stunned Deng women and Deng Chengye’s lifeless body.
Deng Zixuan, gathering her courage, reached out to check her father’s breath.
Her face turned pale, her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the ground—so terrified that she couldn’t even cry.
Fang Yan crawled over to check as well. She froze for a second before wailing in despair.
Wei Xiang felt like his head was about to explode. Just as he was about to leave, Deng Zixuan suddenly grabbed him.
“You can’t go! My father hired you to escort us. You have to take us safely to Xindu!”
Wei Xiang’s eyes flickered. “You really have a sister who’s about to marry Zhuo Ercheng?”
The Alliance Summit President wasn’t anything special—the real rarity was Zhuo Ercheng himself.
He was a powerful ability user, second only to one person in Xindu, with a great deal of real authority and significant influence.
But more importantly, Zhuo Ercheng’s grandfather held a high-ranking position in Changjing, serving as a district governor.
And that was Changjing—the strongest, most populous, and most talent-rich city. Even a random district governor from Changjing had more power than the top leaders of an Elite Tier-1 Base elsewhere.
If this was a chance to get into Changjing…
Wei Xiang’s gaze locked onto Deng Zixuan.
Deng Zixuan bit her lip and nodded.
“It’s true. My sister’s name is Deng Ziqing. A few years ago, President Zhuo came to Luonan, took a liking to her, and brought her to Xindu to enjoy the good life. Before we came to Xindu, she called us and said they were planning to get engaged this year.”
But Deng Zixuan wasn’t telling the full truth.
Her sister had only mentioned that she wanted to settle down this year—she hadn’t even brought it up to Zhuo Ercheng yet.
There were too many women around him, and her sister couldn’t tolerate it anymore. The real reason their family was coming to Xindu was to force the engagement.
Wei Xiang didn’t know any of this. A spark of hope ignited in his heart.
Right now, he was alone and powerless—he desperately wanted to make a name for himself, to prove to Tang Le and the others that they had made the right choice by following him.
And to show that damn woman, Su Tao, that it was her loss for not keeping him around.
Wei Xiang made up his mind—he would take the Deng mother and daughter along, even if they were dead weight.
As for Deng Chengye’s body, they could only bury it somewhere quickly.
Fang Yan cried her heart out, as if the sky had collapsed.
In the apocalypse, a man was everything to a woman—her protector, her rib, the pillar that upheld her life.
Now that her husband was gone, who could she rely on in this wasteland?
Deng Zixuan, eyes red, held onto her.
“Mom! We still have my sister… and my brother-in-law. Once they get married, there’s no way he won’t take care of us.”
Fang Yan latched onto this hope like a drowning person grasping at straws.
“Yes… Your sister, your brother-in-law is a powerful man. Yes, yes… Your father can’t just die like this for nothing! We have to make your brother-in-law find those raiders. And—those people who just stood by and watched him die—They all have to pay with their lives!”
