Chapter 260: Our Boss Gu Gives Gifts Without Expecting Anything in Return
Hui Shu noticed that his boss, after hanging up the call, had an incredibly foul expression. He didn’t dare make a sound and even tried to take small steps to sneak away from the scene.
However, before he could move a few steps, he heard his boss’s ominous voice ask:
“The RV I told you to find—where is it?”
Hui Shu immediately stopped in place and reported, “It’s been found! I was just about to update you. It’s an A-class motorhome from before the apocalypse, 13 meters long. I had it parked in our garage for now. Would you like to take a look?”
Gu Mingchi’s expression eased slightly. “Let’s go see it.”
The RV was about 60-70% new. From the outside, it resembled a regular pre-apocalypse bus, though it was slightly taller. The body was silver-white with some minor scratches, but they weren’t too noticeable unless you looked closely.
Gu Mingchi found the scratches unsightly.
He was giving this as a gift—how could there be such obvious flaws?
“Find someone to fix up the exterior,” he ordered.
Hui Shu mentally thought his boss was being overly picky, but he still nodded repeatedly in agreement.
Gu Mingchi pulled open the door and stepped inside. To the right was the driver’s seat, and to the left was a small living area, complete with a sofa, coffee table, and TV cabinet.
However, the furniture looked a bit old, covered in dust, and the TV was broken—it wouldn’t even turn on.
Afraid that his boss would be dissatisfied, Hui Shu quickly explained, “This RV was actually barely used. I heard it was bought by a young couple who planned to go on a road trip, but less than a month after buying it, the apocalypse hit, and they both lost their lives. The vehicle was abandoned at a service station ever since.”
“For twenty years, almost no one could afford to drive it—it consumes way too much fuel and electricity. It’s incredibly extravagant. It changed hands twice through trades but ultimately remained idle. It really hasn’t been used much. It just looks old because of poor maintenance. I’ll get a few guys to clean and refurbish it inside and out—it’ll look as good as new.”
Gu Mingchi gave a satisfied “Hmm” and continued further inside. The next area was a small kitchen, barely big enough for two people to stand in, but it was fully equipped with a stove, storage cabinets, and even a range hood.
He tried turning it on—and it actually worked.
Hui Shu bent down slightly and said, “Just charged it up.”
Gu Mingchi nodded and moved further in, finding the bedroom. It had a double bed, and the entire wall in front of it was lined with storage cabinets.
The bed was bare, covered in dust, and cobwebs hung in the corners.
Attached to the bedroom was a bathroom. It was relatively spacious and, aside from the dust, still in decent condition.
Overall, Gu Mingchi was quite pleased—he figured his gift wasn’t any worse than what Shi Zijin had given.
While he was making these comparisons, Su Tao wasn’t thinking about comparing at all.
In fact, when she saw this “bus” parked in front of her gate, her first thought was that a gang had shown up to cause trouble.
Then, out stepped a sweaty Hui Shu—alone.
Shi Zijin, with one hand wrapped in bandages, stood beside Su Tao, gazing at Hui Shu with an unreadable expression.
Hui Shu felt immense pressure, nearly wanting to turn around and drive the RV back.
Still, he braced himself and tried to sound confident:
“Boss Su, our Boss Gu heard you’re heading to Xindu, and since it’d be inconvenient to travel with a bunch of men, he found this RV for you. It has a guest bed, a kitchen—everything you need. We even replaced all the windows with bulletproof glass.”
Shi Zijin’s gaze darkened further.
Hui Shu could sense the danger but refused to back down.
He was representing Boss Gu.
If he backed down, that meant Boss Gu backed down.
No way could they lose face in front of a rival.
Su Tao, confused, looked at the vehicle up and down and asked,
“Gu Mingchi wants to sell it to me? How much? No—what does he want in return?”
It looked like a nice vehicle, and she was considering buying one.
But it never crossed her mind that this was a gift.
Knowing how Gu Mingchi loved taking advantage of her, he was probably scheming to get something out of her again.
She mentally ran through all the valuable items she had, thinking about what she could trade.
Suddenly, Hui Shu loudly declared, “Our Boss Gu said it’s a gift!!”
His voice was so loud that not only did Shi Zijin hear it clearly, but the surrounding Taoyang residents also turned their heads.
Chenxi and Chenyang, holding a communicator, were live-streaming the scene to Dr. Zhong Gaoyi, who was on duty at the clinic.
Zhong Gaoyi almost ran out to witness the drama in person.
Su Tao immediately went on high alert, taking a step back. She asked warily, “What does he want?”
No one gives without expecting something in return.
Was this a setup? Would he expect something even bigger from her later?
Hui Shu quickly glanced at Shi Zijin, then just as quickly looked away and repeated Gu Mingchi’s exact words:
“Nothing. Our Boss Gu said he’s not the only one who can give gifts. If Boss Su wants anything, just ask him. He gives without expecting anything in return.”
And with that—he ran.
Chenxi gasped out loud.
She was old enough to recognize the scent of warfare.
On the other end of the live stream, Zhong Gaoyi nearly spat out his drink.
Su Tao was stunned. She looked at the RV, then at Shi Zijin’s face. She opened her mouth but didn’t know what to say.
Shi Zijin suddenly let out a soft chuckle.
A declaration of war?
He had expected his first challenger to be Lei Xing, not Gu Mingchi.
Shi Zijin patted Su Tao’s head and nodded toward the RV. “Take it. A free gift is a free gift.”
Su Tao wrinkled her nose, tapped her toes against the ground, and fidgeted with her fingers. She couldn’t help but ask,
“What does Gu Mingchi mean by this?”
Shi Zijin answered with a straight face, deliberately distorting Gu Mingchi’s intentions:
“Maybe he needs a favor from you later and is just giving a gift upfront to make it easier to ask. Don’t overthink it.”
Su Tao narrowed her eyes at him.
Shi Zijin countered with a question:
“What else could it mean? That guy never does anything without a reason. Come on, let’s check out the inside.”
Su Tao still had doubts, but when she saw that Shi Zijin had already climbed into the RV, she decided to push the matter to the back of her mind.
Whatever. If Gu Mingchi wanted something, he’d eventually ask. If she could help, she would.
Once inside, Su Tao’s attention was completely drawn to the interior.
This was practically a mobile luxury apartment!
Shi Zijin only needed to touch the driver’s seat twice to figure out how to drive it. He checked all the appliances and confirmed, “This is a great vehicle. You can stay in it while traveling. Once you get out, just have Fang Zhi store it in the space.”
He also ran his fingers along some hidden corners—spotless. Clearly, it had been meticulously cleaned before being sent over.
Gu Mingchi had really put effort into this one.
Shi Zijin narrowed his eyes slightly.
Su Tao loved it. She touched everything, admiring every detail. Finally, she had someone drive it into Taoyang and park it by the main road for now.
She asked Aunt Kang to bring in two housekeeping staff to set up the bed with fresh linens.
A brand-new sofa cover was placed on the living room couch. A new TV was mounted on the wall.
The small kitchen was stocked with pots, bowls, and utensils.
And the double-door refrigerator—packed with her favorite snacks, drinks, ice cream, and pre-cooked meals that just needed to be thawed and heated.
